Yes, yes it is. It's quite legit and fast.

Rimrook for the longest time I read your name as Rimrock. I think I thought this until I heard it said in a video or something. I was like, noo I liked Rimrockkk. But it eventually settled in. Either way it works.

On hl dm and cs I used to change my name to whetever I thought funny at the time. Then I would get to know players by their names, but they could not recognize me "before steam friends/ steam alone". So I had to come up with something unique. After a good while of thinking I came up with zeeba~G. It doesn't mean anything. I just liked the way it sounded and it was unique.

I changed it to zeeba-G because if you type tilda"~" on twhl in the name field it puts it really high, see for yourself.

Sometimes I change my name to other things depending on how i'm playing "really well or whatever" Some of these names have included; s4M4RaN4FgH4NIsT4N, Thias, Mighty Thias, crashman, sH4RpSho7DolPhiN. Two come from some of my favorite games, megaman2 (nes) and Super Metroid (snes). I used Thias because it sounded really beafy and it was in a deatmatch server for cs with longjump and hook shot included so I felt invincible. Crashman was also suitable for the server as the boss "Crashman" jumps around and throws sticky grenades down at you" in the server i'd hop around, stick to the wall and attack like a maniac".

-I like where you got your name from Urby, really cool. And I like where it is now. I also like yours Dimbark.

-Cstriker, I like yours but perhaps you could come up with an original one? lol.

-Rufee, yours reminds me of the date rape drug "ruffie"...

-I like Habboi, it sounds cool.

-Madcow makes me think of a madman, which is a good thing. Now do something crazy!

-TJB, i'd have considered my initials MEC, Albatros twab rolls off the tongue nicely.

Now if I want a change on cs or whatever, I simply add a little something to my name. I was playing with someone named [name]^coke so I canged mine to [zeeba-G]^h20. If i'm feeling the love I type it zeeba-G <3 etc...

Thanks a lot guys! Yea, it's just two layers of wood. There is a cnc machine at school that could do it in one but it was sort of unnecessary for this.

That projection method sounds nice, you could also print it to scale and glue/ tape it to the wood and cut.

I remember one time I to make a lure out of wood I used a hand held jigsaw upside down that I held with my feet and controlled with my toe while I worked it... The laser is very convenient but semi expensive to use.

I'll post it when painted along with the rest of my costume when I get it done.

Yea I was supposed to start this costume a long time ago but I didn't know if we were going to have our party or not till just the other day. :) Just bought leather arm gaurds and a sword holder. Now finished with the online stuff.

I rem. thinking last year how bad ass it'd be to build a working hook shot. Like a quad hook that cranked into a spring loaded barrel with a handle and wire coiled inside. This would turn some heads at comic con.

Considers bleaching hair...

I am being Link from Zelda this year!

I've ordered a master sword on ebay for 38 bucks that I will sharpen on my dad's grinder. Yes, it must be sharp so I can chop pumpkins and fend off evil! And I'll laser cut a stencil for a shield that I will build quickly out of wood and spray paint.

I will also use real clothes to make my costume as the costumes available online are lame and fake looking. I plan on buying two girl's green blouses "small braw size" ;) . One I will wrap a belt around my waist and over my shoulder to hold the sword and the other I will use to cut out the hat and sew together so that they match material "asks mommy to make hat". Trust me it won't look as tacky as you think. I will also get some white tight pants and a white longsleave under shirt. And I will get a pair of brown boots, but I don't think i'll do gloves.

I'm having a halloween party out at a camp house on 4 acres we own. It's always a blast.

Bruce, the secret requires two players to press two buttons at the same time. One button is in the security room. The other can be seen through the blue lit camera. To get to it go through the duct that connects the office and hall space by the other offices and in the middle of the duct shoot around until a duct breaks and you can fall into the area and unlock the door.

Follow that area to where the locked door is and that is the other button. Once two players push the buttons at the same time the door unlocks and then you get to the coke machine. The rest you can figure out on your own. You have to find your way through the bright green area.

I usually noclip through the locked door since i'm playing by myself.

Yes, there are some maps that cannot afford to ever be lost. Like Carbaseus and EndlRainSH. It's hard to believe that even these maps are dissapearing.

Yes, I always used to say God came to earth and said, hammer 3.4 for half life, what's this now? And then he sat down and made Carbaseus before ascending back to heaven.

Cstriker I can tell you what i've learned so far. Good mappers seem to map with a crazy obsession in detail, geometry, texturing, layout and everything. Some like Kasperg and even Hondo just practically go crazy with random geometry. Things that should be symmetrical are, but not completely. Where one door exists, two exist above it. Geometry bevels out "when it feels like it". And lights go, "wherever the hell they want". Or where they will get a good light flush into the space. Sometimes things line up as expected, but in EndlRainSH certain textures don't which leave you never remembering the detail aspects giving the map a new feel everytime you play it. Unless you look as closely as I am.

People who are random in their mapping map with freedom, mapping fast.

I picked up a Dr.Seuss book last night "oh the thinks you can think", and read it. "just for memory sake". The last page said "Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh the thinks you can think up if only you try" Well I can't deny that this quote does apply!

Thinking about your map as a layout or in plan "above view" is only one perspective. It shows horizontal relationships. But in the 3d world of hammer you must consider your map in all three dimensions. Oh, and do so with a crazy obsession! Frank Lloyd Wright himself said that it is extremely important to draw architecture in 3d. It makes sense to plan maps in plan, elevation, 3d, and even in idea which you can simply write. It is how I designed my dream mod "wrote out a story". Any means of design you can possibly apply, you should.

I'm pretty sure some mappers sort of lay out a plan and sort of consider vertical elements and then begin mapping away designing the geometry as they go, maybe having done some sketches before hand or along the way. In this case I believe Kasperg uses this method like in floatingline. Other mappers who aren't doing it as an exercise and want to put out for example one super fantastic map like K7's Carbaseus or Hondo's EndlsRainSH use the more obsessive method paying every attention to the layout along with detail, geometry and so on.

Just figuring out the layout and how the author probably went about creating the map. I can use the information to help myself in making successful maps.

It gives you a broader sence of perspective on design than only what you have yourself developed.

By diagramming I also mean breaking up the map into different parts and noting how they relate to eachother. It also considers vertical gameplay and pretty much everything.

In some of my old maps I didn't start with a layout but just sort of started mapping away. In more recent maps I designed the layout before beginning. It's fun to figure out what method certain people take.

Looks pretty cool. I personally like the flying city idea better because I feel it can be more artistic. But this one would be interesting.

I saw on gamebanana that you knew what you would do for it. Care to share?

ooo, I think I know what I would do. One night I had a dream that the water tower recently built by my house was actually a space rocket disguise. And the entire field around it had tons of holes with secret doors that opened to allow rockets to shoot out at night when no one could see.

The land is owned by muslims which built a small mosque near it and very rarely use the field for parking.

in How do you rate maps? Post #307356
Yea, I guess it's like the grading system of a,b,c,d,f. It's like a 5 star rating system. The letters are incriments of 2/10 and the +,- are incriments of 1/10.

in How do you rate maps? Post #307346
Edit: summed up version: "Qualify the audience's credibility via skills, personality, understanding, taste etc. and apply it to what you can take out of their criticism."

Yea, cc can sometimes nullify a map's magical powers. But if you seek to better yourself, you should learn to handle it.

In taking cc you usually want to qualify the audience and understand where they are coming from. A random hl player "not mapper". An experienced mapper. Someone with tons of skill, etc. Do they understand what they are talking about.

Then understand that they may not understand reasons you chose to do certain things. If they comment on things you think they don't understand why you did. Explain yourself. It's not being deffensive, it's being realistic. This is when criticizers sometimes think your being deffensive. Try not to sound as such.

Understand the audience's personality, taste, style etc. Understanding everything gives you a better picture as to why they say certain things and which things will become relevant.

The whole time you are qualifying them to understand how credible they are and what not. In the end, everyone's opinion matters but you have to come to some understanding.

Like when Dimbark rated my goldsource map, he wasn't even rating the actual part of the map that mattered because he didn't understand it for some reason "didn't read comp. description or something. I had to qualify his cc to understand that it wasn't relevant or credible at all and I had to explain to him why.

One time, someone said my map was complete garbage and shouldn't get the good rating it did based on the screen shots. When I was younger I didn't know how to handle this but if it happened to me now I would understand that his cc wasn't credible at all because it was only based on the screen shot. Others even called him out on his bs.

The bottom line is cc is very beneficial if handled properly and if you want to better your skills. But don't let it offend you. Simply understanding it by qualifying it will eliminate this. And as always, people will have feelings and rating towards your map whether they post it or not. Telling them not to do so simply says you cannot handle it and that people's opinions don't matter to you.

If you really don't want people to rate or comment I think that's fine. But it simply says you are not willing to learn from others because you don't want to. To me it seems like a lack of self motivation. But, perhaps it's something else.

Pardon that rant sandwich. I need to learn to get my message across faster.

Edit: I usally don't rate a map unless I want to give it 5 stars. Rating under such I feel can be unnmotivational to many and don't want to do that. Instead in such cases, I prefer to comment basically why it isn't a 5 star map pointing out goods and bads.

1 star= 1-20, 2 star= 21=40, 3 star= 41-60, 4 star= 61-80, 5 star= 81-100. I think a 10 star rating system with incriments of 10 would be more appropriate. With 5 star rating, people usually think that 5 stars is "perfect" but realistically this could be close to a B.

in How do you rate maps? Post #307324
Nice description Archie. Oh boy, my last one was 5 star and motm. Platinum star! But I even still see huge room for improvement. It's easy to idealize what is the utmost worst, and that is "nothing" But it is hard to imagine what is the "best". Because it is definitely not "everything".

Yea, within two months one could easily finish a map. Heck in a few days if you were committed enough. I procrastinated de_dust_thunder quite a lot. I think saying what will be the competition only days before it's posted isn't that bad though.

I too lack the motivation to actually start yet. Just saying that I could.

If I ever map a hl dm map again, the player will spawn with multiple weapons and items. The glock is complete garbage. In fact, this level might call to start with gauss. I normaly wouldn't give away ideas like that but I think others could use it for this competition.

It is sort of cliche. But like anything, if you put it in a competition it will push it a little further. Sometimes competitions drive me to map stuff I normaly wouldn't, or wanted to but needed the nudge.

Floating city idea is rainbow fantastic in my eyes, but it would take lots of self motivation to complete succesfully.

I liked the fy idea because it is shorter and less time consuming as I have some other things i'm working on this summer and may do a mini mester. None the less I plan on mapping one anyway so I don't care.

Although more restrictive competitions do force you to be creative in a different way, it's all a matter of self motivation. Truthfully you could be more creative with limitless textures rather than using a given texture set to work with. Restrictions force you to improvise which is creative in itself but imagine if you improvise without restrictions.

I agree doggy!

A giant ship seems a little far fetched, but perhaps the deck of it could be done. It could definitely be done in a better modeling program though. The reason I mentioned fy map is because it is simple and easy to commit to.

And tunnels are basically caves which are pretty cool and interesting to map.

Bruce, I'm trying to be nice but honest. Quit being a scrotum.

Rim, although the leyline idea seems a little weird I think I could get something cool out of it. I actually could imagine that thing existing in a cave for some reason.
