My first name was obviously 'Sniper', which is 90% of all gamers first name. I only needed a name due to playing my first online game CS.

I then decided that 'Sniper' was usually associated with try-hard scumbags so, I moved onto 'Custom' (custom maps) because of my sudden massive interest in mapping having discovered Worldcraft.

After that, I eventually figured the name was all too generic. So I moved onto Moabathon/Moabinkez which nobody in the world is going to have duplicated or thought of beforehand. The name(s) being short for Moab because of my interest in MOBA games at the time; double meaning too. Moab being a anagram for MOBA, and the popular term for killing someone instantly on a MOBA game is nuking...Mother Of All Bombs, similar subject area right? Anyway, people started nick-naming me Moaby and it just kind of stuck.

It can be done in hammer using the .fgd for TFC. The pick-ups like the flag or quad mode allowed you to add glows to the character that had well... picked them up. The ability to do it is quite obviously there in the engine however, I have never seen it in any other game apart from TFC. As Stojke said, the admin tool 'AMX' took use of this and made it possible in HL and CS.

Wasn't there some tool called 'Sprite' (I think) that does it? Not entirely sure what it is or what it is actually called for that matter but, it enhanced the features available in hammer for HL.

If you re-created it yourself and are not going to sell it (model, game or mod) then you have absolutely no worries at all. Take Black-Mesa:Source as an example. That said, it is usually frowned upon to steal ideas or looks but it's not illegal in this case.

I'm also a F.E.A.R. fan. It looks pretty much spot on with the F.E.A.R. 1 Alma, despite the small time you see her, so good job.

I can't quite decided which sort of atmosphere I prefer for my map. I posted 2 of these a few pages back but I'll put them up again for comparison purposes. A lot of you ruled out the first one as being a little bland in lighting but again, comparison.

Thanks for the input you two. I think I'll stick to 3 areas for each map, giving myself this limit should help keep the loading of the actual .vmf to below a minute; and of course keep the compile times to a minimum.

Anyone got any ideas on how to effectively execute a CO-OP map change?

Currently I am build a map and it's proving to be rather large. I was wondering how large I can actually go before I need to be worrying about splitting into parts or sections. In the past I have just estimated and gone "yeah, this seems like a nice spot to break off" and flown with it.

Here's what I am dealing with: I am creating a multi-player Source map in EP2 that will be played on Garry's Mod. It is within the horror genre which cries for massive amounts of entity setups. It is currently split into 3 areas, forest, town, wasteland and a half built metro (which is being built so not actually included to be the 4th area yet).

I have split the areas and optimized using hint brushes and area portals, not to mention huge amounts of 'Nodraw' on areas you can't see and therefore, the frame-rate is not an issue at all. In hammer I'm getting a number of issues like taking 30 seconds to load the map, and the map actually failing to load so I'm having to copy my entire .vmf data to the converted .vmx.

I know the entity limit in Source is ~4000 according to Valve Developer. However the question is, how many is optimal for this kind of map or series of maps? At what point should I be splitting the map into separate sections? And how would I go about transitioning a multi-player Co-op map?

I liked it, a nice take on the original. I wasn't so happy about the combat being incredibly easy and then dying to silly things like the Source ladders...I guess that's not their problem.

(TBH, the "enjoy your $15" was a compliment to your work, but seeing as you took it the wrong way, i'll swing with it).

On the far top left hand corner you can see a large hotel in the making and currently in developer textures; that hotel is only the basic outline and is 1696 objects, which is just silly because the map is only 3731 objects so far.

Question: Can I use Italy's layout and give it a new theme entirely not from CS at all, like futuristic style, because it states an "original theme" and to make a new map using it. For example, I would be using Italy's layout and similar architecture but in a neo-italy kind of way. Is this acceptable?

I was mistaken in my horrible choice of words. I'll lie and say I mean't it to be 'I must, personally, make the layout similar to the original' to not look like a complete clot. ;)

With the rules as they are, aren't we going to end up with a load of random maps using CS .wads, sounds and models? That is if no one remakes the orignal maps with new textures.

I think more specific rules need to be identified with new competitions, I got marked down on the last competition due to gameplay...the other maps didn't even have gameplay. And, it was all about texturing...the top map got first due to geometry when I spent all my time placing my textures perfectly as I could manage. Besides, third place got third and only used about 10 of the 40 tetxures, so much for "find a use for all the textures and we might be impressed".[/sore loser]

I am so with you there Kurosaki Ichigo! I have found myself standing outside the Solitude Palace looking down the long stretch of coblestone path. The birds flying by the windmill on left and the open view of Skyrim itself to the right. All whilst listening to that and not wanting to move an inch! Such a beautifully crafted game.

If you stand at point A then B will not be drawn.
If you stand at point B then A will not be drawn.
C is the HINT brush (one HINT texture with the rest as SKIP).
D is the void.

It's a badly drawn paint example but hopefully you'll get it. Try optimising in a different way if that's not working for you.

BEVEL disables clipping on that face doesn't it? Like when you compile a map using default tools and the sky becomes a liquid. NULL is still 'solid' and you can walk on it.

I could be completely wrong there, but that's what I always gathered.
