Yes, we've all seen this before, and we know how to fix it, but, there is something else about this error you shoud know.

The Solid Entity [func_wall] is empty errors, undetected, can add LOADS of time to your VIS compile.

Removing about 15 of these from one version of a map to another--which I had previously not detected--, decreased VIS compile time over 10 minutes!!!!!

I always assumed these "Solid Entity empty" errors were just minor annoyances, with no real toll on the compile time...boy was I wrong!!

Yay somebody saw it ^_^!!!

The speakerphone/conference phone was supposed to be that black triangle thingy on the conference table. Looking back, I guess that one wasn't that great :).

I started so late, I didn't even have time to think about the theme. With all the visible objects at the end, I was having some major performance problems with brushes and entities disappearing. At least a third of the "scorch" decals didn't even render in the final product.

little shiny or something.
Sure. I do that all the time for parts of brushwork that I want to "stand out" from the rest. just make the brigtness like 1-5 or something.

If you're trying it in a bright room of course, you won't notice. You might also experiment with the renderfx like glow/distort/hologrametc too.
What sort of reflection? Just a dull gleam, or like a mirror? The former can be achieved using a model...
Yeah, didn't de_plaka do that with the upstairs windows? Pretty cool idea.

Judgie comments please!

I personally didn't think the map turned out too great... and was greatly surprised at how much people liked it.

If anything, the most impressive thing imo were the little props, like the speakerphone, and water cooler in the conference room--which probably nobody else even noticed ^_^!

Or perhaps easier, especially if you have many fucn_walls:

1. Hit alt-p (toggles check for problems).
2. Click on the ""solid entity(func_wall)is empty" error.
3. Click "go to" button.
4. Exit "Check for Problems" Dialog box
5. Hit the DELETE key on your keyboard.

Should do it. Hit alt-p again to make sure the error is gone.

I am noob at model, but i could handle some simple props if you desire...

For the weapons I'm guessing you would decompile the original "arm" models holding the weapons, edit in you favourite impliments, recompile...wallop! (sure there is a little more too it than that though)

DM, FY versions FTW! (but not)

I dunno, SP missions are just so sad...once they are done, they are done :(.

The only real thing I play anymore with regularity is dod, and rarely cs.

That reminds me, are you doing model/sprite/sound replacements like in Rimrook's/Saco's latest mods?

Make the crowbar a phaser rifle with no charges, with the end all smashed up...

Having a tricorder would be pwn, but that would take some doing.

If you can't get it to work, just come on over to the dark side of Hammer expert compiling...it's nicer on the dark side ;)

I searched for that error and came up with zippo, even on Tommy's. I will beat the dead horse once more to say I've only seen that when I fail to update my wad.txt file in VHE/maps folder, for HLFix. [/dead_horse]

Why not include it in your [maps folder for shits and giggles to see if it does anything? Just include the paths to your wads, like so:

s:half-lifevalvehalflife.wad
s:half-lifevalvexeno.wad
s:half-lifevalvedecals.wad
s:half-lifevalvezhlt.wad
s:counter-strikecstrikecs_alpine.wad
s:counter-strikecstrikecstrike.wad

What have you tried? Tommy's page lists a lot of things like:

-Skybox as little as possible.
-Try Nem's batch compiler or others to trim clipnodes
-look at the example map listed

I don't really even know what clipnodes are, but check out this also from tommy's:
all the 3d 'space' a player can get to is broken up into convex regions
So maybe if you clip/sky any open-air regions of your map where the compiler "thinks" a player may want to walk, but you know they won't, it will cut you clipnodes down.

Throw an map in the problems section too if you want, and somebody is sure to take a crack at it.

Really I'm astuonded that anybody like those movies and TV series. The last and first time I watched Star Trek it was worse then a DRAMA show.

There are other episodes that showcase interesting access panels, in and out of jefferies tubes, that contain clusters of these neat chips, but I don't remember which.

The chips themselves look like slightly oversized, translucent, sony memory sitcks.

I know I've heard those sounds on my headphones too, but it's caused by having my radio plugged in to my microphone jack, and having the radio to close to my external power supply--laptop.

in Bad Surface Extents Post #181400
I just found something else that causes this!!!

It's ironic, because I've never really had this problem...or so I thought. Then I'm working on a map just today, and get the dreaded:
User posted image
I quickly scanned the compile log, and found nothing of interest, except this:
User posted image
I've seen this error before, but I didn't think it had anything to do with the Bad Surface Extents error. It has to do with us HLFix users and updating our wad.txt file, which is just a list of the paths/wads used, located in your VHEmaps folder.

For some reason, when switching my rig over to mapping for cs and updating my wad.txt file, I stupidly deleted zhlt.wad from it.

Now it should be said while i've omitted wads from that file before, it never resulted in Bad Surface Extents 'till now, and simply displayed the pink and black checker pattern in-game for those missing wads/textures.

The difference here I believe, has to do with the NULL texture. In this old map I was working on today, I had not one null textured brush in the whole thing, because I never used it on any of my old maps.

So, it compiled fine, until, you guessed it, I started nulling stuff... The coordinates the Bad Surface Extents error was giving me was exactly where I started "NULLing stuff". Again, because NULL is a special texture, It didn't just result in a missing texture(s) in-game, but the Nasty BSE error!

Omitting the NULLs, updating the wad.txt file, or toggling off HLFix all eliminated the problem.

Should also be noted that in other threads, on other forums about "Bad Surface Extents", I noticed at least one other compile log that had this FindTexture() error too...so it's a correlation of sorts.

So, add another thing to the list that causes the ever-elusive,

Bad Surface Extents ^_^!
