Interesting topic in the comments of Dimbark's latest map regarding the value given to TWHL's mysterious five stars.

Personally I think it's a bad idea to be subjective with rating. If it's someone's first map and it's good for a first map then I think rating it, say, 4 stars kinda undermines the rating system, because a genuinely great map which also gets 4 stars will lose its value.

Here's what I consider the stars to mean - do you agree/disagree? How do you rate? Do you think it should be on a subjective per-map basis where you take into consideration the mapper's relative experience, or do you think it should be objective and a rating should be consistent throughout the vault?

The Grey.

Watched it based on Crollo's recommendation.

I knew nothing about it going in. I had never watched a trailer or even heard of it except seeing posters for it outside cinemas when it was released.
It's an odd thing to experience. It has some genuinely upsetting moments that are quite uncomfortable to watch and then it ruins it by turning into a by-the-numbers completely predictable thriller for the entire middle act.

The dialogue is atrocious and the frankly excellent actors are wasted on it.

Also the ending is hugely disappointing, but it couldn't have ended any other way without being cheesy bullshit.

I guess I don't know where I stand with this. The director was very brave, genuinely, to include many of the events of this story. I get the feeling it was a meddling studio pushing for it to be more accessible that resulted in the garbage middle section.

It's was pushed back to June 2013 about 4 months ago. The news is that the latter third is getting a complete rewrite - a decision only made within the last month.

Luckily the Glasgow scenes are all during the opening act, so I should still be rockin' it and getting my shit pushed in by zombies.

Heh, nobody really came close.

Correct answer was:

Vis: 9 secs
Rad: 54 mins

Yes, truly if you want defined shadows and bounce lighting over huge expanses, you need to be prepared for Rad to take a shit all over you.

QFT. It makes them feel fucking awesome.

I think the fact you hang around 10 weird perverts reflects more poorly on yourself than sex.

Note: By early age I am talking 15-20, the age range myself and most of my friends became sexually active.

Obv still WIP.

The person who guesses closest to the actual compile times for VIS and RAD for this map will get access to the beta. My PC specs are in my profile, and I am using Vluzacn's tools with full VIS and a bounce3 & -extra rad.

Present like:
VIS: 1 sec
RAD: 1 sec

Nothing wrong with sex if you're responsible about it. 16 is the legal age to have intercourse in the UK and I think that's a pretty good system.

People are stupid about sex and get their partners pregnant and they cheat and spread STIs, but for the most part sex is just really good fun and I laugh with pity at people daft enough to remain abstinent.

I loved Splinter Cell Conviction.

New God of War 3 looks like one long, unskippable scripted sequence. The player had literally 0 impact on any aspect of it.

Last of Us looks pretty good. Very nice interaction, AI and graphics, but again so much was scripted.

Watch Dogs has potential, but the combat looks horrific.

Edit:

These presenters between keynotes on the youtube live feed are literally the worst people I have ever seen. What a fucking horrible representation of a gamer girl and a gamer guy. What's particularly painful is that he still has this glimmer of hope in his eye that he might fuck her after the show because he's the only person in the world who hasn't immediately clocked that she's a massive dyke.

- Finally CODBLOPS2 got a really long gameplay demo. The last bit showed the player flying a fighter jet. Are they trying to compete with Battlefield?
I don't see why they bother. MW3 proved that the masses will still buy CoD games at insane prices despite the series not evolving since CoD2 and despite Battlefield being clearly the far better game. They could just make BLOPS2 identical to the first one and it will still make them richer than Saudi oil tycoons.

Max Payne 3.

30 Gig might be excessive, but I am having so much fun with this. The shooting is the best I've ever experienced - the fluid animation and physics engine is remarkable and makes every firefight hugely exciting.
It's also amazing that every part of it is rendered in-engine, from the cinematics to the main menu. Even the graphic novel elements are all done in-engine, with a very neat 3D effect with novel captions floating behind characters.
Some of the best post-processing I've ever seen in real-time. It also runs incredibly smoothly. Far better optimised than GTAIV or LA Noire were.

No surprises for me here. A few things to point out, though:
  • BF3 has probably overtaken BC2 in hours played.
  • CS 1.6 doesn't show up until way down at 22.2h. I don't think this is accurate, personally. Used to play it every day when I was a nipper.
  • Company of Heroes probably has more hours logged than DoW, but I only recently got it on Steam.
  • Saints Row: The Third has a playtime of 18.5 hours. This is the amount of time it took me to complete the game, and I consider that to be a perfect duration for a game like it.
  • CoD: MW2 has 4.7 hours logged. This is the amount of time it took me to complete the game and play a few rounds of multiplayer. This is an unacceptable duration for a game like it and the fact that it was released at £45 is literally painful. What's worse is that millions of people still bought it at release price.
Concerningly, here are the stats for my mum's Steam account:

Bruce isn't saying Goldsource shouldn't be used - he's saying there's no need to go to these extents to optimise it, and he's right. This whole thing is purely academic because it has no actual impact on the player's experience.
