when im in valve hammer i made this archway to go into some tunnels and i got it lookin cleanand cut nice, then i go into game and i see this big triangle piece stickin out of the wall which i deleted in valve when i took an arch solid and to other brushes to carve the arch way outa the wall. whuts up with it is there somethin i should do to make it so that stupid piece dont stick out in game?

This happens because of invalid solid structures. It may look alright in the editor, but messed up in the game. Its probably happening because you carved, only carve with blocks. Press alt+p to check for problems. If that dosen't help submit a problem map.

Don't ever carve. Ever. Ever. Ever. Snarkpit had a tut on how to make arches properly w/o carving, check it out.

OMG I hate it when people say you can't carve because it is just fine! The only thing you are supposed to carve is with boxes. If you built up a shape that you would normally carve with 2 boxes it would be just the same as if you carved it!

CARVING IS NOT FINE! LOOK WHAT HAPPENED HERE! STOP SAYING ITS OK!

there is very little wrong with carving. it's like noobs saying you shouldn't clip, just because you can't get a certain shape, or they manage to noob it up and get an error.
there is nothing in hammer to hinder the mapper, it's all tools that are at your disposal for certain purposes, each having a distinct advantage over another with regards to different situations.

carve is an awesome tool, allowing you to create a series of sunken/hollowed/etc objects at a much faster pace than if you made multiple brushes. it is possible to make arches using carve, make a cylinder, lay it into a vertical brush, and carve, there you go. an arch (just clean up any misalignments with vertex manip, if there are any at all...)
personally i make arches by creating the surrounding walls, creating a brush to fit between, clipping (with the clip tool set to leave both sides intact) it down to size, and then vertexing the required brushes into shape.

it's all rather simple.
btw, don't tell anyone that any tool in hammer is never to be used, it's seriously lame...
Check out the new Hallway tut!!

I meant carving with complex shapes in my above post. I carve with boxes, but the problem with carving cylinders and arches and spikes and other shapes, is that it shatters the brush you are carving into, which gives you those misalignments, unnecessary faces/solids and invalid solids. It can save lots of time in situations where you need to make a small box in the wall, but can give you weird compile errors and invalid solids that may take longer to fix than to just do everything manually.
make a cylinder, lay it into a vertical brush, and carve, there you go. an arch (just clean up any misalignments with vertex manip, if there are any at all...)
Umm, why not just VM in the first place and not have to worry about misalignments later, as they are annoying to fix? Because carving with cylinders will always cause a misalignment unless you have manually created the cylinder, and then it will probably happen too.
