Does anyone have any experience with 1440p displays? I'm in the market and would love some recommendations.
I've been looking at the Asus PB278Q, but it's not massively spec'd towards gaming whereas the PG278Q seems to be far more geared towards it. I'm just wondering if the massive price difference is actually going to amount to a big enough difference in image quality for a casual gamer to justify the cost.

Thoughts?

I'm well aware that you guys have been laughing at me behind my back due to my woefully underpowered system, so I've decided to finally do something about it.
You may remember my previous upgrade - the Nvidia GTX 780 Ti which did extremelyexciting things to my 3D Mark score. As you can see, the overall score was let down considerably by the lacklustre first-generation i7 CPU.

I have remedied the situation with a new motherboard and CPU combo, bringing my score up to a blistering 9898 on Fire Strike - an achievement-unlocking score that is apparently higher than 93% of all worldwide Fire Strike results. Nailed it.

So what has powered this ridiculous score?
The main upgrade is of course the CPU - I went for a Haswell Intel Core i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz. It's apparently an overclocker's dream, but the base clock of 4GHz has already blown me away.

Supporting it, I went for the Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA Z87 motherboard. It's a real beauty and the upgrade from my previous two USB3 slots to seventeen million (I counted) is invaluable to me as someone who works with video.

I had some teething problems after reinstalling Windows, but thankfully everything has been ironed out and this beast of a machine is ready to splatter games all over the walls.

Footnote:
I had planned this purchase for months and saved up significantly and specifically for it, waiting for a drop in the price of these components after meticulously researching them. Don't impulse buy components, you'll miss out on great deals!

In under a month the most important vote in my lifetime will take place. I am super psyched. Scotland finally has the chance to be free from the despicable far right elite in England.

All English and Welsh TWHLers will be welcome on my couch if they wish to emigrate after the vote. :D

Here's a great discussion on the matter if you want to get informed from an outsider looking in.

And here's an article that sums it up pretty brilliantly.

I Was DoP on a completely bonkers shoot last week. It's one of the most ambitious indie films I've ever worked on! Amazing fun. We had a freakin' stunt horse!

This is one of those amazing things that'll stick with me forever. Total commitment to the setting from the cast made it such a surreal experience. So much fun.

My cat died this morning :[

Got a big pit in the bottom of my stomach, it's horrible. You don't appreciate things that have been with you your entire life until they're gone. She lived to the grand old age of 21, which for cats is pretty damn old. But yeah, I'm only 22. She's just always been there. nnnngggrgh.

FEELS AND INABILITY TO EXPRESS THEM BECAUSE I AM MANLY AND NOT CRYING LIKE A LITTLE BITCH.

Freelancing is a terrifying prospect. I can make more in a day on the right job than I would in a month of permanent employment, yet there is absolutely no guarantee of work.
After an embarrassingly bountiful end to 2013, the work dried up during Jan and Feb (Very few shows get shot in the winter months due to lack of daylight hours, so there's almost no post-production work until spring) and I took an unavoidable break.

However, I got hit with a massive tax bill of £900 because I earned more than I expected in December last year so I've had to go back to a permanent job for the moment because I can no longer wait for the freelance work to pick up. What's the job? Post-production Coordinator. Minimum contract of 3 months. Been here 2 weeks and already bouncing off the walls out of lack of creative output. I'm managing 8 edit suites and a dub suite. Managing. Not using. Nnggg.

What's particularly annoying is that literally two days after starting this position, I got offered one of the most lucrative freelance gigs of my entire career (VFX on Irn Bru's official Commonwealth Games ad - anyone familiar with Scotland will understand why that's a huge deal) and I've had to turn it down.

tl;dr:
When I'm freelance, the security of permanent seems so appealing. When I'm permanent, I get super exciting freelance opportunities.

I made a video tutorial which is sadly not supported on TWHL, but if you have any interest in how I made my 'evolution' videos to promote The Core, check it out on Youtube.
I'd love some feedback!

Hello. My name is Vladimir.

I am a bareback double IPA. Gasp as I ride semi-naked on horseback through the Siberian tundra and straight down your throat.

I am 100% hetero and will pass laws to prove it. Drinking me gives you the energy, ignorance and dogmatism required to shoot a deer (with your top off), go river fishing (with your top off) and pass internationally denounced, discriminatory legislation (top optional) before you've even had your caviare breakfast.

I contain sexual performance enhancing limonnik berries - power only to be harnessed by those engaging with the opposite sex, of course.

From Russia, without love,
Vlad.

Warning: May contain traces of sarcasm and protest.

Arguably one of the oddest jobs I've ever had was doing the live graphics for this Duel in the Pool swimming event on a massive screen in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.
It involved chroma keying eighty athletes in two days on-site, and one of the quirks of being freelance is that I often have to provide my own kit - cue the use of my lights, my green screen and my PC. I am, however, entirely okay with spending two days chroma keying round bottoms in swimsuits and a cute blonde presenter.

My workspace was in the walkway between the warmup pool and the main pool so it was unbelievably weird working away as eighty half-naked Olympians marched back and forth past me. Also I had to do the entire job without shoes on, as walking poolside with shoes is forbidden.

It was very, very cool seeing my work on the big screen displaying in front of a capacity crowd over a whole four-day event, but that was an incredibly odd job.

My Windows 8.1 adventure:

Hour 1: Jesus backflipping Christ this is the worst thing I have ever used. Why is there no shut down button? Why is there no X to close windows? WHY ARE THERE NO WINDOWS IN A WINDOWS OS?

Hour 2: Fucking hell, I had to spend £5 just to get a proper Start Menu (off the great guys who made Objectdock which I've used for years, incidentally).

Hour 3: OK, most of my programs are re-installed or repaired... Seems to be vaguely working. But wtf is this metro shit? Right, disabling that altogether. Third party software required to do so.

Hour 4: Ok, so it took me 4 hours just to disable the password login at startup. I am the only person who uses this PC. I do not need a password screen preventing me from leaving it booting up. Why is this shit hidden behind a command prompt, 6 menus and a properties button?

Hour 5: OK, in fairness it does boot up incredibly quickly. The reason I know this, however, is because I'm having to restart every five fucking minutes as I make major changes to the UI. Also some things are crashing worryingly often and 'End Task' is as reliable as it was in Win7 (i.e. not at all) WHERE IS 'END PROCESS'??!?!

Hour 6: I very much enjoyed the simplicity of gadgets in Win7. They weren't pretty, but having a big clock and temperature readouts of my hardware on my second monitor was very useful. This is literally impossible in Win8 because Desktop mode is basically not supported. More third party software required. Went with the often-praised RainMeter and despite its terrible UI (For a UI changing program, go figure) it has actually done a pretty great job.

Hour 7: Win8 has a good App Store. Seriously, there're some really useful things like a dedicated Netflix app. OH THEY CAN'T BE USED IN DESKTOP MODE? WONDERFUL. Well, OK, I'll just make a shortcut to them that'll launch Metro. OH YOU CAN'T. Oh someone on Google has figured it out with an idiotically complicated shortcut available for download? Oh nice, it works. Let me just add the shortcut to StarDock because I enjoy an icon-free desktop. NOPE. DOESN'T WORK.

Hour 8: Watched Netflix on Chrome like usual.
SO much style over substance, that was horrible. It's pretty much in a workable state now, but that took a LOT of Rainmeter tinkering and disabling the Metro UI altogether. Managed to get Ultramon and Objectdock working again as well, so it's starting to feel more like my beautiful Win7 setup. I guess it's not as bad as a Mac because I was eventually able to set it up properly, but the fact that it TRIED to be as bad as a Mac and then hid all the advanced options to change it back is forecasting Windows going in a scary direction. Stick to your strengths, lads.
