in BSPViewer making me sick Post #243832
So, every once in a while I'll download a map I don't really want to launch Half-Life to see, so I'll open it up in BSPViewer to check it out. And then, after a couple minutes of roaming around, I'll inevitably start to feel nauseous. This is especially noticeable when I have the viewport stretched out really wide (which it is by default, since I have a widescreen monitor), but it really could happen any time at all.

Now obviously, there's nothing anyone could do about this, I was just wondering if anybody else experienced this strange occurrence?

in block light with doors question Post #243384
Turning it opaque should work if you're just trying to block the light... that's what it's for. I'm thinking you don't have ZHLT if it's not doing anything.

You know, if you really were intent on this, you could try triggering a light_spot to come on and shine through the door when it's opened, but otherwise I can't think of any way. And that'd probably look like complete shit, to be honest.

in Storytelling in mods Post #243178
I was reading the PC Gamer I just got today, and found this really interesting article. Clicky.

I think it's a great read for any modder, although more specifically those who work on single player mods. Any thoughts on what approach to storytelling works best for you, and which you like best? Of course, we probably all like Half-Life's no-cutscenes approach, but this article sort of made me wonder, what does it take to make an immersive game that also has a deep, interesting, and thought-provoking story? The Metal Gear Solid series did their cutscenes extraordinarily well, but with their overwhelming length they managed to pull you away from the game like nothing else, and you felt like the whole purpose of playing the game was to be rewarded with yet another cutscene. On the other hand, you might say the Half-Life series comes very close to perfection in storytelling, but you'd be hard pressed to say that the detail of the character's interactions rivals that of most well made cutscenes. Not only is the main character's involvement here seriously lacking, but it makes it hard for the developer to have detailed and meaningful interactions when you don't even know where the player will be looking.

Anyway, that was a bit long-winded, but I just wondered what people liked and didn't like in regards to this, and what in their opinion the best option would be, especially for modders.

Yeah, most computers can be set to automatically shut down after a specific component reaches a certain temperature, as a safety mechanism. I can do that in my BIOS anyway. Maybe that setting got messed up on your laptop somehow, and now it's shutting off automatically every time it comes on.

Still, it's a really strange problem. How'd you go about pinpointing that it only comes on at certain temperatures?

That's kind of a shoddy way of doing things, since you could interrupt Barney's path at any time and the whole sequence would screw up. Fortunately, scripted_sequences have a property that allows you to trigger another entity after it's finished its sequence. Use this to trigger a multi_manager that opens your door and, a second later, triggers the other scripted_sequence for Barney to walk off to. Quite simple, really.

What you're calling "viruses" are actually tracking cookies, which are harmless. They may show up in a virus scan, but they're just deleted every time you clean out your browser's cache.
I once formated my HDD, reinstalled XP and installed all the latest updates, and 30 minutes later I had shortcuts to porn sites on my desktop.
I didn't visit any other website than the Windows Update site.
I'd have to agree with ZombieLoffe. How in the world did you manage to do that? Some adware must have somehow been transferred over from your previous install, otherwise that doesn't make sense at all.

Seems like I've critiqued these same pictures before...

But anyway, looks fairly good except for the skybox that doesn't match the environment, the stretched tree textures, and the hay bails only sitting on two vertices, which looks really messed up. Also, I know I'm really nitpicking by saying this, but you don't usually see bails of hay sitting around farmhouses like that...they're usually out in fields.

Oh, so you aren't ditching XP, you just want to learn another OS? That makes things easier, since I'm assuming you don't want to mod or game on it or anything. Or am I misunderstanding you?

Anyway, nothing except Windows works like Windows, it's just the way it is. You don't use the same hard drive system and installation methods and everything, so I guess you kind of have to get use to that. You really need to be an experimental kind of person, and not be afraid to try (or research) anything. because that's the only way you'll ever learn another OS. Picking an inferior one because it's easier would defeat the whole purpose of this.

I recommend you reinstall Windows XP, and try not to handicap yourself again. If you know how to use it, it's quite good.

But if you're really insistent on jumping on the "LOL MICROSOFT SUCKS CUZ IT BROKE AND ITS DEFINITELY NOT MY FAULT" bandwagon, all you can really do is find a Linux distribution that suits you and hope for the best. Sometimes emulation works, sometimes it doesn't, but there's no way in hell you're going to be able to run anything natively.

I use Slackware on my laptop, and despite everybody saying that it's hellishly hard to use, it's actually pretty easy for anyone that has the slightest bit of curiosity about how it works, and is willing to research it. I personally would stay far, far away from anything that attempts to recreate Windows XP's feel, as those OS's tend to be far less configurable, and are more aimed at the kind of person who gets on the computer once a day to check their email and browse the internet for 30 minutes.

Ag3nt-X, I've been looking into this a lot too, and I ran across some programs that'll extract graphics from ROM files, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting any of it to work. It's mostly a bunch of old programs you have to run through DOS, and I'm really not proficient in that area at all.

He probably just remade them... or else downloaded the ROM and extracted the textures somehow. There's probably an N64 ROM editor off in some dark corner of the interwebs. To actually extract stuff from the cartridges though, you'd probably need something along the lines of this:
