Chapter 6
Death in the Shadows
?Ok,? said Fitz looking into the bustling outpost. ?You get in there and get us a way through.
?Got it.? Said Kaufman. He ran to the top of the ridge and lay flat on his stomach. It was getting late. The bases lighting system had come on, carving up the sky with floodlights. The light dots shivered on the surface of the water. The sky was a mixture of red and purple as the sun slowly descended below the horizon. ?Shepard?s delight.?
From here the base layout was fully visible, like a recognisance map showing every intricate detail and enemy position. A single sentry was marching on the bank of the river, kicking a pebble across the shallow water. Kaufman knew that this was the easiest part of the mission, clearing his own way into the base. It could be accomplished with a single shot. Getting the other guys through would be much harder.
He aimed at the unwary combine, following his path very smoothly through the scope with a crosshair pasted on the side of the victim?s head. He squeezed the trigger, the kickback forcing the bows brace into his shoulder. The bolt smashed into the side of the combine?s mask. The impact forced a small amount of brain matter out onto the dirt bank. Kaufman rose to his feet and pelted down the hill. He reached the bottom, his legs burning and his ankles throbbing.
He froze as he noticed a gunship on the horizon, scanning the riverbanks. His eyes darted back to the bloody corpse on the edge of the river.
?Oh fuck!? He sprinted across the river, water splashing up his back making him shiver. He reached the opposing bank and dragged the corpse across underneath a collapsed pier. He swung the mask around from his back and pressed it to his face. It let out a hiss as the miniature airlocks sealed the mask in place. Just in time, the beam of light from the gunship swept over him like a sheet of light. He gave a casual wave and the gunship moved on. ?Phew. That was too close.?
He climbed a ladder, which led up the side of the structures concrete supports. He climbed over the top and squatted behind some waterlogged crates. He reached round to the crossbow on his back and set it down on the ground behind the crates. Combine soldiers didn?t carry this kind of weaponry. He took out his next weapon of choice. A small screwdriver slightly tarnished with blood. It was small but lethal and it helped keep kills clean and silent.
The next target was only a few feet away. A metro cop was cleaning blood of an APC?s wheel arch. Kaufman couldn?t resist. He was in disguise after all. He stepped out, the screwdriver concealed in the back of his belt.
?What are you doing?? he asked
?What?s it look like.? Said the combine ?I?m cleaning the crap off this APC. My fault it?s like this I suppose.?
?How the hell did you get blood all over it?? Kaufman asked
?Hit a citizen on his way out of the city.? He said. ?I don?t know why they got mad though. It got the job done. Plus it was bloody hilarious the way he just crippled under the wheels.?
Kaufman played along, chuckling as he reached for the screwdriver. He had heard enough. He rammed the thing down into the top of the combine?s skull. The tip punched through the spongy mask with ease and crunched as it entered the brain. The combine?s arms went tense, squeezing the water out of the cloth he was holding, then he went limp. Kaufman whipped the driver back into his belt as he rapped on the side of the APC. The side hatch opened and he stuffed the body inside, sealing it again when he was done.
He rose to his feet and checked the floor for blood. To his satisfaction, apart from the damp cloth, there was no sign of a killing. He moved off into the nearest warehouse and again hid to access his current situation. Two fully armoured soldiers were supervising a cop working on a hunter chopper. He over heard chunks of their conversation.
?Took quite a beating apparently. The other chopper hasn?t been found yet but I heard that Freeman shot it down from his boat.?
?Took down a hunter??
?Yeah, somehow he got his hands on a gauss cannon and blasted a whole platoon of cops, crippled a couple of APC?s destroyed another and took out a chopper.?
?That must be some boat.?
?Not anymore.? sniggered one of the soldiers ?They found it at Eli?s in the harbour. They?ve destroyed the fucker.?
Kaufman moved around to the side of some huge shipping crates and out of the back door. Maybe the squad could have taken on the heavily armed combine but he was alone with a screwdriver as his primary weapon. Destroying the chopper would have slowed the combine for a while though. Also it would have been a great distraction. Then again the side gate just outside came out onto the main canal. The perfect bypass for the squad but searchlights were sweeping it non-stop.
What should he do?
A) Destroy the chopper and shift the squad through without any trouble.
B) Keep it quite and get the squad to storm the main canal path
C) Continue searching for another route through the base.
