Looks good I spose, But I have no idea what it is...
:heartbreak:

Anyway, good job so far, but you need to refine those Photoshop skillz immediately. It should be a fairly easy thing to recreate, considering how horribly blocky the original was. Just make sure you don't 'GoldSrcize' it up by trying to square it all out. r_speeds could be a bitch, though. Best of luck.

...Great, now I'm going to have to one-up you with a Hyrule Field recreation.

The dirty ones don't even really look dirty, just textured and normal. The others look like they were polished.

Also, I doubt you'd notice in-game, but it looks to me like you did some smudging and other effects on the low-res versions (assuming you started with a higher-resolution picture), as an afterthought, so they have blurry patches on them.

Thankies for those new options. Though I'll just keep the avatars as large ones, since using the small ones doesn't seem to have any advantage anymore. Instead of the space being used to compress the height of posts, it's just going unused. Yeah yeah, I know I'm being really picky.

By the way, I thought I noticed something was missing from the front page... and I was right! What happened to the recent and top-rated maps? Did you just decide to dump them altogether?

Well, when you uninstall it, do you make sure it's really all gone by deleting the Counter-Strike folder? I'd try that. You might also try deleting clintregistry.blob, but that may do nothing at all. If all else fails, look to the Steam Support system. They've got just about everything in there.

Okay, this is getting on my nerves. Whenever I hit the back button, it always brings me to the top of the previous page I was on instead of keeping my place on the page. With the option of small-screen TWHL now gone, it's even worse, since you have to find where you were on even longer pages.

Speaking of long lists, have you considered that not everybody wants that many posts on one page? Honestly, I've never been on a forum where the pages were as long as they are right now. I'd really appreciate it if I could select how many posts per page I wanted. Smaller avatars would be nice too, but I guess you can't have everything.

For the third time in the same thread? Dammit, throwing ideas around can be nice sometimes, but honestly you don't have to tell us about every little idea that springs to mind. When you've actually settled on something you want to dedicate your time to, maybe then you should make a thread, but for now this might as well be the shoutbox.

Oh, and another very minor design related thing that's somewhet subjective: On the main entity guide page, where you select between Counter-Strike and Half-Life entities, the text for the entity types is very subtle and hardly noticeable. When you compare it to that meaningless little clickable icon below, it seems completely insubstantial. Shouldn't the type of entity you're selecting be displayed pretty boldly, right there next to the icon instead of being shoved up there in the right hand corner?

Okay, this might not be the time to bring up little features that are missing, but it seems to me like you should be able to view all the threads and posts that certain members have made, presumably somewhere in their profile. An advanced search feature would be fine for this too. I doubt I'm the first person who's brought this up.

Dear Will Wright / Spore designers.

I am getting severly pissed off at the nubmer of the delays of your title , SPORE. Now that I hear it is pushed back to September 2008.
I think you should take this advice :
Produce the PC Version first. Although It has probably undergone alot of beta tests , I am sure it would be ready for release Maysih. You should finish the other ones later.
Take a look at Resident Evil 4.
They first released the Gamecube version , later the PS2 and then the PC.
The good thing was It didn't take long to make since they did everything seperately. I seriously think you should shove all console versions ( BIN THE MOBILE PHONE IDEA. THAT IS JUST STUPID ) in the fridge , and work on the PC Version. Then the Wii and DS , Since they are incredibly similar , and then the PS3 / XBOX 360.
No mobile phones! NO!
I'm sure they'll take that bit of highly professional sounding input seriously. I particularly liked the "BIN THE STUPID MOBILE PHONE IDEA" part.

Truck of Fail isn't funny at all. TWHL needs to get the fuck over it and stop referencing it, and the mods are only perpetuating it by continually posting those lame images every time they close a thread, which seems to be about every day. Yeah, it was real cute the first, and maybe second time you saw that image, but it's just unnecessary at this point. Way to go, guys. Talk about digging your own grave.

Yes, this thread has two pages in the regular (not big-screen) TWHL setup.
Edit?
I deleted the contents of my post because it was relevant to the last post on the first page, which would have been off-topic and thread derailing.

No, because you'd still need a good modern computer to play such complex maps in such a dated engine. The r_speeds would be so far through the roof, you might as well have just bought Half-Life 2 in the first place. And plus, they'd probably realize that some amateur's mod couldn't possibly capture the eloquence and ingenuity of the original game.

Not only that, somebody's already partially done this. They recreated a large part of the citadel, and even though it looked amazing by GoldSrc standards, it looked like crap compared to the Half-Life 2 version. I didn't play it, and I wouldn't play this... mostly because I know yours wouldn't come close to the quality of that map.

I might be able to understand this mod in 2004, when people were still struggling to get their computer up to speed to play Half-Life 2, but come on. It's four years later, and a bone stock low end Dell bought two years ago could play Half-Life 2 just fine.

And for the record, I don't think this is a totally insane idea. I've considered doing it myself, for the challenge and for personal gratification, but I'd never expect anyone else to be thrilled about it. I also came to the realization that things like the Gravity Gun and the vehicles would be so far out of reach that it wouldn't be worth it to create the whole thing all the way through. But you know, if you poured all your energy into remaking a really memorable chapter without the Gravity Gun, that might be sort of fun, and it would showcase what the GoldSrc engine CAN still do.

Well, this sounds to me like you haven't created any spawn points at all. No, it sounds to me like you've created some brush based entities and renamed them "info_player_start" and "info_player_deathmatch". Why else would you be talking about their size? Also, this would fit with your problem about you spawning somewhere completely different. You're probably spawning at the origin of the map, since you have no spawn entities!
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-26 17:49:23 UTC
in Need help with Worldcraft Post #244350
It seems to me like you've done everything right. You simply cannot spawn as a terrorist, when selecting it from the menu? It's normal that you'll only be able to spawn from one of the spawn points for each team when there's only one player, but you're saying that you can only spawn as a CT?

It's also concerning me that you're talking about the size of the spawn points, since you can't resize them at all. All point entities have a set size.

in Need help with Worldcraft Post #244346
You should get Hammer 3.4 and maybe upgrade that to 3.5... Worldcraft is old.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you've "drawn" the entities, either. This seams a bit strange to me, and makes me question how you're going about doing this. Just make one info_player_deathmatch entity and one info_player_start entity, and don't auto-launch the map after you compile. Open up Counter-Strike and launch the map from there.

By the way, this should be in Half-Life Engine Discussion, but don't go making a new thread there please.

Well, I find BSPTwoMap easier to work with if you're just trying to figure out entity setups, which is all you should be doing anyway. Who cares about the integrity of the original brushes? At least you can figure your way around the map, without large brushes overlapping everything and obscuring your view.

The coder of BSPTwoMap intentionally made it so every brush was hollowed. This was done to prevent you from recompiling these maps, since the program created such an accurate representation of the original.

Nauseous nauseous. Like, queezy.
It might be a tumor... : /
Why thank you for that uplifting idea.
Do you need glasses?
Already Got 'em. ;)

I personally think it's attributed to the weird way it renders 3D stuff... it's not the same as Half-Life at all. When you turn, it's like stuff "wraps around" the screen... don't know how to describe it any better. The field of view is different, I guess. I know they had to fix the field of view in Half-Life 2 to stop people from getting sick in the buggy.

I've heard of people getting this same thing from some FPS games, where they can't play them without getting sick. It's got to do with the bobbing motion when you walk. Hideo Kojima has this, which is why he designed all his Metal Gear Solid games with a top-down perspective.
