in Internet Explorer's faults Post #173425
I'm sorry, but I WON'T support a browser that does not conform to Internet standards. These standards are set by the W3C (the creators of the Web, essentially). Why do you think pages that render fine in IE look totally fucked in Opera or FireFox? Because the page doesn't conform to the standards and as such, Opera and FF read it as faulty code (as they should).
Indeed, and nor will TWHL3. I trust for the sake of Luke, Habboi and BL that IE7 can actually render stuff properly. I'm not hopeful, though.

PS: for pepper, notably, who's still claiming that IE uses less resources than FF or Opera:

That's with Opera and Firefox containing five heavy-content pages apiece, whilst IE has only blank pages.

Give it up.

No, it's because IE is already loaded when you start the PC up, and that's mandatory. I'm sure there's a Firefox agent which will do the same if you so request.

PS: Habboi: Very odd. That's quite a discrepancy. I'm about 100% sure that Firefox doesn't actually slow your Internet connection, but it's perculiar. Try a more respected speed test.

Habboi, any browser will import IE's favourites.

Yes, Firefox is slow to start up. So? Opera's much quicker, but even if it wasn't, I wouldn't care. Why would you close your browser when you're in the middle of browsing stuff on the Web?

I'm not going to argue much on the features front, because that's a case of what you do and whether you mind fighting with software. I personally want something that does exactly what I tell it to.

1. That's because people code for IE, to the huge disadvantage of people unable to use it (the blind, people on 'phones [growing market]).

2. You don't understand security.

3. That's just nonsense, unless you mean start-up time, or you'd broken FF.

4. Fair enough. That's why I rated it as of the lowest importance.

in Internet Explorer's faults Post #173333
Primarily for the benefit of BrattyLord and Habboi, I have compiled this list of what I find are generally considered the most serious faults of IE6 and below; these are technical faults alone, not ideological ones (nothing like "abusing market advantage", etc.).

1. It cannot render webpages properly.

Internet Explorer fails to draw webpages according to what are now seven year old CSS specifications. It cannot render alpha-channel PNG images. That standard is seven years old too. If you think that failing to draw webpages isn't a complete failure on the part of a web browser, go away. Computing circles don't wait seven years for updates.

2. It is poorly-secured.

This is more debatable than the above, but people generally find that IE is less secure. Don't bother saying "I don't go on dodgy websites", because eventually, you'll always end up somewhere nasty, even completely unintentionally.

A lot of people seem to think it's no big deal to find scores of trojans on their PC every month. I am certainly not one of them, and I really don't understand the thinking behind this. IE was, years ago, tightly integrated into Windows for legal reasons, at the cost of security.

3. Slow.

On Windows, Internet Explorer is much slower than Opera at drawing most kinds of pages (source). This is a browser with the advantage of being build into the OS, too. Very poor. Firefox and Opera both support HTTP pipelining, which decreases the time taken to actually retrieve whatever is to be rendered from the remote server.

4. Lack of features.

This is, obviously, far less serious than the others. You wouldn't see me here around anywhere near as much if I had to use IE, though. I read every single new post every time I log in. I open twenty or thirty thread pages at once. If I were doing this in IE, I'd have to shift-click each topic link, then tab back to the parent window, and repeat ad luneum. I'd then have scores of pages of varying sizes and positions all over my desktop, and wouldn't be able to find my other applications.

In Opera, Firefox, etc., there are tabs (true child windows in Opera), saving my taskbar organisation. I can zim through, middle-clicking on all the topics marked as new, then right-click and roll up to the next window and get a load more up. I really ought to record a video of a visit to TWHL sometime to show you how massively more efficent it is.

All it takes is a little effort and exploration. What have you got to lose? If I didn't have my trusty Opera, well, I'd have more of a life, I suppose :). I couldn't bear the Web.

Windows users
Opera
Firefox

Other OSs
You're using something better anyway.

I'm really glad that you considered my opinions, as you say, and that you duly considered them. I can honestly say that I've become more, er, right-wing (but not less liberal) as a result of listening to others' opinions. Notably P. J. O'Rourke. What a guy. Anyway.
I was so nerdy and so confidently being so that I was actually popular because of that. That was a strange phenomenon in high school. By going entirely against what everyone thought was cool, I became a trend in itself.
Heh, heh, I remember finding the same thing around the middle of secondary school, with someone saying something like "hey, don't take the piss out of Alex, he's hard" <chuckles>. It was intended in a complimentary manner. It was really great how mature people got at the end of secondary school (in my sets), with the cool people and the geeky people all getting along pretty well in-school. A real laugh.
I think that could be the root of those who are stuck in lower socio-economic levels. They have no confidence, and they have low expectation of themselves and their offpsrings. So each generation basically prepares itself for failure right from the start. It's a cycle of misery that's extremely difficult to break.
Indeed. It's sad, and a reason why free education is an absolute necessity. Apparently New Labour feels otherwise, though</englishrant>.

PS: aren't Bush and Kerry related? I remember Jahzel saying so, but I don't know whether he was serious/right.

Traditionally, each sentence is regarded as having a subject, an object and a verb, even if one of these is implied. See grammar for more details. The objects that modify the noun phrase collectively form the predicate of a sentence. An incomplete sentence is called a sentence fragment.
Clever people, remarkably, believe in progress. It's strange, that.
I think you'll find that those are proper sentences. Don't criticise my English, bitch :P.
Conjugating...
Don't use words if you don't know what they mean.
I don't see anything here about religions
Sorry, people killing themselves and others in the name of magic pixies/elves/gods forced upon them by religious bodies from birth doesn't qualify as being about religion?
Statistically, nearly everyone who recieves a welfare check votes Democrat. Getting a welfare check means you do not work.
Finally, something sensible! Of course they do. There's really very little point in discussing it.
You do not understand the political parties in this country, and I really don't want to explain them to you. If there is anything refering to those parties, just let it be and don't try to interprete it, because you do not understand it.
I do, really, I just like teasing people who abuse the words "liberal" and "democrat" :). I suppose it's the party's fault for abusing such a word.

On to an economic discussion!

Premises

1. Capitalism is intended to encourage people to aid others in exchange for aid themselves via exchange of money, whether this be work put into building houses, producing paper, cooking food, etc.

2. The more you help others, the more you should receive.

These represent, I feel, the basis of a capitalist society.

Now, with your harsh anti-welfare opinions, can we therefore conclude that you feel that all people are equally able to assist others, and that all appropriate actions are rewarded fairly in payment? If not, you seem to be under the impression that the weak should be excluded and punished.

If you are, then you're clearly saying that you think all people are of equal ability, which is clearly not true. Let's generalise a bit and say that there are a load of people who are only suited to help others by means of, I don't know, cooking. They are unable to offer any other useful services to people at the time, lacking either the innate ability or training to do anything else.

Now, with an abundance of such workers, it can be expected that they will not all be able to find work.

Should they be assisted by other members of society who are already able to work as something other than chefs, and who are fairly well-off, or should they be left penniless on the streets?

Yes, it's abused, because a lot of people are lazy and irresponsible. Surely it's better to support whatever significant fraction of all claimants are geniune than abandon them all on the grounds that some supportees just "don't feel like working"?

Haha, lunatic conspiracy. Clever people, remarkably, believe in progress. It's strange, that.
Then when deadly hurricanes hit us, and one of our big cities literally sinks, the world turns its head, and giggles to the other little pansy sitting next to him.
Even AFGHANISTAN offered you aid. How... UNSPEAKABLY... incompetent is your government that you cannot evacuate or police a relatively tiny area of your own country without assistance? The United States of America, which you yourself just called a superpower. It's absolutely appauling. George Bush & Co. failed dreadfully, leading to however many deaths. Quite incredible.
