in Orange Box for Parents Post #238205
A game review for the Orange Box, from a parent's perspective.

It's a new site, but I thought they stole my idea from GamingParents.org.

Yeah, none of the fancy new 3D views work.

But I still made my first Portal map tonight.

It's not worth releasing at this point.

Theoretically, we all like to upgrade every six months and buy a new computer every two years, but we don't have unlimited resources.

I have my computer for three years, and it's still running most games for me.

I'll upgrade when I can no longer run Source games. :P

I think the Orange Box is a great deal.

I had paid a lot more for things that are hugely less entertaining.

I started playing with a handheld Nintendo unit.

It only has one game. It's a game where Pop-Eye has to catch cans of spinach while avoiding being hit by Brutus.

That was 1981.

The first PC game I played was a typing game, if you can consider that a game.

The year was 1985.

The first "real" game I played was Wolfenstein 3D. It was just the demo, but I still had a lot of fun. That was the beginning of my FPS love affair.

Then it was Doom and Doom II. I got into Deus Ex and Unreal II, and the Jedi Knights series. I never finished NOLF2 (and I am still trying today).

Of course, Half-Life and Half-Life 2. But I didn't play HL1 until 2006.

It's every amateur mapper's dream to be contacted by Valve, but it's largely a fantasy.

Get a professional engineering or computer science degree first, then they might consider hiring you.

The bottom line is that you got to do well in school to do the things that you want to do. Good grades give you options.

I can't play it either, but I know the story and the gameplay from reading forums and watching trailers.

My Radeon 9800 Pro is too old.

I'll wait for Team Fortress 2 and Portal, which won't disappoint.

Nope, it was as real as can be.

I didn't use the flash in that picture, but the sun was already getting low. I guess it was the residual dusk light that made the sign reflective.

I don't see a monitor or a tower on the right, just a keyboard.
My wife doesn't have a desktop. She only uses a laptop.
Also, I see your wife got the upper hand as far as chairs go.
Her chair was a birthday present from my brother. She used to work from home, but now she hardly ever comes down to the home office anymore.

The whole room became my gaming room.

Girlfriend?

I didn't start dating until I was in medical school (25 years old or so).

I dated two girls, and I proposed to the third one (on our second date).

Now I have a son.

I know people who has dated hundreds of girls...but they're still single.

I don't know whether there's a way for Half-Life mapping, but for HL2DM mapping, you can specify (via a flag of the entity) whether it's a Citadel supercharger or a Kleiner Lab regular charger.

Recently, being bored to death, I've done a google search for each of my MP maps.
I do that all the time.

When I searched for my sp_justice (single-player), I found that gamers from all over the world had played and reviewed it. There were Italian sites that feature the map, as well as Japanese reviews.

It's interesting to see the HL2 HUD displayed in Japanese characters:
