Am I the only one who fucking hates that fugitive who stalks behind you, waits until you're in combat, then runs up to you and shoves enchanted items in your pants? He spawns, like, 5 times per character, and I've only seen him out of combat 3 times total. One of which was after I died because I saw him in combat.

Please tell me I'm not the only one.

The only way to use mp3 files without custom code that implements fmod would be to replace the default HL soundtrack within the media folder. Both would require a mod format. WAV is your only real option for single maps, sadly.

Try setting the texture alignment to world, that usually fixes bad surface extent errors. Not sure how it got onto a displacement, though. Did you VM it or clip it before turning it into one?

If the model's default hands are a seperate SMD than the RPG, you'll have to move the new hands you want to put on into the same position as the old ones, while keeping them in their own file, I think. If it's the same SMD as the RPG reference, your job is a bit harder; you need to get rid of the old hands (but not the skeleton) import the new hands (but not the skeleton) and rig the new hands to the old skeleton.

Hm. I just might have to upgrade to these once the new compilator is out. (Not much point doing it until then, though. I'm sure it will be before I finish C42) this light_surface entity doesn't replace texturelights, does it? I mean, it seems that it does, but the tools are still compatible with info_texlights, right?

Yeah, the most you'd be able to get with the GECK is a new corpse lying around in the wasteland. Everything else is just too user-unfriendly or unstable. Hell, even making a new character, dead or not, has the possibility to crash the editor.

Rimrook, you've done it again. Love the music, also the dialog for clearing GPS markers. Looking forward to it.

On topic, Rim has valid points as well- Storytelling is very underused in games these days, and it's great that you want to tell stories in your games; we need more people doing that. But as with everything else, practice makes perfect.

And I just realized I was protesting that very valid saying when people were talking to me about my drawing skills. (or lack thereof, in my opinion) I guess they were right after all.
And don't hate us for this wall of feedback - it's an integral part of a proper creative process, and while I can't speak for anyone else, I always look for it when I'm working.

He does have a point, Dimbark. You can't just jump right into something blindly. You have to learn the trade before you can make a masterpiece. Build skills. You can't start out by smithing Skyforge steel. You can use Hammer, you can use Fallout 3's GECK, you can use the Starcraft map editor, but find a tool you want to use, and use it to expand on that game's universe. Do that for a few years, learn how to craft a good plotline and dialog, good levels, good gameplay, then you can make your own universe once you have the skills to do and implement it exceptionally well.

It's a flaregun, based off the one they were going to put in the HL2 Beta. Not sure when I'll get around to finishing it, but hopefully I'll get it fully functional and animated for ingame use, then code it in to a mod. Something like MI's flaregun, but with a proper reload animation instead of the lazy, HL1 mod style lowering, shotgun reload sound, raising reload sequence.

This is a pretty slick system. Goldsource finally has those 'pain skin' NPC decals Valve had to cut from HL1, as well as brilliant smokey explosions, nice impact particles, and even still-decent performance while fighting a spawned battalion of HD grunts with a bunch of grenades involved. Which would be enough rendering to choke vanilla HL to death. Not without its bugs, but all in all, a shiny new rendering system that I'd be more than happy to work with if Hammer 3.x wasn't so clunky now that I've tried source mapping. Any chance of getting this stuff into a custom build of Spirit, or should I start learning C++ and do it myself?

in Decompiled/Decompiling Half-Life 1 Maps? Post #301464
Slackiller's website has a couple decompillers on it that can get the job done, if roughly. Don't expect a perfect decompile, a lot of brushwork will probably be lost or ruined in the process, but the entity setups you want to learn about should remain intact.
There's also a bsp viewer program on that page that might allow you to see the entity setups without decompilling.

Welcome to the community.

Yeah, I've watched Madoka. Thoroughly enjoyed it - it's a great story, and well presented. Episode 3 was important to the plot, and a bit unexpected.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new anime to watch. (Except maybe Dimbark, due to the content of the show containing language and violins. Also violence.)

On topic: Yeah, not much time left. Let's all get it done quickly. If it doesn't work, re-purpose it. No shame in cutting something for later use in another map.

In every open world game, I make a minimum of two characters; The first is me, the second is a female rouge who sneaks around stealing things and killing people for money. In Skyrim, she just punched one of the Battle-borns in the face for the sole purpose of breaking out of the Dragonsreach dungeon. I had some preparations made in advance, namely the unlocking of the prisoner belongings chest, but even so it was ludicrously easy. I had to pick a single novice level lock, then I snuck out through the sewers and waltzed out past a couple of guards.

While typing this post I just remembered I forgot to get my stolen goods out of the evidence chest. I guess I have to go back.

in Custom decals? Post #301175
Yeah, you need to either put them in decals.wad, on a copy of the texture, or in a transparent texture you then put on a func_illusionary (The most hacky method) If you're using higher resolution textures, I'd put it on a copy, but if it's the standard HL ones, you'd probably be better releasing a custom decals.wad.

Use tcl to toggle collision and get past those barriers. (Which I have yet to encounter) Don't blame me if there's not much past them.

Also, 64 ingame days in, killed over 640 people, over 600 animals. Only 300 or so undead. And apparently I murdered 40 people. I guess killing Thalmor counts as murder.

Full Ebony armor, made from scratch. At the Skyforge. All of it at Legendary quality, and enchanted. Add to that a full upgrade to the second Ebony bow I found, and a better fire enchantment than the first one for it, and, voila if I can get a clear shot at something bear-size or smaller at a distance, I can probably kill it pretty quickly using any kind of arrow. And if it gets close, I'm definitely covered as well.

So yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about myself.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the different units in Battlefront-style games supposed to be specialized? Of course balancing sides would be a bit of an issue, but units only having one weapon (plus sidearm) is not a problem, it's the point.
