It may be prohibitively expensive for a lot of players at the moment, but that won't be the case for long. VR gear is getting cheaper with every year, only a matter of time before it becomes widely accessible.

Think of the performance jump from HL1 to HL2, that game needed an expensive machine to run properly when it just came out. I had to deal with like 10fps on my first playthrough. A couple years later most middle-of-the-road rigs would run it w/o problems though.

As others have mentioned, start off small, and work your way up. Use tutorials/C++ books to learn the very basics before tackling any real projects.

Instead attempting to make your own games when you've just started learning C++, try modding existing games/engines for starters. It always helps to have something that's already working in front of you, where you can mess around, make small changes and immediately see results on-screen. I remember one of the first bits of C++ I wrote was in the HL1 game code, where I wrapped the bit that spawned gibs when a scientist was killed in a for loop, increasing the gore by 10x. Seeing how big of a visual change two additional lines of code made got me hooked immediately.

That being said, I wouldn't suggest GoldSource as a starting point - a lot of that codebase is very much out-of-date (some of it is like 20 yrs old at this point). Try the Unreal Engine, their codebase is fantastic, and there's loads of documentation/demos available, where you can play around stuff that already works.

Finally, if C++ is the first programming language you're attempting to learn, I would also consider starting off with a simpler variant in order to grasp the very basics. C# is a far more easy-to-use (and in some cases more powerful) variant of the language, that would help you wrap your head around C-based language basics without having to consider the low-level memory management that you'd inadvertently run into when using C++. Unity is a great game engine that runs on that language, very much beginner friendly, loads of documentation, etc.

A lot of programmers/game developers here (myself included) have gone through the initial urge to create something huge as their first project (own rendering engine, game, etc.), and have fallen flat on our faces tons of times. Your initial goal should be finding a way to learn the basics without getting discouraged, setting small goals to keep yourself interested/motivated to keep going. Plan for the long haul and you'll get there. :)

The response video raises some good points, I haven't considered Hatred from that standpoint. I guess you can compare it to the COD: Modern Warfare 2 airport massacre scene regards to shock value etc., except the former isn't rewarding you for taking part, and gives you an option to walk through it w/o firing at anyone.

Maybe calling it sadistic was the wrong choice of words. I think it's more reductionist of the massacre itself. If you set up a game in a location where a mass shooting happened, and the gameplay has two equally equipped factions battling out (i.e. CSDM), that goes against the original story where unarmed innocents were pointlessly murdered. It reduces its impact on the player, and fails to explore it. The title implies that, regardless of the author's intentions.

Bottom line is I don't think these things shouldn't exist at all, but it's up to the creator to do right by the original event the game/map is based on. And sure, dick around for the lulz etc., but that's in extremely poor taste at the end of the day.

A headshot CS map set in the Columbine would be more akin to a 9/11 flight sim where you try to inflict the max. possible damage to the towers, as opposed to something showing the horrors the victims faced. It's more akin to playing a nazi executioner in your concentration camp example as opposed to someone trying to survive/break out. It's not insightful, not eye-opening - it's plain sadistic.

Why not follow the balancing rules set out in the game itself? The disbalance is already accounted for via kill reward money.

In that system an awp kill would be worth 1/3 of a ticket, SMG kills would be worth 2 tickets, shotguns would be 3, etc. I don't mind autosnipers being set to 0 (they can be insane in some spots), but an AWP is a great situational weapon that has perfectly legitimate tactical uses. And it's further balanced via its purchase cost as Dimbark said.

Totally agreed re: autosnipers being worth 0 tickets, but deducting points for awp kills seems ridiculous. I can understand it can be overpowered sometimes, but surely there's better ways to balance that. :P

Got back into CS:GO, been playing competitive for a few days now. Enjoying Operation Bravo, loads of sexy maps.

Horrible at the game, but the matchmaking tends to send equally-bad players my way about half of the time. The other half we get bear-mauled. It's a nice balance. :glad:

I'm pretty sure materials/sounds are irrelevant. The reflections are determined based on the player's view angle relative to that of the surface being shot.

I program touch-screens for industrial control systems.
When i finish early on a project, I'll program a hidden game into the system.
The screens have the ability to run scripts in a bastardized C language.

It doesn't exist. I've not seen it anywhere and the closest thing to it is a well made help file.
Blender has a search-for-tools feature afaik. Could be a neat addition to Sledge.

Tetsu0's idea makes the most sense - you could even go for a common Dr.Who-esque booth/pod transporting you between the different worlds. Custom transition sequences for each level & everything.

The original projects that let you compile the .dlls were written in Visual Studio 6, but using that nowadays is very impractical on any OS beyond Win XP.

You can convert the projects to any newer version of Visual Studio - it will just take some effort to fix up the various semantic issues in the old code for it to work with the newer compilers. That may be tricky if you're new to C++ though, in which case I'd probably try & set up VC6 somehow like zenaro suggested.

Windows opens up more possibilities as far as running multiplayer mods goes (most mods don't provide linux binaries), but either will work fine if you're just running CS:GO.
