The website states it was created for high school students to want to get into the gaming industry.

What about the 20 to 30 aged people who have media degrees already busting their asses between paychecks and not getting a single break or opportunity? Are they going to hand out opportunities like that when thousands of us have already worked fucking hard to do it every day without any gain? I'm sorry guys, this pisses me off for some reason.

The new Pseudo 8/16-bit era with the indie game boom in the last few years seem to have drove home new philosophies in game development, especially with Minecraft.

Less is more.

A good developer does let the tech limit them, or even feel limited by the tech in the first place. There will always be leaps and bounds in gaming graphics and tech, but a good game will happen first on paper.

EDIT: actually has anyone else played Game Dev Tycoon? Its a little relevant to this as you need to balance your company and team very carefully with the game you create. I think in some way, the game shows us a truth in the abstract.

Make a thin trigger_once in front of the window that targets the glass to break. In the flags, you can disable player and npc touch, but enable everything else. When a grenade hits the trigger, it will appear to break through the window seamlessly.

not really, if you have a good sense of design economy, that wouldn't happen.

Design economy is basically a balance of positive and negative space and balancing detailed and nondetailed areas, surfaces, props, etc. Its hard to explain but is one of the many "senses" a designer develops. It comes naturally over time. Dimbark has experienced some of that already and his work is becoming pleasing to the eye.

I remember that journal, JeffMOD.

I often dream about odd places that may or may not actually exist. Some are quite earthly, others kinda weird and profound. Sometimes about these giant stones temples with a purple-blue shellac stone that resembles something between Mayan and Buddhist temple architecture. Others are as weird as a place I see quite a lot. It a flat world in constant blue twilight with the land covered in endless puddles of about 1 to 4 feet across. Most of the puddles have random objects of cherished and sentimental value inside them. From what I gathered after the second time seeing this place, the puddles age the objects backward. There are definitely a few things I wish I could place here in this world. The dream itself is weird, like something between being a full dream and a lucid dream. Being not random and the same each visit is also very uncharacteristic of a dream.

The A or -1 after the name means nothing. its a varient. The door one could have been an alternate that was used for the glass. I know the big window ones, the alternative versions are for the glass, or if the mapper wants, they could place an additive brush over it and light up the windows without the use of a illumination texture that a more modern engine would use. An additive brush is the primitive equivalent.

This is what I can yank from my memory.

-0texture
-1texture
-2texture

the - comes before the name to randomize between them.

-0buttontexture
-Abuttontexture

-A is the toggled version for switches.

!watertexture

! is for water

~light

Though it doesn't actually do anything the hyphae ~ was just a mark to let someone know the texture emitted light, definable by the .Rad file, or mapname.rad file store in the map folder with the .bsp

+0texture
+1texture
+2texture

An animated texture. Supports up to ten frames with +0 to +9 and plays at about 10 FPS.

TJB that log fire is pretty sweet looking. I always hate how chunky the surrounding stuff in Goldsource always looks. With no shadow beneath it or anything around at a similar resolution, it sticks out.

Purely as suggestions, you could make a texture of the panel or cement slab the log sits upon. Most fireplaces have this anyway. In that texture, you could extend elements of the model into the environment, like dust, char, and parts of the shadowing that it would cause. With the space beneath the cradle, it'd look awesome. If you want to take just one step further, paint the lighted parts on a black texture and flicker an additive overlay on top, like the computer screens in Natural Selection 1.

I did a fireplace in my Link's House map. I replaced the bubble sprite texture with a hot dot and used that as floating embers... I also think I made the stuff beneath the fire a part of the model as well, I can't exactly remember.

Fireplaces are a huge focal point by design and would easily be one in any room that has one. Especially in a dark evening timed setting with not a whole lot of other things.

Whatever you are working on, I hope that this helps you spawn some creative ideas. If its for practice, practice good work.

Town as it is now is one giant place holder. There are so many changes in the story that affect the town and things need to be set up carefully. That's why its blah at the moment.

Seriously though, I will always love Ganondorf's final form in Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That and the fire dragon, or the dark link battle. Haven't seen a boss fight that I experienced yet that compared.
