in THE RETURN OF URBAN FICTION! Post #154784
Hey guys. This is another of my fan fiction threads but this time the story really will depend on you. Below are three introductions to 3 different stories. The first is based on HL2 the second on HL1 and the third is of my own creation entirely. Only one of the stories will continue. Which one is up to you. From there on it will continue like my last story as a multiple choice story.

You'd better be in a reading mood if your gonna check this thread out.

--Norton's Blog--
--Day 1--
--The Revolution of City 12--

I remember the way the combine were on edge on the morning of the rebel uprising. There were more metrocops on the streets on this particular day than any other. Its like they knew it was coming. Why they didn't mobilize sooner I will never know. All I do know is that they were caught off their guard by the "Free Man."

Me and Boyd were waiting for our train to City 12 that afternoon when the reports of several, large scale attacks on outposts in City 17 came booming through on the stations announcment system. The messages were rushed and panicked. Combine guards started to shift around on their feet, uneased by the disturbing reports. Hell, they even started to attack citizens who so much as looked at them funny.

I remember watching as two grunts dragged a woman and her husband into a corner of the platform and opened up on them with their machine guns until the clips were empty. It was a truely horrific sight. The bodies were reduced to bloody pulp and the concrete walls around them were devasted and splattered with brain matter. Boyd didn't stand for it. He rushed at the two soldiers with a broken beer bottle he had found on the floor. I didn't even notice until he let out a howling cry. The conscripts both reloaded their weapons and fired rounds into his body. The shots ripped out of his back and shattered the cinder wall behind us. Blood sprayed into my eyes and I was blinded. I fell back against the wall and slumped down into a crumpled ball. I could hear the footsteps getting closer and I waited for the shots.

Suddenly there was a shuffling on the steps at the opposite end of the platform. A barrage of gunfire was fired in both directions until there were two loud thuds not far from where i sat. I wiped my eyes and waited for the smoke to clear. The two sentries were flat on the floor, blood pumping out of the gaping wounds in their bodies onto the tile floor. Sombody was approaching me with their hands outstretched. I grabbed their arm and climbed to my feet.

"Good to see we got one guy out of it." the figure said "Come on. You are now part of an operation to liberate City 11."

I remember thinking that I didn't wan to fight for their cause. I wanted to mourn Boyd's death properly, although the rebels used that against me too.

"Was he a friend of yours?" said another of the figures, kneeling beside the remains of Boyd's corpse.

"Yeah." I said

"Then you will fight to avenge him."

This guy had known me for less than twenty seconds and already he had taken charge of me. I understand that it is wrong to judge on a first impression but this guy wasn't even trying. As the smoke cleared I could see the men clearly. There were three altogether. The officer was stood in front of me. He looked pale and tired, while at the same time looking like he could make a combine elite cry. A scar ran down the side of his face from his lip to the left of his forehead, blinding the eye as it passed.

"That's quite a scar." I said.

"Antlions." He said. "Little bastards when they get up close."

At the time i thought that this was bullshit. All the stories I heard about the antlions resulted in one less man or woman. Nobody ever fought out on the outside and survived to talk about it. At least thats what we all believed. The truth was once you were out of the city walls there was no point going back.

"Captain Gregory McConnell." he said "We'll get you over to the base on the outskirts and get you into shape. Ok?"

"Yeah," I wanted to tell him to shove it up his arse but he looked like he would kill me if I tried anything. "sure thing."

"This is Private Larry Hoskins and Private Simon Bates."

He pointed over to the other men. Hoskins was the medic, he was looking over the remains of the bodies in the corner. Bates was the radio operator who was checking over his gear. He paused as he felt something in the side of the radio pack.

"Shit!" he yelled

He slung the pack from over his shoulder and looked at it close up. He threw the pack onto the floor. I hissed across the gritty floor before coming to rest at my feet. There was a bullet hole in the side spewing out smoke.

"Calm down private." McConnell piped up. "Just be sure to pick up another at the base."

"Yes sir."

"Jesus Bates." said Hoskins "Thats the third time this week."

"Hey fuck you Larry!" Bates was red in the face "I can count how many times my shit's been hit."

"Consider your self lucky Bates." McConnel interupted "It could have been your leg. Stop this squabbling anyway. Grab you gear and lets move out."

--Dr. Henderson's Blog--
--Day 1--
--The Big Day for Sombody Else--

I placed my empty coffee mug on the table. Opening up the spreadsheet that I had seen far to many times before I glanced at the clock in the corner of the screen.

"8.00am" I said. "Time to start again."

"What?" Peter was sitting behind me.

"Just thinking out loud." I said

I began the tedious process of punching the results of the previous nights simulation into the spreadsheet.

"Anti-Mass Spectrometer - 80%"
"Extra Boost (Must not exceed 100%) - 25%"

"---WARNING : Spectrometer Boosted to 105% Continue Y/N?---"

I wasn't even thinking when the message popped up on the screen. Surprised I glanced at the papers to check whether there had been a calculation error. Below the 25% boost was a small note penned in.

"25% increase authorized by Dr. W. Breen."

I continued somewhat cautiously. Pressing the keys very slowly.

"Sample Origin Sector? (Xen.1 - Xen.15)?"

Scanning the sheet I found the sample had come from 'Xen.9.' I continued, completely oblivious to what Xen was.

"Sample Reactivity - 100%"

"---WARNING : Possible Resonance Cascade Scenario! Continue? Y/N?---"

Again I scanned the sheet of paper.

"RCS safety protocol in place. Dr. W. Breen."

I had no idea what a resonance cascade was, being a level 1 tech, so I continued.

"---Simulation In Progress---"

The simulation process took at least 10 minutes everytime so I dashed to get another coffee. On my return a message was blinking on the screen.

"---Simulation Complete---"
"---Efficiency 100%---"
"---(Note that efficiencies do not include Cascade or Flux probability!)---"

"Hey," I turned to peter. "Check this out."

"Woah, Call Sector C!" he squeaked.

"Will do."

I phoned through to the Anomalous Materials Lab to tell them the good news. Finally after all these months the experiment could take place. The guy on the end of the phone was very excited.

"Great Scott!" he yelled "Thank you Docter Henderson!"

No sooner had I put the phone down there was a crackle and the power cut out.

"Great," said pete, his smile turning to a frown "looks like its gonna be one of those days."

--Sgt. Demalo Cashima's Story--
--6th March 2056--
--Clearing Out Ballerville--

Demalo looked out over the street, surveying the situation. Limbs and pieces of human carcass lay strewn across the cement floor, blood smeared in all direction by pure force or dragging. The creatures had made short work of the civilians in this part of town. He raised his bolt action rifle, the barrel up in front of his face, aimed at the sky. He reached round into his side saddle pack and pulled out his beyonet. He slowly clicked it into place just as somthing scuffled in one of the shops to his left.

"OH FUCK NO! PLEASE!" A man screamed for his life as he burst out of the front door of a chemist and ran towards Demalo. "PLEASE HELP ME!"

The windows of the chemist shattered as one of the beasts hammered itself through after its prey. It was one of the bigger ones. Its moist, armour plated back shimmered in the dim light as its six heavy legs rushed across the floor, its vertical mouth gnashing furiously. Even with Demalo's formidable accuracy the poor guy didn't stand a chance. Within seconds the creature was upon him, its antennae rattling in delight. His screams got even more high pitched as it took him into its jaws.

"ARGH! OH SHI-" With a loud crunch the creature slammed its jaws tightly around the guys head and torso

Demalo didn't even flinch as the guys body was mashed into paste and swallowed into the creatures hideous maw. His legs were left standing and slumped to the floor adding to the excessive carnage in the street. The creature looked up and raised its armour plated brow. It spotted Demalo at the end of the street, its single green eye glistening with the thrill of quenching the intence hunger these things carried. Another man was just another fresh meal. The rotting remains of the dead would be left for the scavangers later.

"Demalo?" His headset crackled into life "Whats the situation on Diamond Street? Over."

"One Flat Top." Demalo said "Nothing serious."

"Good. Finish it and get back over to the square."

"Roger."

The Flat Top was rattling its antennae again, ready for another quick feast. It rushed across the street, stepping over the decaying mounds of flesh and organs. Demalo didn't hesitate. He aimed down his sights. He fired a shot into the creatures head, it flinched but continued running. He flicked the bolt up, rejecting the empty shell, clicked it back and fired again. The bullet hit the creatures armoured brow, smashing through the pulsating eye. It stopped in its tracks and bolted back, falling onto its topside with its legs writhing in the air. Demalo ran up and jumped onto the stomach, plowing his beyonet between the chest plates into the soft heart. The Flat Top let out a scream as Demalo sliced the blade upwards into the throat severing several veins and creating a gushing fountain of green blood. The creature slashed and kicked furiously into the air. Then it began to calm and finally the limbs went limp.

Demalo stepped back onto the concrete street and turned towards the end of the street. Gunfire was coming from the square. He reloading his rifle and swung it round onto his back. He began running towards the square, his long leather coat flapping in the icy breeze. Nearly at the end of the street Demalo stopped. The ground was rumbling under his feet. It got more intence until Demalo could hear the sqeaking metal tracks of a mercinary tank just around the corner.

The Mercinary patrol came the end of the street. The 4 grunts marched in front of the tank. Their armour and urban camoflauged uniforms left absoltutly no skin on display. They were armour plated knights with glowing red eye lenses. The turned and spotted Demalo in the middle of the street and reacted in the only way that hardened mercinary drones knew how. They raised their weapons. One of them raised his hand to the radio panal on the side of his head.

"Come with us or you will be destroyed! Comply!"

7 day war
???

I don't suppose you mean the seven hour war?

I'd say B. If he's in with the formation he has 1) Safety within the group and 2) All the cover fire he needs.

Running to either the trashcan (flimsy cover in the first place) or the alley would single him out and before you know it KE-KE-KE-KE-KRACK! The skull is emptied out onto the street.

So yeah, B.

Nicely done. I got another of those images for a moment. Mark crouching down in the middle of a dark and dingey room next to his sleeping friends with a battered sterio system crackling away. I even imagined the music coming through to be frazzeled and tinny. Nice work. The pre-battle tension comes through rather well.

B)

The other 2 options mean that there's a possiblility Mark will get drafted in with some other group. Remember what happened last time with Captain Holden? Pfft.

Oh wait, he was my character. I'd almost forgotten.

Well, this is going to be less complimentary than the last comment I left.

This is all still very good and very involving. The description of the overpowering citadel in the moonlight was very good. Once again I could see it in my head as I read it. However, the choices you have given are a bit bland. I'll say D.

It was originally an idea of mine for either Mark or Fitz to hook up with Amber. It would have depended on the readers choices aswell.

Also the lack of action...actually its not a bad thing. I had the next few options set in my head before I gave in writing this. Many of the choices led to the death of some of the characters. Hell, when I was writing it in one chapter (with the strider) the voters just skimmed the chance of killing Mark off! The story would have then gone to Fitz's point of view cos Mark and Fitz are rather alike.

HL became an obsession I had back then. Hell, in one of my Drama classes I jumped at the role of a security guard / police officer type guy and my teacher told me that I had both a good posture (barneys hands behind the back standing pose) and a great American accent although it was a little out of place (everyone else was English).

Forgive the title. Ok so here it is. I've been doing some thinking over the past week or so and one of the thoughts that crossed my mind is this.

I only know my fellow TWHL members (you lot) through TWHL so saying "You're always on TWHL you nerd!" would be unfair and highly hypocritical.

So, what do you guys (and girls, ((c'mon theres gotta be at least 1!?)) do when your not on the net? I don't mean school or work because thats obvious. What else do you guys do?

Here's the low-down on myself:

For the past 2 years I've been at college which resulted in a fail anyway. Waste of time. Nowadays I very rarely get on the net but when I do I always come straight here.

Otherwise I relax infront of the TV or just chill in my room listening to Green Day or MCR and often think "What first. Dyed hair, Piercing or Tattoo."

Very rarely I'll go for a drive depending on the weather and those of you who do drive will know that with a good CD (or not) on a quiet day there is nothing quiet as relaxing as a good cruise through the country / town/ city or whatever.

My favourite occupation at the moment is my new G/F. I quite often hang around with her if she isn't working. Also she lives about 15 minutes out into the countryside so I get the pleasure of the aformentioned 'cruise' at the same time.

Otherwise I'm here. I don't really play games anymore either which is odd because a month ago I would be flopping bodies all over the place in GMod. Strange how something can change you.

So thats pretty much it. If you want you can post something about you or you can shun off this thread muttering "depressing bastard" under your breath. I don't really give a shit but I thought it might be interesting.

Urban out- ;)

Mostly playing tracks:

4. You know what they do to guys like us in prison.
5. I'm not OK (I promise)
6. Ghost of you
9. Thank you for the venom
11. It's not a fashion statement, it's a fucking death wish
13. I never told you what I do for a living

Great album. I only started really listening to MCR recently due to current events (see 'Urbanebula's Apology' thread)

Hey guys. Got a load of shit sorted out in the last 3 weeks.

Today I finally got my internet access back and I decided somthing. I can never stick to a mod long enough to complete it so here's my brainwave. I will now be creating an episodic series of maps. The map will be like my fan fiction in that every now and then a new section will be released with a choice at the end of each.

Of course this series will have its own webspace and a forum dedicated to your choices. There will also be bonus features on the webiste when its up.

I will not be continuing the fan fiction of course. That ship has sailed under the command of another captain i'm afraid.

use the animations 'pondering' 'pondering2' and 'pondering3' without the quotes. And make sure the scripted sequence is facing the object he is observing.

Yeah, you don't need to extract anything. I'm just saying QPed 211 is better for browsing through and previewing the sounds.

in half life 1 mapping hints and tips Post #134736
1. Do not fill rooms with crates

2. Do not ph33r the vertex tool

3. Spend as much time as possible on Architecture but don't go mad.

4. Place objects in convincing places (e.g. No Super Egon weapons in an office and random clips of ammo in a corridor.)

5. Make it possible to move through levels without getting stuck on signs sticking out of walls by 1 unit.

I can't think of any more now.

Tosse, if you like trippy maps do a google search and download 'Life's end' for HL1.
