looks nice joe tho that floor texture is ghastly; there are plenty of good HL textures, but that aint one of em.... (i think that texture is meant to be scaled down for bathroom tile, but i'm not sure)

The last shot is intriguing i love dark maps! =)

Rimrook: I CAN'T WAIT for your l4d2 campaign to come out. your map will be the reason i will finally buy l4d2. +)

i have to say i'm leaning toward xsi, but i will surely give blender a try as well, especially since you say it's easy. :badass:

I've dicked around a little with max 7 and 9, and i have to say i don't find it all that intuitive nor stable (at least on my machine), but i plan on reinstalling it on my new rig anyway to check it out again.

skals: i think that looks great. to whomever said it was blocky, take a look around, a lot of real-life stuff is blocky. =)

I followed the instructions from the VDC and it worked fine. here is my .vmf if you want to check out the propper_options entiy values i used.

My DOS favourites list at Abandonia (i own most of these but roughly 1/3 i added as favourites just to remind me to download/play them sometime..)

i used to save all my boxes, all the documentation, and even any plastic wrapping inside! =) now i just throw away all the packaging and throw the discs in a cd folder, or for the the most part these days i just buy on steam.

My experience with modern games is very limited, since i don't have much time. My fav games to play currently:
DoD (original online, Call of Duty DoD server 24/7 ava)
L4D (tho it's pretty dead since L4D2)
The Battlegrounds I and II (tho it's really hard to find anyone playing it)
The Specialists (with bots actually SO MUCH FUN)
Portal
Star wars Battlefront I and II (singleplayer but i still love it..)
Starcraft Origianl and New beta (both SP against comps)
Any Terminator game (mostly T3 rise of the machines (1st person shooter) Online flash-based stuff that is quite fun)

I don't own any console systems, or i should say, the most modern one i own is super nintendo. =)

yay! so i made my first Propper model:

Left is world model and right is prop physics model exported by Propper.

I intentionally tried to make something that would show errors as a world model in the game, but they look almost identical to me besides the lighting (which is a bit of a dissapointment). Maybe i'll to build something more complex and see if it looks substantially better as a model..

If someone has some crazy brush geometry they'd like to volunteer (especially if it shows visible errors in-game), i'd love to try exporting it using propper to see how it will show up in-game as a model instead. PM me or link to file in here if you're interested! =)

If this were goldsource, i would understand the advantages of this by the reduction in wpoly, and a few other small things, but what advantages will this give me for source? Maybe if the lighting was lower you'd see smoothing errors in the world-brushed one and not in the model?

hi! i recently decided to start modeling for source...

According to this VDC article, there are many programs to choose from. I have max, milkshape, blender, and i'm downloading softimage mod tool right now, but i'm still curious to know what you think would be the best program to use; specifically, i want to build props and don't plan on animating much or at all.

the switchable texlight is more round like a pointlight--like you said--, and the normal texlight is brighter and more diffuse or less rounded.

even if it has it's sp only... it is stoopidly ridiculous to wait over 10 hours for a map to compile, i don't care what's in it. and if he ever has to edit for any reason he'll have to wait another 10+ hours to edit.

I would NEVER wait that long for a map to compile for, especially for a coop project. I would disqualify it outright, spit it back to the author to edit, or edit it myself, but man, you are asking a lot of someone to expect them to compile that shit.

tet just do fast vis seriously, there is no reason to full vis an abandoned map that won't have any gameplay imo...

just in-case you forgot here are some possible optimization tips to help:
-scale up textures to 2.00 or more in areas it won't be noticed
-make any crazy brushwork--this includes anything cylindrical--func_illusionary or put a clip brush through it.
-run fast vis :badass:

Agrees with rimrook: the best you could ever hope to achieve from this project imo would as a goof or a stunt... It's one thing if you already did this and were showing it off, you'd probably get some positive reception, but to try recruiting for such a thing is just ridiculous.

Upon further thought map a book would be really cool too, i guess trapt converted me. it would be very interesting just to see the type of books people would choose to map.. =)

i have TONS of ideas also for map-a-dream, all of which involve a TON of entity work, but we'll see. i haven't decided if i'll go source or goldsource yet either, but i'm leaning toward source...

Chea good point... judging will be highly subjective with no solid guidelines... Maybe you could try to quantify dreamy-ness on how surreal or strange it is, tho that obviously doesn't cover every type of dream..

Just build a xen map and your map qualifies for Map-A-Dream...

hi i'm fairly new to source and i'm curious how i should go about lighting a fairly big inside area (inside of a large supermarket) properly. I'm currently using a shit-ton of light_spots, but they seem to either be too bright or too dim.

When they are too dim i just get small cones of light on the floor that show no other ambient light at all(brightness of 500), and when i boost it up(around 3000) i just get a super-unnaturally-bright room with weird hdr effects...

should i use normal lighting in conjunction with light_spots?

Ah, i miss lighting in goldsource, so much simpler...

I used trigger_changetargets to change the destination of a teleport to something null(just a random name that doesn't apply to any entity) to "disable" it, and that worked for me.

you can take a look at the rooms intro rmfs where the player can travel back and forth from one place to another multiple times: i had to disable one teleport and favor another, sitting on the exact same spot, kinda making them togglable, though that might be a bit confusing to understand.

There is also a teleport/trigger_changetarget example map in the vault by Elon Yariv, which i used to help me with the teleporting in rooms.

If you can't get it to work and feel like uploading the .rmf, i'll take a look at it for you.

This is a super-annoying glitch with complicated world geometry in source. I've never been able to find a fix for it, which is really depressing, since complicated brushwork is my favourite part of mapping...

wow that's really cool i've been doing fades wrong for my whole mapping career then! (i set rendermode to texture and renderamount really low like 5-15)

Setting it to additive/255 (don't know if the renderamount is important) renders the black part of the fade automatically transparent! I guess you can teach an old mapper new tricks!

The game was perfect in it's original state imo, that's why they didn't change much gameplay-wise imo.

frankly, they could have modified the original version of the game with a bigger gameplay area, the ability to select more units, and a couple other small things whilst keeping it sprite-based, and i'd have been happy with just that! (rather than taking literally a million years to make a 3d version of the game..)

The only other thing i'd really like to see added is Xel'nega race to the game (all the new weaponry they added to protoss should be for the xel'nega race, and the protoss units should have been kept more traditional imo)

Your thoughts?

My initial thoughts:

I love the terran design, style, units, and music. I don't care for some of the style and unit liberties they've taken with zerg and protoss.

Zooming. I like it but i wish you could zoom out more. no matter what resolution you play at, everthing is the same size. I guess this is to keep it fair for matches involving someone who has a great resolutoin capability vs. someone who does not.

Graphics and Video requirements. Graphics on the Ultra/high settings and at max resolution (1900x1200) are amazing but not so much on lower settings. My machine will run with everything maxed but not without melting my video card... =(

Playing even in my preferred resolution (1680x1050) causes my gpu temp to skyrocket 100+ degrees C, even with everything set to medium. (Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS 512MB) I've NEVER seen my gpu temp this high ever. Obviously, this is completely unnacceptable, and i'm gonna try upgrading my gfx drivers to see if it makes any difference. 'Till then i play 1400x900/medium settings, and my temps stay below 77 degrees C.

Updating. downloading new patches is gay since it's deadly slow, and no matter what ports i open as well what potentially-conflicting programs i turn off, i get the "your shit appears to be behind a firewall" message. I mean, it still updates it's just really slow.

Playing offline. Pretty cool i can play offline with AI using a cracked offline launcher. I use StarCraft II - Offline Launcher v2.3.1.
