To all the people who keep changing their avs: don't. Pick one and stick with it at least for a while. The more you change them, the less people recognise you.

Bah, I'll bite the bullet and set up steam tonight, if only to get the screenshots.

Steam (setting up hammer, running maps through steam etc)
Hammer (Viewing models, multiple cameras, and the roll (not working right) bit.)

Can anyone think of anything else different?

Yes, internally, nothing should appear there just for the hell of it, it needs to at least look like it has a purpose, e.g generators, sewerage systems etc. I think internal architecture should reflect this.
Outside areas, the opposite should happen; things that serve a purpose & events should be fitted in around the architecture; all too convienently shaped cliffs etc just look dumb. I don't think there IS a happy medium for making synthetic/organic architectures, its either one or the other.

I suppose if events were made to fit the map, then it would make it look more 'organic' if you will. Captain Ps method would probably suit external parts of maps better, and my way would suit internals better. I should start experimenting with CPs way, see if it helps me finish maps.

I'll maybe drop the killer plasticine penguin, but a surreal horror in the arctic is going ahead (if I can actually finish something for once).

I was thinking about the game 'the thing' and thats the exact same atmosphere i want...but with LESS weapons.

I might map it for opp-force instead of traditional hl, an abandoned military outpost would be good, having parts where you have to run practically blind through a blizzard in parts. I'll have to plan this all out properly, but any suggestions would be helpful. ;)

Which way do people map: entities to suit environment, or build an environment to suit entities? I prefer the latter.

Thats not strictly as random a question as I was expecting. A 'proper' random question is this:

What the hell was the first guy doing when he discovered that milking cows and drinking it was a good idea?

Since HL2 is nigh, and im guessing that hammer and such wont be updated for hl1... is it now time to update the tutorials once and for all?

As hl1 shall diminish, there will probably be less hl1 mappers newbies, and I suppose that the tutorials will be there more for posterity and quick reference.

So, on the eve of hl2 i propose that the tutorials are brought up to speed.

Basically these points need to be addressed:

How to set up the newer hammer so that you can view models
How to set up the hammer with steam.

also while im on the point, the environment tutorial mentions a lot about skyboxing and then simpy says 'dont do it, its rubbish' at the end. Mentioning how you can put patches of sky just outside windows etc would be helpful to beginners.

Anyone else know of anything that needs a good updating? (its probably the last call :( )

You are at home, and you watch a myserious tape...its a modeling clay animation full of bizzarre imagery. Soon after the phone rings. You hear a muffled trumpetting sound...then "oh, and you will die in seven days by the way". You trace the tapes origin back to the North pole and travel there to unravel the mystery before your time is up. This is obviously based a little on a certain cult japanese horror film.

I was thinking of calling it "Pingu"

Spawning monsters wouldnt be that bad if it only happened for a certain ammount of time when the alarm is raised, a la Metal Gear Solid. But as captain P said, clear objectives are imperitive to gameplay. Thats the difference between stealth infiltration and lurking in someones garden at night...which i...dont do....-anyways I reckon a mission briefing would be a good introduction, like Hitman....I didnt realise i had so many stealth games for playstation!

I name them pretty simply, but also by their location eg.

Crab1_corrA
Hgrunt2_power

Pretty boring, but handier for scripted seqs and such.
