in Display Rooted Post #191892
Seeing as i've had numerous problems associated with my video card, this comes as no surprise, but my display is now completely rooted.

My PC boots up with multi-coloured lines everywhere, and the view is all distorted/fragmented. As i'm writing this i can barely see what i'm typing, so excuse any spelling errors please.

It started when i restarted my PC, first it froze at the black startup screen when it was trying to detect IDE drives or something like that. So i turned it off, rebooted and the same thing happened, i've checked the wires and made sure everything that i think is supposed to be plugged in, is plugged in. With the exception of on group of wires, which i am somewhat sure is NOT supposed to be plugged in, that all meet in a small, black rectangle, that looks like it can be plugged into something. But as i said, i'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be plugged in, and has always hung loose among the many other wires like that.

My card is a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 bit, and i just want to know if anyone's had these problems themselfs, or knows if buggy visuals are related to something NOT being plugged in right. It's gotta be my video card, as what i see is happening to both my monitors, and also judging by the previous--although minor--problems i've had with my video card - problems that have been related to once loose wiring giving an error, and numerous software/driver errors that were hard to fix. I'm afraid this card is just falling apart on me, and i can't get another one, not for a very long time.

Again, if anyone knows what could be causing this, or if they've had the same type of problem, please let me know, i need this PC operational. I've cleaned out quite a bit of dust, and had a fairly good look at the wiring, it all seems ok, apart from that one line of cables i mentioned. I checked where they run from, it leads back to mainboard and has the two bunches of wires leading from two points, one labelled AUX-IN that goes leads to DVD drive, and one labelled CD-IN (the one that isn't plugged into anything). The loose line of wires has one black cable, one red cable and one white cable if that helps. And as i said they all meet in very small, flat black rectangle with holes on the opposite side. I'm not sure if i've ever seen in plugged into anything (it can be obviously), or whether it's always hung loose.

If i can, i'll post a picture of it sooner or later.

I'm going to boot down now, the visuals are starting to scare me. I'll check on my father's laptop tomorrow. Thanks in advance, ANY kind of help is appreciated.

Fortress Forever looks too much like HL2, it uses too many of the original HL2 textures and props. Team Fortress 2 is going to rock, it's got a unique visual style only certain games have ever been able to pull off, the animations all look top notch (and very comical), and Valve are bound to stick some nifty little features in. GO TF2.

I've done about half of mine (the boarding side of the rail), still got alot of displacment and brushwork to do for the other side, aswell as the skybox. Damn HDR and prop errors are slowing it down a bit, but it's still going steadily. :)

in Parallax mapping Post #189174
No, i'm not talking about the motion blurring effects. Parallax mapping simulates 3D shapes, but it has to distort the texture to do so, as you move and view the texture from different angles the texture moves with you and distorts. It's very ugly.

EDIT: I know what i'm talking about, i've read all about it. It's the main reason alot of people don't like using the parallax shader on common textures.

2nd EDIT: It's not only the poor Parallax mapping that turns me off the games visuals, it's also the way every friggin thing is shiny.. even DESERT SAND! It's like polished metal, they went absolutely overboard on shader effects and it looks horrible.

The textures are shithouse, as is the entire game really.

That screeny doesn't show the weird effects that happen when you move (obviously), it looks just plain silly in-game.

Anyway, have you played PDZ on 360? They use it soooo perfectly. Brick walls look like each brick is seperate. I must use it in source!
Are you kidding me? PDZ is the perfect example of how not to use it. That game is so damn ugly it puts you right off playing it. Each texture that has Parallax mapping in that game has horrible 'scrolling texture' effects when you look at them, PDZ is truley a hideous looking game.

Parallax mapping creates an ugly effect in my opinion, it can look ok though if used on one plane without any 90 degree turns. I read about a few mods that implemented this effect back into Source mods.. i couldn't find any tutorials on how to do it myself.

Strider: Yeah, but you don't scale every single one down to at least half its size, do you? That kind of thing can have a major hit on performance, and usually isn't even noticed.
Yes quite so, i tend to leave wall textures and floor textures at 1, scale down trims and smaller details to 0.5 or 0.75, and scale up mountain-faces or terrain to 1.25 or somewhere around that.

I scale some textures down to 0.5 all the time.

Anywho, Rimrook is actually better, because it's harder to balance nice visuals and nice performance, this guys maps are generally unplayable to most people as opposed to Rimrooks, and most of ours. :glad:
