I've just downloaded Valve Hammer Editor for the first time, but there isn't a 'Usable Objects' file in the 'categories' list, only 'Primitives'. Someone please tell me how to get them!

Only when you're in point-based entity placement mode, you can access the point-based entities. To go into this mode, click the button with the white light-bulb in the left panel.

To create brush-based entities, select one or more brushes and click the 'To Entity' button in one of the boxes to your right, or press Ctrl + T. Then you can choose an entity from a list. That should be all you need for now. Good luck!

Captain P: he's looking for the standard prefabs :)

97: I guess you downloaded Hammer 3.5 without reading what it said. Get 3.4, install it, then get 3.5 and overwrite hammer.exe with the new one.

Thanks for that last post, but even when I'm in point-based entity mode there still isn't a 'Usable Objects' file in the 'categories' list.

I DO have Hammer 3.4, but there still isn't a 'Usable Objects' file in the 'categories' list, even when I'm in point-based entity mode.

Make sure you have the appropriate fgd file loaded into Hammer. If you don't, no single entity can be created.

How do I get the appropriate fgd file?

Ah, when you mean prefabs, they should be just in that list when you're in brush creating mode, the white box button... :)

My fault, I first understood you wanted point-based entities. But you wanted prefabes instead...

No, my fault! I've only just started using it yesterday and don't know all the terms. Sorry!

The 'Usable Objects' part in the white box isn't there for some reason, and so I can't get to the prefabs. What do I need to do, install or hit to get it back?

Check in your hammerprefabs directory. Are there some files there with the extension .OL?

First, click the Block tool button (or use Shft + B), then select Usable Objects from the list.

Anyways, you don't need it as it's not absolutely necessary for mapping. In fact, I never use prefabs.

Nope, nothing at all.

How do I get the files?

Ah, well, don't know. I guess they're standard with Hammer. Anyway, don't worry when you don't have them. You don't need them.

I'm new at Hammer and would prefer to use standard half-life prefabs/objects to start off with. Would it be possible for someone to e-mail the files or a link where I can download them?

Get them here.

It works! IT WORKS! Thanks for helping me there. Sorry if I've been very annoying and stupid, but I really appreciate the help from all of you! See you tomorrow!
