Hello everyone, new member here. I'm German, 21, and I'm one of those "mappers now and then" there are here and there :P . I started mapping for HL/CS many many years ago, but never got around to do anything worth even looking at. A couple of years later I tried to do mapping again and then a couple of years after that I did try again. And here it is 2009 and I'm on to try HL mapping yet again. A couple of days ago a friend came home and we played HL deathmatch on LAN. And thus the idea of making a custom map came to my mind again. And here I am, after looking for interesting resources, ideas, and the inner workings of some maps I wound up here. A lot of interesting mapping stuff crammed together in one place. Maybe a good place to share ideas and ask for advice on some things... it'll be interesting to see other HL geeks here ;)

PS. I'd rather not create a new thread for introducing myself but I was unable to post at the Hello thread (perhaps a mod can move this post?)

Hi there.

TWHL is one of the oldest mapping sites on the internet. It's got great resources.

The most valuable resource for this community is its members.

Really! I haven't come across this site until now. Not that I looked much actually, but I did search a lot for entities and sample maps back then. I got all reference from the Valve Collective ERC but it seems to be gone.

Is it bad that I still like the 10 year old HL1? And that I still want to map for it?

It all started with MapEdit for Wolfenstein...

Wash your mouth out with soap! Goldsource mapping is quite acclaimed here. Most of us are nostalgia junkies trying to get the most out of the old engine. ;)

See the left sidebar? Last link under the "Reference" section :)

EDIT: that's for all the VERC tutorials - for other references, see the Wiki.

Hi, and welcome to TWHL. Even the Source mappers here, myself included, still love HL1, so don't worry that it's 10 years old - it has the same effect on all of us :D

Welcome to TWHL. It's nice to see a new member who actually knows a bit about forums and mapping, one of the last guys wanted people to make a map FOR him.
I look forward to some good content out of you, and don't worry, HL1 still has a LOT of juice left in it.

@JeffMod: Maybe you guys can make me a nice new multiplayer map for my birthday? hehe jk. Who knows, maybe I can come up with good stuff to share.
And thanks for the link, sounds interesting so I'll take a look.

@WorldCrafter: what?? There are other DiscoStus?! AAAAAAHHHHH!
I'm not, so I guess that means I can't keep my username if I go there :P

How would you feel if one day someone registered as WorldCrafter? It is different after all!

I know "DiscoStu" != "Disco Stu", but it may look the same in a quick glance. Admins would tag me as a doppelganger or something and ban my ass from there.

And satchmo, how do you parse the three words?

Btw, you met me yet? I'm the useless hanger-on on this site. Heck, I haven't even mapped for several ice ages. Oh well. Hello, DS!

My original user name (Urbanebula) is extremely unique seeing as I made the word up. It was the best way to get a unique email address and later a unique website URL.

Anywho, back on topic:

Hello. Welcome to TWHL. I'm Urby the resident dude who shows up when theres cake and vanishes when its all gone. :)

Urby's shortened name is not-so-unique unfortunately.
But I always says Urbanebula as a combo word, like Urban + Nebula? >_>

He leaves in disappointment, the reason the cake is gone being that I got to it first. :D

As Strider puts it - i stick around here and quitely stir up shit. Especially in the journals and serious threads, nuthen like taken the piss out of things and when it comes to a rare D&M thread like this, i just couldnt resist! ha ha ha...ahhhh.... i kill me.
but really though, my 'days sinse joined' has reached over a 1000, and i thought now was time for some damn respect for Nine!

I also like contradiction on this site, even if its from me.

My name has been critisied... by "Captain Terror". Still, having joined 889 days ago, i can't remember what/how/when/where/who/why i got it.

PS i joined 889 days ago, but didnt come here for a looooooooong time at one point. I wouldnt be suprised if it was then when everyone had a party and Urby ate all the cake.

As for remembering names...

Rimrook is the 'cool' one...
Urby is the 'out-of-the-box' one...
Penguinboy is the 'big boss' one...
Hunter is the 'epic' one...
The Mighty Atom is the 'interesting' one...
Daubster is the 'master' one...
Strider is the 'watchful eye' one...
and ill stop there before someone lights the fireballs...

(fortunately im usually ignored anyway  )

Hi.
I'm Tetsu0
You pronounce the 0 like an o.
Like "Tet-Su-Oh"
Like The dude from Akira.
I've been here for 1611 days.
Quite a long time and i don't map much unless i have a deadline to loom over me and make me work.
I have gotten a 2nd place trophy which i'm quite fond about.
I look up to basically everyone here; Rimrook the most, but anyone else who can actually release a completed map.
Since Zero percent of my submitted maps are completed.

As far as confusion, I only ever mixed up Rimrook and WorldCrafter, only because of multiple periods when they had avatars with similar color schemes.
