You can specify how many threads you want the render to take. Go with half, and you can still use your computer a bit. Might be low on memory, but it'll work.

Also i still can't find the render pass option for bakes. Got a screenie?

I can always re-make it, i have all the source materials still.

Here's a texture i made up. 256x256. It took about 10 minutes.
The original next to it is 64x64.

Google some texture creation tutorials perhaps. Most professionals use Photoshop, but it costs money... so maybe grab some free image software like Paint.net or GIMP. Paint.net is easier to learn, but GIMP is more powerful i think.

A good place to start for base textures is Textures.com. (Formerly known as CG Textures)
Start a new image with like 300+ dpi, 512 by 512 pixels.
Your first layer is a base texture - essentially whatever material your object is made from (metal, wood, plastic etc etc)
And then start adding scratches and decals in new layers.

Great Idea striker!
To start that, when I make my first video, I'll put a link to the source material (located here) in the youtube video.

It can be re-organized once TWHL4 launches, but it's definitely time to bring TWHLs tutorials into the mid 2010's

That texture you posted is terrible TBH. Its stretched and blurry even in its original size so if you shrink it, it won't get better. You need a better staring texture.

What If i take some of the tutorials on this site and turn them into a video format?

For example, It might be worth exploring Detail textures for HL1 (in under an hour). I've never used them and it doesn't seem like a lot of people do.

I could use timelapse where necessary to speed things up

It's all about the scaling. If you put a 256x256 texture on a 64x64 box, you're getting 4x the resolution.

Can you show some screenshot comparisons?

in Clipping objects lead to errors Post #327859
I'd recommend using Sledge. Developed In-house here at TWHL by the webmaster himself, Penguinboy. It's an amazing replacement for Hammer, and it supports off grid verticies by default.

You might want to check wireframe to make sure there's only one face per plane too.

Also consider turning those props into entities such as func_detail or func_illusionary (with an accompanying clip brush)

in Modelling for HL in Solidworks Post #327519
Ultimately, you'll need to convert the model again before you can make a HL model, then you need to compile it.

I recommend blender, it's free and has plugins for Half life. So find a format you can export from solidworks, and import into blender. Then you'll need to add a single bone for a static model, or multiple bones and an animation for a dynamic (animated) model. Export that file to a .smd, and create a qc script to compile the model.

It's a pain to figure out for the first time, but once you get the workflow down, it's not too hard.

If you need help along the way, just ask.

Not sure what you're talking about there stu.
Every year i go to the same farm, pick a pumpkin off the vine and pay for it.

Then you open the top, scoop out the innards, and carve away.

Then you separate the seeds from the slop and bake them with salt and oil. Super good!

Also - This is my mini disguise for work

Hello Twhlers. I'm not sure how many of you celebrate Halloween, but I do! What are your plans / costumes / carvings this year?

Me, I have 2 costumes (one of which i will not post a photo of). One is for a party, and the other is a running gag with my friends based off a SNL video (the one you won't see :walter: )

So last Friday, my friends and I had a PumpkinPumpkinPumpkin night. We made a keg out of a pumpkin, tapped it, filled it with pumpkin beer, then drank said pumpkin beer while carving pumpkins.

Here's the end result of that night:

Short answer: Probably.

I have not played so much with sound in Source as I probably should have, but you have greater control over your entities than GoldSource. You can even set a custom radius instead of "small, medium, large".

Could use either a Soundscape or a run-time script to modify the volume.
