in TWHL Halo party! Post #281343
The PC is, and always will be the best gaming platform.
Because I love shit-stirring, let's knock this up a notch. Not only are you wrong, you are sounding like a complete douchebag.
- Mouse and Keyboard is perfect for shooters, not those rubber fuck sticks on console controls. Of course you have the option to plug in any controllers you like if the need arises.
I agree. But FPS is not the only genre. Third person shooters play well on dual analogs, but consoles allow for other control systems to be used, such as the wave of motion control coming in, the touch screen of the DS, gun controllers for games like Time Crisis, etc. PC may allow you to plug in controllers, but that in no way means that there'll be games that use them.
- PC Gamers have at least some degree of intelligence, having to install / patch a game rather than just putting in a disc and playing from the off.
This is the worst one. You sould like an elitist prick. You're basically saying: "We don't let those stupid dumbass console gamers into our PC gamer club - only smart people allowed! Patches act as a gateway to eliminate people of lower intelligence."

In fact, the fact that you raise this point is actually a point AGAINST PC games - you have the inconvience, annoyance, and difficulty of patches and compatibility. Thankfully Steam has given us the convience of autopatching, and consoles have done this too.
- PC's can be upgraded easily.
They can also NOT be upgraded. This means that PC games have to have much higher compatibility than console games. This adds to development and testing time and cost.

(... skipping a few ...)
- NO HALO.
PC: No Uncharted. No Alan Wake. Heavy Rain, Gears of War, God of War, Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda. The list goes on. No matter what games you like, there'll be many console exclusives that you'll enjoy. Many console players would say that "No Halo" is a big flaw in your "argument".

Listen. PC is also my favourite game platform. But this does not mean that it is superior to any other platform. Stop acting like an elitist fuck and learn to accept that your opinion isn't the one truth.

Otherwise, listen to Elof (and ignore that I didn't).

I trust that Penguinboy is actively working around the clock to fix these issues at once, and finally include the long wanted Blink and Marquee tags.
I don't know, they seem like [l]pretty silly features[/l] if you ask me.

Both potatis and Strider have valid points. Perhaps you should change the requirement to maps with an average rating of 4 or more in the TWHL vault?

I don't see how your website gets any advantage if it's just a bunch of TWHL members spamming pointless crap to rack up a post count of 25. All of TWHL is aware of your website already, as potatis said.

Additionally, your site doesn't seem to be related to maps and mods. In fact, as far as I'm aware, it doesn't seem to be related to anything besides you trying to be witty on youtube. Maybe it would make more sense to contribute to TWHL instead of spamming advertisements? We are a modding community, after all. I'd even be willing to let the videos be embedded somewhere on the site if they aren't full of advertisements.

I've seen that unlimited detail thing a few times now, I'll believe it when I actually see it working. I have high hopes, but until I get a live demo that dosen't look like shit, I'm doubtful. There's doubts around how it would work with physics, shaders, and the like.

Having a different kind of compiler will not help you. See my answer above, attempting to use a different compiler will just cause tons of compiler errors. Do not waste your time attempting to use a different IDE, either. It wont work. VS6 is ancient anyway, you can grab it from most places and it's under 300mb, if I recall.

You need Visual Studio 6, service pack 5. Nothing else, as far as I know, will compile the HL SDK.

The custom-coded solution allows the forums to be fully integrated easily with the rest of the site and database. PHPBB brings a lot of baggage with it, meaning that it's very difficult to integrate into an existing database, and back to the rest of the site. It's possible, but it's a lot of effort. PHPBB is very big and bloated, and it's unnecessary for a site such as TWHL, anyway.

Even if a post is edited, you still have a placeholder that someone has said something. Helps when people are replying to stuff and discourages people from saying stupid stuff because you can't delete it. Deleted posts disrupt the conversation flow. I agree that it would help for double posts, but they are easy to prevent, and an admin can take care of them anyway. Anyway, back on topic. Put it in a suggestion thread if you really want it.

Most definitely, Jeff.

And yeah, it seemed as if most of the 'lopers folks hadn't heard of PQL. I thought the set of 3 were rather well known, but it must just be among Goldsource people or something.

in PQL/Issues/ReIssues Sequel forming up! Post #280315
Wow, just had a look on Interlopers to see if the source version was being advertised there - it was. There is some SERIOUS negativity in the Source community.

A good point was made about how the Source modding community sucks ass - it's because every mod team aims for perfection in all ways, and can't handle it.

Projects like PQL, Issues, etc. don't exist in the Source community, and that's because of the 'perfection' factor. It's also the most likely reason the Source scene blows. Nothing ever gets finished because they try to polish it too hard and rub the paint off. Maybe projects like PQL Source will change things, maybe they won't.

The difference between the Goldsource and Source communities is like night and day. TWHL is primarily a Goldsource community (one of the only ones left?) and a bunch of skilled regulars are all over it. On 'lopers, a Source community, the 'skilled regulars' are sticking their noses up at it, saying that it's not organised enough, or that any mod without custom code is crap, lack of a continuing theme and organisation means that the mod will fail, etc etc.

Not trying to have a go at 'lopers here, but it's an extremely interesting situation. In the past I haven't really liked the fact that TWHL isn't moving over to Source, but if Source communities are like that, I don't want us to change. Well, not too much, anyway.

Sorry for the little rant. TLDR: Long live the Goldsource spirit!

That aside, I'm cheering for both the GS and Source versions of this mod.

Don't upload screenshots as PNG either. PNG is good for images where there is lots of the same colour, such as images of plain text. It doesn't work well when you have lots of different colours like in a game screenshot or a photo. Compress to jpeg with 90% quality and you will hardly notice the difference, except the filesize will be 10 times smaller. Use IrfanView to convert them if you don't have a proper image program.

I think you may be the one who doesn't get it. The reason Windows is 'counter-productive' is because it is backwards compatible. Microsoft need to (and have needed to for at least 5 years now) drop the entire Windows kernel and write it from scratch. Apple did it, and now they have a much better product. Microsoft need to do the same.

Stealing, no. Ripping off, probably.

QDOS is just another name for 86-DOS, which Microsoft paid $75,000 for. Microsoft then started licensing the software out - IBM was one of the companies. The original owners felt ripped off and sued for (and received) a million bucks.

Check Wikipedia, people!

@hotdog: Microsoft bought all rights to 86-DOS for $75,000 in 1981. What exactly was stolen?

@kd: "Anti-Bill Gates"? Nobody cares. Come back when you have an argument that holds water.

I don't especially like Gates but people who believe crap like that really irk me. He didn't get rich by stealing software, he did it by being intelligent and having a bit of luck.

2. Quit Steam on both machines
3. Copy old steamapps directory into new Steam install
4. Start Steam back up

Logging in for the first time might take a while as it does a full directory scan to see what files are present. You might need to re-enter your serial key for some 3rd party games, just right click the game and choose 'View serial keys'. No registry junk needed.

in Specs Opinion Post #279600
It's always been my opinion that gaming + laptop = bad.

You either have to pay tons for a beefy laptop, or deal with having to tweak the settings of each game until it's just playable (at a low resolution with settings down, etc) and even then it's laggy.

Even if you do spend the money to get a huge laptop, in six months time it'll get obsolete and you're stuck with something you can't upgrade. I know people who go through one or two laptops every two years - that's ridiculous. My desktop has lasted 3 years and it has at least another 3 in it - and a lot more depending on how I want to choose my upgrade path.

That said, if you don't want to play games, but just run a few 3D apps, a cheaper laptop should be able to deal with them. I agree about getting a proper video card, though.

Also I keep reading the topic of this thread as 'Specs Onion'. Dunno why.

If ALL of Source has been recreated for Mac, it could be a very good thing. According to the latest L4D blog post, Mac users will be able to create maps too, meaning that Hammer might have been rewritten. Perhaps the Windows mappers will get a rewritten, cross-platform version of Hammer sometime soon? It would explain the lack of Hammer updates recently.

Good way for Valve to get people replaying older games! I bet that Adam Foster was an integral part of this Portal ARG, he did a few for his Minerva mod and they were rather similar. Also, some of the stuff uncovered in the game linked back to him directly.
