@Penguinboy

Yeah, but the problem is that you can't record some games. Or maybe I don't understand something.

Jessie: If you're recording games, use shadowplay. I've never noticed any poor performance in games and I have shadowplay running all the time.

This reminds me I'll need to ask a very similar question sometime soon. My computer is five years old already and it's showing.

I won't lie, but I feel disgusted when I see people complaining how their Intel HD Graphics isn't good enough for games. They should've tried what I have, and then they would appreciate their stuff more.

But yeah, I did a very good job of not killing my current laptop. I mean, it's almost 10 years old and only God knows when will its HDD fail.
Anyway, I'm really excited for that new PC.

Oddly, last night I had a dream where my neighbour-cousin (he's a 3rd-grader) was playing games on his own PC. Man... what an odd dream. It's odd because he doesn't have a PC of any sort - not even a laptop. And his parents probably won't buy him one, either. xd

The night (or 2 nights) before, I had had a dream where I was in a bicycle race in Stolac and it was very rainy. I came 9th and I got a yellow RX 460. What the heck...

Now, another thing:
I also dreamed about giant snakes in GoldSRC. I even found them attractive. Weird

Until last October I was in the same situation - Intel GMA 950 GPU, Pentium Dual CPU, 2GB RAM memory. It was hard to work with anything more demanding, but worked quite well for what I needed.

Now I have a laptop with Nvidia Geforce 920M, which is considered to be entry-level GPU for 2015, and only 4GB RAM, yet still managed to play Witcher 3 on low-med without much stutter and Dark Souls 3 on high settings with slight stuttering. Quad core i5 CPU is quite good. I feel that this laptop is much more than I actually need, but it's good to have a bit more power.

Alright, let's do this...
I said something about this new topic in the screenshots thread.

My GPU standards:

Bottom-end: graphics cards like Intel GMA X3100, the G41 Chipset etc.
Low-end: GT 210, GT 610, old AMD HD 2000 Series and stuff like the AMD X1300 etc.

Medium-end: Intel HD Graphics 3000, Nvidia GT 720 and 730, AMD R7 240, lower-end AMD HD 4000 (incl. the 4650 - my old PC's GPU), 5000 and 6000 (e.g. 6450) series
Higher-medium-end: AMD R7 250, R7 250X, Nvidia GT 740, Intel HD Graphics 4000

Budget-high-end: AMD RX 460 (& 560), GTX 750 Ti and 650 Ti and so on...
High-end: AMD RX 470 (& 570), GTX 760 (& 770, 960 and 970), AMD HD 7000 series (e.g. the 7970)

The top-end: AMD RX 480 (& 580), GTX 780 (& 980 Ti), and I don't know what else to fit here...
The realm-of-gods-end: AMD RX Vega, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti and the Titan GPUs.

Yeah, I have some standards which a lot of people won't agree with (mostly from the low-end to high-end GPUs), but that's just how I see graphics cards.

And I remember that Cd5ssmffan told me that I didn't really answer the question (on my GameBanana blog), so here it is:

Why do I like "low-end" graphics cards?
It's because your low-end is my higher-medium-end. Now think about that. You've seen the chart, now you know it.

Alright, an SSD sounds pretty good. Here's a tangential question: What part should you upgrade to make a computer run better while recording? Is that a disk, CPU, GPU or RAM thing?

2 - Scoot, verb, "to slide especially while seated"

3 - ?

Urby, you're reading it wrongly. If you wanted to understand this journal, you should've followed it every day and monitor every new comment, and (if possible) connect each new comment to its context.

Of course, I understand. Everybody has their own priorities. This journal, however, is my priority, so I'll obviously monitor it all the time.

Well, my breakfast is long gone and my coffee is cold. I've never read so much and learned so little.

Anything that's inappropriate is pretty much deleted from my watch history. But my search history on YouTube, not sure if it's a thing, is something you would laugh at, since it's not deleted.

So, I went to Facebook yesterday, and I decided to visit my classmates' chat group.
There were 1319 unread messages, and my classmates got some nice nicknames. XD

Then I came in and said something funny. It was followed by 3 "Hahhahahaha"s and someone asked me "What's up?".

I said "1319 messages, that's what's up." and "What's up with you?"
Then this happened:

Look at who changed my nickname. This is just so funny. Then they posted some photos of Chetniks in the Republic of Srpska. Yeah, I'll definitely stay out of chatting for now. Well, except 3 persons.

Hmm, let me see those "jokes" again...
Oh, I get it.

I said that I wouldn't answer them, with "them" being "What's brown and sticky?" and "What's orange and sounds like a parrot?".

Since they're a part of the "joke", then I shouldn't be expected to answer these questions at all. The funny part is supposed to be, hmm, the answers which are struck through? ("A stick." and "A carrot.")

I understand them, but what's so funny about them? :P

There, I think I wrote enough to satisfy your first question. :)
You were interested in my reaction to the joke. But you forgot that my reactions come in pairs, so there you go.

Before going the SSD route, check with Windows's task manager if disk usage is really the culprit. If yes, then I agree with other TWHLers that getting a SSD is a priority before upgrading the rest.

Looking at your current configuration, your PC seems to suffer the same problem as mine : "disk bottleneck".

SSDs are one of those things you have around that you don't really care about until you don't have it, like toilet paper.
Commented 7 years ago2017-05-31 13:49:47 UTC in journal: Updates Comment #52982
I remember when I got my first SSD... even when I had it plugged into a SATA2 port and thus bottlenecking the drive it still blew me away with how everything fast was.

Now I have a terabyte m.2 drive and all my games are on there too (just for that extra 1-2 secs of loading time :D). You can never go back after getting one. And the write cycle is really a non issue imho, my first drive is still alive and kicking after 5 years of use.

Trust us you need that before anything else :)
Commented 7 years ago2017-05-31 12:51:45 UTC in journal: Updates Comment #52987
Pretty much correct, for casual everyday, use. I bought a SSD mostly because of the people nagging on me to get one whenever we talked about tech. Supposedly after having one, i could never go back to HDDs. Well, here i am, typing on 10 a y/o laptop that i usually carry with me when not on my home desktop, still not having a problem with HDD builds and still thinking that it wasn't a great investment.
Sure, the start-up/loading times are not even remotely close and the data transfer is somewhat noticeable on my commonly used software, which according to windows history is mostly 3d software stuff.

Imho, for everyday use i'd say it all depends on what you already have and how your current hardware is holding up. If you're the type that has to deal with loading times/data transfer often and you're counting the seconds, then sure, go for it. If you're trying to squeeze a bit more fps in games and 3d apps, upgrade somewhere else.

I jumped onto the SSD train a few years ago and now any computer that doesn't have one seems 20 years old.

They're fan-fucking-tastic.

I basically have windows and some miscellaneous programs installed on the SSD, whereas I have my steam library on my storage drive.

I also mapped MyDocuments, MyMusic etc etc to my storage drive as well.

Just don't defrag a SSD

Hmmmmm... Would I be correct in asserting that that would have little performance impact in the actual operation of programs, as opposed to booting, opening, saving, etc.? I'm not sure that's where my priorities lie.

(I mean, ideally, I'd like to replace and improve just about everything, but my funds are... quite limited these days.)
Commented 7 years ago2017-05-31 11:49:47 UTC in journal: Updates Comment #52983
Blindingly fast read and write, essentially. I have my desktop's OS installed on one, and now the slowest part of booting that machine is the BIOS splash screen. And I run Windows.

Incidentally, I had held off getting an SSD for a while because of the limited read/write cycles, but it appears that the problem is (mostly) solved now and that modern SSDs just slow down to HDD speed rather than dying after, and even then the limit is up to the equivalent of petabytes of info. I still use a standard hard disk drive for most of my data (Terabyte SSDs are expensive!) but having an SSD as your system/slow to boot program drive saves a bunch of time.

I've never really considered it. What does an SSD offer me?
Commented 7 years ago2017-05-31 10:29:03 UTC in journal: Updates Comment #52981
Throw in another 8gb of ram and an SSD and you're fine.
Its still a decent rig, you can upgrade to a 3000 series Intel CPU since they use the same socket (might warrant a BIOS update), but there are no real advantages unless you can get it cheap.

Anyway why aren't you getting an ssd already? I have Pentium 4's rocking those sweet flash storage devices :D there is no excuse not to have one now.
