I don't think anyone's been making HL2 models for free-use, really - Most are for mod teams and there are few mods released - If you need some new models, consider extracting some of the CS:S ones and their respecive materials.

Well, you should be able to play HL2SP and other single-player games in offline mode - but you need online mode on to create a server - it will need to connect to the SteamAuth servers and the VAC system.

It uses air_nodes instead, for future reference.

As for the suit, place it right above the spawn point - so it falls onto Gordo instead of being stuck in teh same spot as him.

This utility will let you open the GCF files Steam stores game data in, major_righteous. (located in /steamapps) Make sure you have Steam closed (right-click - exit in teh tray) and open source sounds (I think) .gcf - This has the HL2 soundfiles. You can get an idea of how they're structured by looking at this (ie, foldernames.) Then, you can just recreate this structure with new folders in steamappshalf-life 2hl2sound.

Unfortunately, HL2 uses a different method with the materials system.

vTEX/XWAD will create files in the forms of vtf and vmt. the vtf is the texture itself, in a modified targa format. the vmt file is a simple text file that defines all attribues of the texture - what lighting method it will use (VertexLitGeneric or Lightmapped Generic, for models and world respectively) and any additional info, like what sort of shader it should have, or to render a certain portion of the texture invisible for alpha-textures.

Probably, if it has to function the same way - ie if you have an airboat replacement, use the airboat script, and if it's a buggy/jeep replacement, use a jeep script.

Check Snarkpit's tutorial.

You use PS or whatever, IrfanView or something to change it to TGA, and vTEX/XWAD.

Make a move_rope for the rope start, then name it r1. Have a keyframe_rope for the end point and name it r2. Have the next keyframe on the move_rope be r2. Set your slack and enjoy.

You can name them anything other than r1/2 if you prefer, and string up multiple keyframe_ropes to make a chain. Just don't delete a move_rope targeting keyframes.

Yeah, the overlays must be used....

Experiment with the FX as well - Making flickering or glowing ones is very cool. I did that on co_ethereal on one of the monitors and it was nifteh.

You can set the grid to measure inches and inches + feet. Map - Units - then select your preferred measurement size. This will change your unit measurement to what you select. It doesn't resize the grid though.

Unfortunately, no metric D:

For most HL2 applications, refer to the standard measurements VALVe used:

A basic interior wall should be 128 units high.

Doors should be 56x112 with frame and 48x108 for the door itself. The knob should be 44 units off the ground and 8 units in from the side.

Railings should be 32 units high.

Buttons should be 52 units off the ground.

Valves should usually be 44 units off the ground.

Ladders should be 24 units wide.

Barrels are 32 units high.

Garry's Mod has the same stuff as HL2 in terms of entities and such - The new weapons are automatically given with GM, as well as all the functions necessary.

Try running DS with -game ns or whatever the NS folder is called, same for Sven if you want a Sven server. You can change the map by typing changelevel x in the console, make sure to have a copy of the map in the DS folder though. (in steamapps.)

A router is a device that sends little packets of data around a network. It's usually connected to two networks - A LAN/WAN and ISP, most commonly.

What game do you want to create a server for? HL1DM?

You can always run a Dedicated Server and +connect with your own IP.
