that is a picture from inside of hammer

there are 732 solids
4440 faces
its demensions are 3360 W x 5312 L x 1044 H with out the sky

and only 1 1/2 buildings are destroyed. by the time ive made them all look destroyed the brush count will double. my computer takes over an hour to comple it as is. and until i get a new one in 2 weeks that wont change. the engine has a fit rendering it durnig game play. but it does look great. if we don't make this either for HL? and/or really good computers. it won't work very well

thats nasty. real nasty.

by the way, for inspiration on ruined cities phantom crash should provide osme good screenies. see if you can find any. or buy and xbox and get the game :D

don't you remeber the augument in the original i got an idea thread. i already have one.ill try to get the game soon. I got $1k for my computer and thats about all the money i have right now.

these buildings are a pain to make them look realisticly destroyed. te clip, move, repeat just keeps going on and on and ive been having trouble because to reduce r_speeds i left out the floors in the buildings which doesn't give me much to destory so it doesn't look very good
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-16 19:51:14 UTC Post #42105
Use func_walls and hint brushes.
That scene up there can be done with really low r_speeds.
If this ever splits into hl1 and hl2, I'll stay with the hl1 team too.
I hope this'll never happen, though.
It's more of a challenge to make it on hl1.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-17 05:29:44 UTC Post #42226
yo udo it wrong, make a small part wiht level chnages, and the player doesnt need total freedom, work in the story line, in hl you cant give the player total freedom wiht out a supercomputer.

and yes, i dont want to make this for hl2 yet.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-17 07:43:12 UTC Post #42229
Well fair enough. But aslong as you are absolutely sure this will work well in HL1. I suppose by doing it this way you get to test out the idea, and if it goes well the mod can always be upgraded -- I think.

Jahzel, When my new website gets uploaded, check out the screenies i've got. It's basically just an old deserted pub, with monsters ;) . I think it might fit well in this city. It is very unfinished so far though. I'll post again when the site is up :)

omg is that the hl engine? because that looks absolubtly fantastic! great work!

no its the 3dtexted view from hammer maximized. anyway its all blury for some reason it acculy look better then what your seeing. and when HL reders it with the lighting it looks great.

and if I make them all func_walls then we will have more missing faces problems.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-17 13:30:43 UTC Post #42305
your doing the mapping wrong, thats the problem. you got to make the player follow a determained path. not the freedom. he needs to be focused in the goal: escaping.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-17 15:16:35 UTC Post #42342
when all the buildings are finished only about 2 roads will lead out of the area and not be unpassable because of rubble.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-17 18:14:30 UTC Post #42379
i really dont see a problem with making this for hl2.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-17 21:18:59 UTC Post #42414
I think it'd be more impressive on the Half-Life engine rather than on Source. Everyone's gonna be releasing mods left right and centre when Half-Life 2 comes out and I'm willing to bet that the majority of them will be poor (not that I'm saying this one will be). I say stick to the Half-Life engine for now and finish it. When it's finished in Half-Life then you might consider making a Half-Life 2 version.

i havent got the site up yet. it going to need some more work. and alot of changes due to all this crazy hl1 - hl2 conflict. the site will stay devoted to the hl2 project.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 15:09:08 UTC Post #42570
the map is pretty big and complicated and my computer cant handle it. anyone for me to mail it to to get it compiled. i still have 3 buildings to finish up and that should be done by tommorow. the street i was going to give a screenshot of to ministeve to is done though. so anyone in this project with a good computer.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 15:14:57 UTC Post #42572
DONT MAKE IT SO BIG.
the player cant have total freedom.
how hard is it to understand that. you need to make him follow a path, not a hugh city. give the impression of a hugh city. but make sure he needs to follow a path, its no morrowind ore something like that.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 15:15:26 UTC Post #42573
if it was hl2 it could be total freedom.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 15:23:39 UTC Post #42576
but it is not, and hl2 is already based in a destroyed city, so it would be unoriginal.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 15:32:24 UTC Post #42580
and thats your excuse for using an engine made last millenia.

yup
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 17:02:44 UTC Post #42606
its not that big and there is only one path the player can take out of it now. so is there anyone who could compile it for me.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-18 17:57:41 UTC Post #42623
@trapt: Make your images smaller!!!
You use 320*240 images that are 100kb large.
You could make them like 20kb without a noticable loss of quality.
Please don't use HL? for this!
There'll be thousands of mods comming out soon.
It'd be no challenge on the new engine.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-19 06:21:03 UTC Post #42747
I agree, HL? would just destroy the challenge of making this. Plus, there will be heaps of mods for HL? when it comes out that are just like this.

Pepper is right. You can't just let the player stroll around the city as he likes. He needs to follow a path or have a couple paths to follow at once.

Oh, and what's gonna happen to the maps Jahzel made at the start? Will they still be in the mod? I don't think that Jahzels map at the start will fit in very well with the city that M_gargantua has made. Maybe its fenced of from the rest of the city and you have to get wire cutters to cut a hole in the fence or something?

@hazardous!: Didn't notice that, thanks for telling me. :)

Do you know DeusEx?
It had huge freedom to offer for the player, though it was just the old Unreal engine.
I think this could be possible with HL too.
The maps Jahzel built fit right in, imho. They could be those places where a gang lives or so.
Some rotten factories are just right for the ambient.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-19 07:52:27 UTC Post #42767
Well, the map I made (the one that has green light) is an undergound area -- the places that the Upper Hand live and control. You have to be stealthy in the game down there because they can be potentially dangerous. There isn't that many (if any) zombies in those areas of the city because the Upper Hand have cleared and secured most of the underground.

As for the HL2 or 1 arguemnet, I have mixed feelings. (I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure ;) ) Part of me goes with pepper, you cant really have total freedom - just the illusion. But another part of me stays in awe of hl2's power. In the city, there aint just a few zombies - there are hundreds. There are too many to just eliminate yourself. That's whats meant to add to the difficulty of survivng. In hl1, I have a bad feeling about its ability to handle this. Too many models for it to handle.

But anyway, garg -- a good tip:

Making cities is hard because the roads you would need have to blocked in some way. Look at the training level in Max Payne. There is a road area and a subway entrance. You don't just walk down the road to get out, you have to enter the subway. Use anything, big trucks that have jack-knifed during the chaos before the zombie outbreak, Vehicle pile-ups, barriers (millitary), fencing, etc.

Trapt: I definately like the horror pub map. Those shadows are just plain cool, nice one.

and ill make a list of all the rest i need. the ones that come to mind right now are

-general building textures

-transformer texture

-a porcilin texture

-a black rubber texture

-a good 128x128 sidewalk texture

thats about it for now. ill try and think up more
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-20 00:45:41 UTC Post #43052
I don't consider myself a huge texture artist, but I could modify some of my photos to create textures from...I have a couple places I could get some old ugly carpet/office-ish textures from... cough*Air Force Base basement*cough. I seem to have a cold, that was a looong cough ;) . Go see my site if youre intrigued. (About the AFB, not the textures. Off topic but oh well)

I have some black rubber-ish textures (would you need them for a tire tread? I have those too), porcelin textures, some building ones, old signs, and I could mod a good 128x128 sidewalk one from an existing texture.

I also happen to have Swat3 and it has a huuuuge texture library, so I could modify a few of their textures.

Hmm, good to hear you like the pub. :D

There are stools in there, by the counter, hard to see in the screenies though. I thought maybe there could be a stool leg just outside the door as the first weapon? Well, you will need some kind of weapon to face what's in there ;)

I was thinking there would have to be a main street, with old shops, pubs and stuff in there, which would be where you start off. The whole city can't just be big industrial buildings, there has to be more.

Hmm, well theres my thoughts for the moment :) .

And Rabid, I will download your textures soon. :)

rabidmonkey, can you make texture all drawn by yourself.??
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-20 07:52:16 UTC Post #43126
Well, I downloaded Rabid Monkey's texture pack, so I'll be looking at that shortly. Listen, I'm going away on thursday till round about tuesday, maybe even wednesday -- don't quite know yet ;)

And, tomorrow, I am getting broadband, my god when does dial-up end!!!!!!! :badass: Bare in mind that I'll be able to do a lot more then, so I can send you all my texture pack and any maps that you might want. I have some unfinished maps, like for instance a large subway, and a train exit type of thing, which I think you might find useful.

Yeah trapt is right about the city, there are lots of ruined shops/shopping centres that people had looted in the past. There can also be big trucks smashed about the place, as though the had jacknifed and toppled over or into a shop. If there are supermarkets, every shelf is practically empty -- with the odd exception of a few old boxes.

I dont think there should be the 'gunshop' cliche either. Most zombie flicks and games always have a handy gunshop, that would be too easy.
Instead, maybe the shotgun and handgun can be obtained from the carcass of a dead policeman (if the weapons haven't already been taken by others).. I'll probably be discussing these ideas with my cousin over the next few days, he will almost definately have some good ideas as he has loads of zombie/horror/stoner films to watch!

And pepper, I have two weapon design concepts I drew a while back. One of them is this sort of rifle with a long barrel, ak-47 type of clip, and just a handle.. The other is a kind of high-tech looking machine gun... Don't know how useful they are to you, but I just thought I'd mention it...
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-20 09:02:51 UTC Post #43142
high tech weapons should only be availible in the upper hands caves.
