Get wally(slackiller's site in the links page) and open the pak file(in the valve folder called pak0.pak) in it enter the map folder and extract all the maps! ;) They are called C0A0,C0A1,C1A2...ect

better make your own mod. ;) Hl1 remake!! :glad:

If you make a mod then you can play your levels anytime you want and also you wont delete the old ones.

I highly advice you to go to the compotitions before starting mods. They build motivation to finish stuff and you'll need it to finish a whole mod. ;)

My first finished map is my compo entery. :glad:

I think it's a bad idea to enter a contest if you're new at mapping. You're obviously not going to win, so it's best to develop your skills before entering a contest. Heck, I've been mapping for like two-three weeks and I haven't entered a contest yet.

What Elon is saying I think is that he will get good experience trying new things if he enters a compo. It is very beneficial to the creative process to be given an idea to work off of. You could make a compo map, and submit it, if you dont win, who cares.. Its all about the experience.

It's fun indeed, and that's what it's about. Win or no win. ;)

I've never entered a compotion...

Nor have I really completed anything...

I mean, Hazardous took over "TWHLmix" as I was away, so I techniquly didn't finish that...

I agree.

Though if you're new, follow these steps to help you along:

1. Read and follow all the In The Beginning tutorials.

2. After you feel somewhat comfortable with hammer, STOP. Don't start making your map without a clear plan of what you want to do--I use ms paint to draw out all the rooms. I've heard others prefer using notebook or graphing paper.

Just please believe me... The planning stage is the most important imo, and the step many people forego.

Yeah. I've already done that with the remake of Mappy, but I believe it's also a good idea to, instead of drawing the basic layout of the map, draw concept art of the inside of the rooms so you know what's going to be in there BEFORE you map it. It'll save you a lot of time.

Agreed.

Sometimes I'll make multiple .bmps--ms paint-- for one room, depending how complicated it is, as well as different concept variations. Also will dl and save relevant ref pics.

It took me a while to take my own advice, so hopefully, we'll see the fruits in my newer maps--I have loads in the pure planning stage... :)

Here is one of the dozen or so concept pics I made in ms paint for Compo 16.

For this compo I had two different Ideas, and different variations of each Idea. It was actually a lot of fun planning it, but unfortunately, I never had time to flesh it out. :(

Well thank-you :)

It doesnt take long, and MS Paint is perfect for the job imo.
