By my count, there are 16 entries. With 1 day, 21 hours left, do you think we can make it 20?

Who else plans to submit entries? Soup Miner? Rimrook? Strider? Daubster? Anyone else?

GET THOSE ENTRIES IN! (ok i'll shut up now)

quailcreek: i'm still studying your entry do see how you built those structures. It would be nice if you showed more hammer views to see how you did that.

the textures look a bit stretched in places, though i love how you seamlessly blended them with the rest of the brushes; it's hard to tell where the the brushwork ends and the flat texture detail begins.

Nice work! =)

Zeeba: i love the vertical structure of your map, which kinda reminds me of your dream compo end map, though i questions some of your texture choices, namely that black glass texture.

commieman: That's AWESOME.. so minimalistic..

eizenhazenshagonwaggon: Thanks for your comments zeeba and very nice entry yourself! (maybe don't let photobucket resize your images so i can zoom in and see the goodness better ;))

door: Thank-you and a very interesting entry by you! Also i agree about the floor brush; i actually rounded and enlarged the floor brush in my last edit, but i never compiled it yet.

We keep getting entries like this we may have one of our most popular compos to date? who else is joining?!

quailcreek: Thank-you that means a lot sir. =)

Freshed: Thanks and i agree with you 1000%. I always skimp on sky and textures because of laziness. (i assume when you say atmosphere you mean sky) I also tend to focus on objects and individual structures rather than the environment as a whole. Hey if you can think of any more tips/suggestions, please hit me up on steam(captain0terror@gmail.com) and/or pm!

Last night when i posted that, i was on my 6th car bomb(and my second double "rocket ship", (whatever that is)), and had just hard-booted into werewolf mode. I think it might be a good idea to leave my phone at home so i can't update from the bar...

Please consider all conspiracy-related posts retracted and sincerely apologized for. I hope i didn't post anywhere else last night...

Meanwhile, a teaser:

I guess this will be my FINAL entry, since i don't think i'll have the time to tweak it any more before the deadline. I have LOADS of other ideas for this compo, but i'll save them for 30-brushes: part II.

)

I was inspired to by White Devil's Mapcore entry to employ these type of beveled cubes for my entry, though i expanded on it by "extruding" the beveled sides that amazingly, compiled in hammer 3.x.

I would like to tweak the lighting more, but it takes my computer 7 hours for RAD compile due to the the crazy solids i used in this(every brush besides the orgin and the 4 comprising the small arch contain 42 faces). I originally had everything scaled down to .25, but hammer REALLY didn't like that, and compiled pretty much to infinity. =)

The white dev texture is by Rimrook.

You could add spawns and weapons to make a playable DM, but i didn't do that.

Note: I tried to port this to source, but hammer 4 doesn't like these strange solids and refuses to render them in most cases(It will render the roof brush but not the pillars or other fence pieces fsr). I suspect it has something to do with HLFix that hammer 3.x can tolerate these strange solids.

i know using zhlt light flags will do weird stuff like that, so for that reason i never use them. (if you have used them try shutting them off)

Are there any errors in the compile log or by hitting alt-p? Without looking at it i really don't know what else to suggest. If you want, post a link and i'll play with it.

yeah zeeba, i was gonna delete my orgin/trigger/null/sky brushes too for the screenshot, since they don't count towards the limit, and otherwise, "show map info" will count them as brushes. Or you can just run a breakdown like you did..

Kraken: jeah you're right, but i did already post a WIP of my first try at least!=) PLUS, at the very final stages of my map i am running into some technical difficulties with the dreaded "AllocBlock:full" error and that wretched "MaxLeafFaces" to boot, cuz i got too much faces in my map (the average solid has 40 or so faces, lol).

It actually compiles fine with a light_environment as the sole light source, but if i try loading any of my texlights, it shits out the "MaxLeafFaces" error, or, after a grueling compile time, i get that "Alloc:Block" error. My choices are either to make the map less complex, upscale my textures to a retarded level, or eliminate my texlights; none of which i want.

'(

BTW, i tried porting to source thinking it could easlily handle my special architecture, but source won't even compile my crazy shapes on VVIS-only compile! (hammer 3.x does this easily, probably because of HLFix)

Don't get me wrong though: in almost every respect Hammer 4 is superior, most undoubtedly in terms of hard limits, BUT, there still a very few things that Hammer 3.x does better apparently. =)

edit x1000: i had a hell of a time with that last sentence, and i'm sure it is probably STILL incorrect/bad grammar. I think i need to go to bed now.

Jeez louise! =)

That some impressive stuff man.. I love the first 3(obviouslsy jesus, what is that, an amusement park?!) and the 4th that looks like the cross-section of a handgrenade.

The crazy, fucked-up castle with all the weird spikes in stuff looked REALLY intriguing...

I also like the thing after the screen with the trees/mushrooms that kinda looks like a mario map, and a few after that look astonishing! I love how you put parts of brushwork on the side (presumably to be reused later?).. I do the exact-same. =)

Impressive shit man! I'll try to get some things together and post them up sometime soon.

I will love the day when i can forget about Microsoft altogether, and simply fastboot into my linux OS. I'm saying, completely not use windows anymore.

When Linux started becoming popular, i figured/hoped that eventually, you could do this without sacrificing compatibility and losing the use of any of your programs. Essentially using Linux as your primary workstation OS.

Are we there yet? Are we kinda there yet, or is this never gonna happen?

The only thing i use linux for currently is GPartEd(Gnome partition Editor), which i boot up from USB. I love how fast it and clean it is. On my todo list is to dual boot in some flavor of Linux and start learning it, but to date, i haven't done shit. ='(

Would appreciate anyones thoughts comments on the subject1

i like how mapcore did it too, having separate threads for each category of level-making, and then tallying the scores. (i'm not saying we should do that, just thought it was neat)

That looks pretty sexy, 'specially for cs 1.6! The only visual distraction for me is the texturing on the rocky terrain. (Try scaling it up a little or try a new texture?)

How did you get that source-looking fire and explosions in 1.6? They look VERY nice.

last pic you can fix the lighting really easy, by using a light spot, or 3 or four of them pointing down(to approximate the rectangular shape of the fixture, and so as not to shine on the ceiling like that.). I would normally say use texture lighting for this, but since you're using that model fixture it makes it tricky.

That's true.

One entry from SP by finger really impressed me and looked like a full-size level from the screens, though i think it's use of displacements makes it a bit unfair. Also, a few of the mapcore entries(lunaran and reno's, and vilham's to an extent) really impressed me, as they somehow built an entire playable level, and with 10-less brushes than we're using. :o

I'm try to redo mine in the spirit of one of the aforementioned examples if i get some extra time.

Thanks Daub that's a fine compliment coming from you! =)

Zeeba: ya, i tried REALLY HARD to map an area rather than a glorified prop, but i'm finding it really difficult with the brush limit..

Atom: Yeah you're right the superstructure texture could be aligned better. Remeber though too, without being able to clip the object into more pieces(which would create too many excess brushes), finding a texture or textures to make it look right is going to be difficult imo.

Would still like to add:
-smoke sprites to simulate fueling process
-retexturing(though i really dig Rim's dev texture!)
-new sky
-night version with some snazzy uplighting
-decals/sprites to accent things

Skals: Sky brushes don't count towards the limit. Any invisible brushes, shouldn't count either. afaik, sprites and all point entities (besides models) are fair game.

"Severe brushwork" will really help you for this compo, e.g., one of the mapcore entry's brushes i've been studying (the smooth cubes one) has a single solid with something like 30+ faces!? I can't even begin to imagine how he did that! and I thought I was fancy with brushwork!

can be difficult cuz in order to line up vertices to grid points at 1-unit grid, you have to zoom down all way to be able to see that small.

MUCH faster/easier imo to increase the grid size if you are blocking out larger things..
