Hunter's method would work fine if you locked players into their own lane with clip brushes.

Nope never tried it yet! Nem's works for me and it's hard for me to change to something new after awhile, but I promise i'll try it. 
Yours IS a Batch Compiler too anyway, which is a perfectly acceptable replacement for Hammer compiles. Point i was tryin to make was don't compile with hammer.

Small suggestions so far(don't know if your updating or not):
-remove config.cfg soe it doesn't reset your binds
-Make a small, pre-intro map, so you can choose to skip the intro and go right to the hub.
I haven't really played any of the maps yet except to walk through some of the portals (which is a really nice effect btw).

I'd offer to make hammer props and detail existing architecture just for fun. I'm not really any good at Scripting, but am pretty versed with the original HL entities. Did someone say this is spirit?

Means it hasn't compiled.
If your just starting out, i'd highly recommend using the Batch Compiler to compile. Hammer compiles work perfectly for some people, but many people also claim it can be very buggy and do great things like compiling the wrong map, and refusing to compile certain filenames for no sensible reason.

Since the inner paths are all congruent (as well the all the outer paths), make ONE complete circuit for each, and then clone/drag the whole thing down. (you'll have to go through each one in the 3d view, and rename the path names obv)

Remake it! when i've lost stuff in the past, i found remaking it i made it 10-times better and much more efficiently. Oh well i look forward to seeing your fancy brushwork in future challenges1

edit: lawl Striker you edited while i responded. It's ok. there will always be another challenge to do. i might take a break from them too after the entity challenge too to spend more time on other projects too. (these little challenges can be quite time-consuming!)

It's true, but i don't think in the way you mean. When someone said "the best things in life are free" they meant the best things: Love, Respect, Major life achievements, etc... can not be purchased with money, but only your own blood, sweat, toil, and sacrifice. ( I can't remember where i read this, but it seems true to me.)
And not trying to gangpile you Mr. Rimrook, but I think there is constantly good new music being created all the time... i don't think that'll ever change! = ) (Unless you pigeonhole yourself in to one paticular type of music like classic rock for example, then yeah, nobody really makes a lot of new good stuff for that paticular type anymore)

It sounds like a nice idea to me Tosse, and i don't see any thing to be lost by giving it a try. Maybe don't make it a mandatory thing tho: the user can choose to use the form or not?

I started using WON just because Muzz's Quick Launch Program stopped working for Steam for me. = ) I think of WON as a nice backup too, and i've had no problems running almost every mod on it.
If you backup your computer--you should if you don't already-- i would include all the mod folders in your half-life directory as a priority to backup.
Try completey reinstalling Half-life, or if you really think someone is controlling your comp, restore your os with the factory DVD (i'm just about to do this on my comp, becuase i deleted a lot of shit trying to optimize, and the HDD is so fragmented it won't defrag... i bought the os/application restore dvd from the manufacturer for 11 bucks.)

Tetsuo: you can also use the alt-e scaling function to scale it down if you want. I know some brushwork purists don't like using that tool, but it's unimaginably useful imo. Just keep in mind if you shirnk it too small using alt-e, it will cause invalid solids. If you get the HOM effect on any of your brushwork after shrinking, make the the problem brush or brushes INDIVIDUAL func_walls to fix. Also, make sure you're absolutely finished with the piece before you shrink, because it will most likely put all your verticies off-grid, and subsequently it will be tough to edit it cleanly after that. potatis_invalid: It's ok with me if nobody else cares if you use spirit. It may be a little unfair, but it i don't care = )
Keep in mind like others have said there are many creative things you can do to make up with the limitations of HL and it's modest entities!
That makes me think... maybe we should have a Spirit Entity challenge after this one! I've never mapped for spirit and I would LOVE to try all extra entities.
My entry is going slowly but surely. Hopefully i can finish most of it this weekend.

I dunno, i would love to walk through elaborate example maps, like one devoted to depicting/explaining all the different render effects would be cool. Or one depicting reflection or water techincques would be cool too. Probably a hundred others I can't think of at the moment. Think of them as in-game tutorial of sorts.
I think if an experienced/good map maker came up with a list of 10 cool examples to do, you could come up with a very cool, informative set of maps.
The only problem i can see is less and less people map for Goldsource anymore, so the time frame for projects like this is shrinking towards the time when there's almost noone left mapping for HL1.
(We've fried this thread pretty good though, so maybe if someone is serious, they should start a new thread or have the irrelevant/non-useful posts deleted.)

I would love to a cooperative project, but you need a strong leader to set reasonable goals and be familiar with each member's mapping style and strengths, so he can give reasonable/effective assignments.
Off the top of my head I think HL_hotdog would be a good candidate if he were interested. If you guys can find a good coordinator with a solid idea/plan, i'm in.

That's pretty sweet; i could probably eliminate 10-15 icons from my desktop clutter, and just go ninja with hotkeys when needed. Me likey!

Tutorial looks good. other video tutorials you could see the grid a lot clearer though, not like it's a big deal. one thing maybe is reduce the grid intesity, maybe the brush lines will stand out better? I've never spent time playing too many flash games, but the first thing i'd like to do before i start learning flash and the scripting language is find some existing games that something similar to what we'd like to do, and then use that as a template or standard (size of players/environment, how weapons work, etc.)
The current place i'm interneting is doing a really good job of blocking every flash portal i go to, so I'm going to have to continue this later.
I did play the Portal flash game the other night, which was actually pretty awesome. (2d side-scroller) Maybe we can transition from 2d top-down to side-scrolling eventually)

This one involved where they give the some of test subjects a small cut or burn. Subjects who were told they were being hurt but actually weren't, developed red marks and swelling where they thought they were being hurt! Ones who were told they were not being cut/burnt, but actually were, had almost no noticable swelling or marks!
I'm not trying to discount vitamins by any means. I supplement with colloidal minerals\vitamin myself.

Flash is something that's always interested me immensely, but I never had a reason to use it before now. To all the naysayers: I understand your aversion to the idea (at least i think i do: this is a mapping site, not a flash game portal), but I guess i'm just bored with mapping for Goldsource, and I don't have my Source Mapping/modeling rig ready yet. Maybe I'm just getting tired/unsatisfied with mapping in general, and it's time for something new. We get the message that the majority of people don't want a HL flash game on this site, but instead of saying how bad an idea it is, why not at least give a reason or 2 why not... or don't, i really don't care! = )

I was going to port the model to HL1 and use it as a template in hammer to make it perfect, but i decided that would be kinda like tracing a picture and hence sorta lame. So, it will be far from perfect and quite a challenge !(it's shaped so weird! which is why i like it)

Maybe check your pitch, yaw and roll settings and make sure the camera is pointed exactly where you want at the start, otherwise i think, it will move to the info target position when triggered? (i'm guessing)

You can make a smoke effect using sprites tho. I always use:

Rendermode: additive
Fx amount: 255

I'm upgrading to 1GB for 30 bucks, but what HDD would you recommend?
I have an 5-year-old sony notebook that sucks, but it's perfectly fine for HL editing, so i plan on keeping it. The original 40GB HD is going though--she makes some weird noises now--and i wan't to replace it. My question is:
Is there a limit to the size/speed of a new HDD i can put in such an old laptop? Like, not saying i would, but would a 7200, 350GB HDD work in this old bitch?
