This is a good place to start your first website. They have templates if you don't know any HTML and can later migrate the account ONE-WAY to HTML when u get better at it. Plus, if your just starting out and don't have a lot of traffic/contect, the restrictions aren't that important.

fourthgen, no new cards actually HAVE VGA ports, you need an adapter, which will probably have to be HDCP compliant too 
I do realize DVD's have encryption too, but I'm sure they will try and tighten the DRM on the new formats a bit. They know that CSS can be cracked piss flakes, it wouldn't be that difficult for them to strenghthen it up a bit.

Performance. I play Enemy Territory with 16-bit color, low texture/model quality, low geometric quality and no atmospheric effects, and I don't give a crap about the graphics quality. I concentrate on the gameplay. However, for singleplayer games, I'd say a balance of both is good.
Too lazy to map at the moment, otherwise I would do something for it. All of my maps end up unfinished anyways.

Just try to make a sphere (there are tutorials out there), carve them into an object in the corners, put a single texture over everything, and scale it as small as hammer will allow and dont run vis, also enclose the map in a HUGE skybox.
I map for HL more than I play it, but I suppose I play Quake3 and RTCW/ET more than I map for them.
TWHL was much better "back then". Much less nubspammers.
