The usual press release...
We haven?t had any updates for a while ? But we?ve still been hard at work as of late. Recent restructuring within the team has resulted in some new additions to the team?s collective of talented members, and as such, I?d like to use part of this announcement to welcome the new team members aboard. Joining us are Laz, Limper and Raminator, who are adding their talents in the departments of textures and skins, modeling, and level design respectively. Already they are hard at work on new areas of development within Black Mesa: Source. If you see them around on the forums or IRC, make sure to give them a welcome!

Additionally we would like to officially announce our new forum shift. We have recently shifted to our own, IPB-based board system, complemented by our own forum skin courtesy of Kester, Orcone and DKR1138 of the development team and forum fame. A new website is also under development to meet the expanding requirements for our modification page, as well as to accent the forum skin. The existing site has been updated to include some new, custom music from our soundtrack and some new sounds, both by our talented sound artist Joel, so make sure to stop by and see some updates to what ModDB named the ?third best website? in the entire modification community last year. On another website-related note, you'll notice that some of our media images have been taken down. This is because they no longer reflect the quality of our final version. Also, the HTML website has been taken down temporarily due to some maintenance issues. It should be making a return shortly!

Following the loss of some of our developers, we are looking for some new talent to fill in spots on the development team ? At the moment, we are currently hiring individuals talented in the departments of level design and skinning/texture art. For more information on these positions, please have a look at the jobs section of the Black Mesa: Source website.

We conclude this release with a screenshot! This week?s media includes another Surface Tension shot, but this time, rendered with High Dynamic Range as is used in Lost Coast. Various levels from the modification are undergoing compiles with both High Dynamic and Low Dynamic range in order to determine what looks and plays the best. In the end, the player will have the option to play through Black Mesa: Source with or without HDR rendering.

Finally, if you think Black Mesa: Source is the mod you think should be ?Mod of the Year?, vote for it! You can visit our Mod Database entry by clicking here to cast your vote. You?ll need to be registered and logged into ModDB for your vote to count more, and sometimes at all, so please support them and create an account if you don?t have one already! Also, account or no account, please support Black Mesa: Source in the ModDB topsite listing by clicking here. Your vote counts once per day.

Stay tuned, for a second media release is on its way for the end of December.

Looks quite good but I personally think HDR has made it look not as good as the first pic I saw, that godsmacked me but this doesn't as much...

I think it looks excellent... just the building's lighting looks poor from that angle. Cover that up, and the HDR looks much nicer in my opinion.

Looks really good, though it misses something wich i cant pin point my finger down on. Though it shows a stricking resemblance with a real dam, especialy the hoover dam. Darn good mapping there!

The dam wasn't THAT big was it? A very nice-looking map indeed.

WOOOOOOOOOOT for Rabid and his sweet mapping!

HDR is a little overblown though
Posted 18 years ago2005-12-13 18:00:09 UTC Post #152168
Does somebody have a Wet Wipe? :P

The shadow on the dam looks amazing, though the buildings below look weird to me somehow.

I am a source noob completely, so feel free to smite where necessary...

Nice screenshot. :)
The building below seems a bit repetetive, both in shape and color, but the lighting on the dam is sweet. I like the electricity cables going up as well.

Yeah, well. Dams are like that, not much to do about that eh?

ya, make sure you keep it realistic. but some extra bits of detail wouldn't be bad if they didn't do much for framerates

@Rabideh: You're just too sexy for the women to resist. ;)

@Dark Angel: Wow! You're the first female mapper I ever met. Do me a favour and keep doing it a long time!
More female game-developers! Raise you hands, if you agree!

The first is Black Mesa: Source (Flash site; their HTML version is currently down). This was announced ages ago and seems perhaps the most ambitious mod of all time. The complete translation of the original Half-Life into Source. The amount of work involved just seems staggering.

Valve released Half-Life: Source, which was sort of a port, I guess, of the original game into Source, with new ragdoll physics and water effects. But the people behind Black Mesa: Source are completely rebuilding and recreating the entire game in Source, and their latest announcement is that they?ll be including HDR compatability. Golly.

Some of the screenshots are just amazing, and I can?t wait to play. I could easily see this as a retail/Steam release, and I would happily pay full-price, if it?s as good as it appears to be shaping up to be.

But who's counting, right? ;)

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but for the life of me, I could barely get my wife to walk around in my map. It's rare for women to be interested in mapping, for some reason.

Nice looking stuff, for the most part. I don't really like the desert areas, however, because they look way too smooth. I think the old HL style brush-based rocks looked way more realistic in the situations they were used. Displacements look better for rolling HL2 style hills, and some rounded rocks, but not jagged rock faces.

Old school FTW.

Wow Rabid, I just want to say that Rainbow 6 Vegas made the same Hoover Dam in a map, and yours looks so much better. Not just the Dam but the displacements, shadows, lighting, etc.

Better than the Pros :)

I don't think I've ever looked forward to any 3rd party mod as much as I'm looking forward to BM:S.

I pmed him about being on the BM:S team a while ago, he told me the same thing. It was several months ago, though so...

Better than the Pros
Sometimes the only thing that separates us from the Pros is that they get paid and we don't :D
