Yep!
Is everyone okay with Penguinboys time frame?
Yep!
is 256x256 pretty much the GldSrc standard these days?
Yep!
Is this any different?
Yep! It has some bolts nailed into it at random. It just breaks up the monotony a bit. I'm not sure I actually like that texture much, anyway. It looked cooler in my head.

Dragos, I'm really confused as to why you're being so negative about this.

Even with 20 textures + variations, that's still a very limited palette, and there's only so much you can do with those.
Having too defined a theme will remove creativity, and giving people more self-regulation with how they use the textures will give some really unique and interesting results.

Like I said, though, I'm only going to make a few more and then I'll send them to pengy and strider, and they can decide amongst themselves if they want to use them.

I've done all the textures with a grid, as well, so the details such as the dark borders at the bottom of the first wall textures in that preview image line up properly with the Hammer grid. This means you can make detailed brushwork that will fit the textures perfectly.

in Water is boring Post #299181
It's always going to just be an illusion, and it's a lot easier to pull off if the player never actually swims in the water.

There are a few key things you'll need to sell the effect:
1. Animated refraction material behind the glass. This will distort things, but not to the extent you would get from a regular water material (which won't render at the bottom or sides anyway).

2. Bubbles! Don't underestimate this trick - it can really, really sell the effect! Try Source2007's particle editor, or if you're not feeling adventurous enough, just use sprites.

3. Blue fog falloff. Above ground you fade to grey fog. Under water, it should fade to blue or brown, depending on how you want it to look.

4. Typical underwater props. Does this tunnel run along the sea floor Rapture-style? Add plant-life and rust!

5. Caustics. Not totally necessary and a bitch to pull off properly, but if you can get good looking caustics then your effect will be flawless.

6. Sound. Big, slow, booming metal groans & that flat reverb you only get when submerged in water.

7. Leaks. When all else fails, convince the player that they're genuinely under water by having some leaking into the tunnel. Even just a few drops leaking in at a seam in the tunnel could help sell it.

All these effects only work from the perspective of being in a dry tunnel running through the water. If the player has to swim at some point, you'll probably have to trigger them all to turn off and on when the player leaves and enters the tunnel respectively.

Good luck!

I'm happy to expand on the themes. 'Tis why I was asking for suggestions. You guys should contribute as well, but I think the competition would be more meaningful if the textures are 100% original content, rather than taking textures from existing packs.

Also, Natural Selection textures would be no good because they're too low-res for Source mappers.

A smaller texture pack than the preview I just showed would be totally unworkable. Keep in mind that without the variations, there are only 14 textures there.
When I was designing them, I was thinking of how they could all be used in one theme, and I think they're perfectly suited.
I was going to add around 10 more, including doors, windows & lights.

There should be a rule that every texture must be used, to add to the challenge.

Since I've spent today doing nothing thanks to a birthday hangover, I figured I'd start working on a texture pack for this, since nobody else seems to be.
All original content, all tile correctly, all 1024px.

Suggestions of what else to include?
So far we have:

3 variations of grey metal walls.
3 variations of cyan metal walls.
2 variations of rugged wood walls.
6 variations of white concrete walls.
3 variations of metal trusses.
2 variations of concrete pillars.
2 variations of tiled concrete floors.
1 mossy ground.
1 metal floor with indents.
3 variations of dark carbon fibre.
1 light blue generic metal.
2 variations of grates.
2 variations of concrete floors.
2 variations of odd sized bricks.
1 Glasgow street criss-cross brick floor.

Edit:
I forgot about doors and lights for Goldsource mappers. Don't worry about them, I'll make some. Other suggestions still needed, though.

Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce the most exciting playable game still in development since Minecraft.

Kerbal Space Program.

Build your own space vehicle in a Spore-like building environment, then take on a surprisingly competent physics engine and see if you can get into space and even enter a stable orbit.

There's an incredible amount of content yet to come including missions and hundreds more items to craft into spaceships, but even in its current pre-alpha state it's incredibly fun.

It's free to play at the moment, or you can pre-order it for the low low price of $7US and receive all future updates ala minecraft.

Here's one I'm quite proud of - the HMS Hunteh and its maiden voyage.

Finished construction.

I agree with most of what you said. Stylistically, in a time where gritty brown and grey were the only options, they boldly said "fuck off, we're going to be visually interesting" and they succeeded wonderfully... To the extent that everything which uses solid colours since its release is compared to it.

As for the gameplay, I gotta admit that the novelty of the parkour wore off pretty quickly. By the later levels it felt like the last quarter of Bioshock in terms of mindlessly getting from A to B without much purpose or drive.

I think it was a good game, but the combat is so awkwardly worked into it that it ruins the experience somewhat.

Mirror's Edge 2 was axed by EA in February, but recent reports from E3 suggest that it has been revived using the same engine as BF3. Should be interesting seeing what the devs do with such scale.

Just watched that whole video. It's certainly quite convincing in many ways and I'm glad they addressed specific criticisms, for example those said by Notch.

The guy's a total twat, though. Like the sort of person I imagine Crollo being in real life; making really awkward jokes and having a very elitist air about him.

Also, seriously, the only time they'll ever let someone in to their company to have a peek, and it's a single-camera one-man operation with the interview skills of a stick of celery?

This is really old.
it is a scam.

They made a voxel renderer, probably based on sparse voxel octrees. That’s cool and all, but.. To quote the video, the island in the video is one km^2. Let’s assume a modest island height of just eight meters, and we end up with 0.008 km^3. At 64 atoms per cubic millimeter (four per millimeter), that is a total of 512 000 000 000 000 000 atoms. If each voxel is made up of one byte of data, that is a total of 512 petabytes of information, or about 170 000 three-terrabyte harddrives full of information. In reality, you will need way more than just one byte of data per voxel to do colors and lighting, and the island is probably way taller than just eight meters, so that estimate is very optimistic.

...

It’s a very pretty and very impressive piece of technology, but they’re carefully avoiding to mention any of the drawbacks, and they’re pretending like what they’re doing is something new and impressive. In reality, it’s been done several times before.

4gb of fast RAM is not a lack of it, especially for Goldsource.

Define "PC just dies".
If you mean it's just going unresponsive, that's normal and is due to the processor being entirely occupied by the compile. Leave your PC alone until it's finished.

I've just been trying out the photo album management side of things. It's really, really nice.
It's actually so intuitive that I spent a while looking for a more non-intuitive way to do things because I'm used to the brick wall that is facebook. For example, the simple act of changing an album name requires you to click an edit button on facebook and then save the changes on a seperate page. In Google+, you just highlight the album name and change it like a word document. Very smooth.
