Inner Workings

Either make a huge machine, or shrink the player so that they can fit inside a smaller machine. The competition is to make the inner workings of some sort of machine. Whether it be from something as simple as a clock, to a great nuclear reactor.

Vote for this idea!
I don't know, that sounds like a bit more than just brushwork.

82... MB's... Damn, this must be a big map, I can't wait to try it.

Edit: I checked it out, and I personally didn't think it was all that great. The lighting was rather plain, and the layout, as far as I could tell without noclipping, was just a box with redundant streets and buildings on it.

There was no outstanding architecture in any part of the map, and it had a very plain, un-atmospheric feeling to it, which was only covered up a little by the overuse of fog. The interior of the police station was equally boring, as there was a severe lack of detail.

By the way, I didn't try the DotD version, so that still has the possibility of being a lot better.

I personally don't see what the big deal about this map is. I didn't think it was extremely vast, and it just didn't do a very good job of convincing me I was in a city...

I could just have been expecting too much out of it, but I wasn't very impressed at all.

in remaking a map? Post #188798
I assume you're looking for WinBSP, but there's no way to just decompile a map and add a few things into it, then recompile. The brushwork is all messed up when you decompile a map, as it carves the whole map out of a big block. You would have to reconstruct all the brushwork to be able to recompile correctly.

Here's some new screens of the map. They aren't side-by-side comparisons, because a little too much has changed, but you should get a good enough idea of the improvement.

My skylights are a little bit different than most people seem to think, so I'm not sure these tips here would work as well with this.

in Top 10 Video Game Weapons! Post #188361
I think there should have been something in there from the Ratchet & Clank games, there were just so many awesome guns in there.

Sure, the gravity gun is pretty cool, but it doesn't really have any feel to it, and that's one of the most important things... For me anyway. In some games, the weakest weapons can be the ones that I like the best, just because they had a nice sound to them, and I liked the weapon model!

It's kind of pointless though, this is really all about opinion. Pretty much every game out there has a great gun in it that might deserve to be on this list. It's what you like that counts, not what some video says, and certainly not what some nameless guy on the internet thinks.

Yeah, I thought chop would do that too, but I didn't notice any difference when I looked at the r_speeds. It might effect it a little bit, but I'm pretty good at keeping my r_speeds down anyway.

Wow, I actually got the whole problem all cleared up with just one little parameter! I just turned -chop to 32, and now it looks almost perfect.

Thanks for all the extra little tips given here, I'll be sure to make use of them in the map. Hopefully It'll be one of my few that gets released!

Here's the map with a "darker and less monotonous texture". You're right, it does completely destroy the problems I'm having... But it also destroys the feeling of the room. I want it to feel simple and modern, not old and run down, and because of this, I have to keep the texture I was using before.

I still have a few things to try before I give up on this. :)

There's really no better way to say it, my lighting looks like absolute crap.

I'm working in this wide open, fairly boxy room with two skylights, and some other windows next to a door on the wall. All the windows have a SKY brush right outside them, because there's no outside area yet.

The problem is that the lighting is really blotchy and spotty looking. You'll just have to look at this picture to see what I mean, as it's kind of hard to describe.

http://img280.imageshack.us/img280/6783/destucco00003ms.jpg

I've tried raising and lowering the texture scale, placing little light entities around certain areas to even it out, and trying different colored textures that would hide it better, but nothing is working very well. Is this just something I'm going to have to live with? Is there some ZHLT setting that'll even out the lighting for me?

At this point, anything would be great help.

Ice tea would have to be my favorite beverage, but I'm not sure about food... It couldn't be anything that gets crud all over your hands (Cheezits, highly seasoned Doritos, potato chips, brains, etc.), so things like toasty-toes and unsalted peanuts work well.
