Whoa, BJ, that's a beast of a tutorial! I never read that because the revised version was posted after I'd read them all.

It could do with reformatting a little :. Some of the paragraphs are on the long side.

It looks to me like you're using parts of two different models, but it might just be a modelling naming convention of which I'm unaware. Ask pepper, he's an HL modeller.

Looks like a good buy to me, and the price seems good compared to our parts. You might want to see if anyone else offers an opinion, of course.

I just don't get the point of emulating a LAN network over the internet.
Hey, it's interesting. I plan to use it to help my nan with her PC. I hardly want to leave a VNC server publicly accessible on a single Windows PC, eh?

It is also bound to be slower, since all the traffic is encrypted!

Well, my friend with an XT does get noticably better framerates, but it's not a massive difference in general, I don't believe. If you want to run at high resolutions with anti-aliasing, a 256MB XT would probably be good. Just get the best you can afford.

No. You certainly can, if you wish. Mid-range Venice (the sub-version) Athlon64s are meant to overclock excellently.

AMD desktop processors are generally 'faster' gaming-wise than Intel desktop processors of the same clock speed. I think the super-turbo-mega high-end dual-core Athlon X2s only run at about 2.8GHz.

Don't skimp on the power supply! You can't really skimp on any central components. That's my advice.

If you get a different motherboard, make sure that it has an AGP graphics port and not a PCI-E one.

I don't mean the currency conversion. Our PC parts are about 50% more expensive than America's.

Right, this lot comes to about $1,300 AUS, excluding tax. It's approximate since, as I've said, the part price may vary. Probably a good guideline though.

Currency conversions by xe.com.

So about ?650. From looking at your present PC's specs, you're buying a whole PC with that lot. I'll do you up a rough price list for a balanced PC in a bit and will edit this post. I don't know how much Aussie PC parts are different in price to ours.
