yes. Using some plugins, you can export and import model information to and from 3DS Max. You can Model for both HL1 and HL2 using some plugins that are available on the net.

If you can't find them, i'll link them for you. I do alot of modelling for HL in 3DS Max.

my idea for the compo, which of course was nearly impossible, was gonna be where a tentacle monster, base and all, erupts through the ground and destroys everything, some grunts, some scientists, etc. Then it gets blown up and guts fly everywhere. I would model the tentacle monster from scratch and and line up an animation, then you would watch the whole thing via cinematic camera.

like i said. too much work, too little time. Maybe in turnstile :o

yes and no. Not so much the vertex manip, but the textureing method. take a look at the wad if you want and you'll notice that most of it is all diced up into sections. It was once one large terrain map. I see that the most difficult part of terrain (for me) was the texturing because you get so many angles and not enough textures to blend them together. With the terrain set up, the textures are not a worry.

The next part is actually manipulating the terrain. (Requires level 59 patience) I grabbed every individual point and pulled on them until i was satisfied. Then i mirrored it to the top to form the ceiling and pulled on it more. I spent most of my time in the development of the terrain.

No new method, just a modified one. Either way, this allows me to build more landscape and scenery without too much worry. Of course i won't make anything this harsh on the r_speeds ever again, but it's a good example of the use. Also, the anatomy of a single player level is different, so i can have walls to block vis.

the rmf is there to look at.

EDIT: this is actually why ii was asking about detail textures. That would really fix the way the terrain looks.

yesh... problems. there's always a problem.

well... enough of that, i guess i'll continue modelling for a while now that i got that mapping urge out of me.

EDIT: this map isn't a part of turnstile, it just shows that i can do a whole lot of terrain for th turnstile landscapes. it's for deathmatch just for fun if anyone wants to try and play it.

The r_speeds of this map are rather decent in the center area of the map. Also, it wide open with no major sectioning to help vis out. So when this method of terrain is placed in a focused singleplayer environment, it won't be so harsh. This map has flaws and kinks, and i probably won't clean it up. from this, i need to move on to more important tasks.

well yes, there are conflicts between wads. Two wads with textures by the same name randomly spread both textures through out the map. Its ugly. But if the texture is the exact same texture with the same name and everything, there is no conflict.

So yes, you can add the textures you used from the halflife.wad into yours, but do not change the name or the texture itself.

you do not need to include any of the default textures. we all should have the hlaflife.wad

anything that is not a default, such as mytextures.wad or whatever its called, should be included into the map package. Renaming is not necessary.

usually overlapping is when two surfaces cross, by definition.
Sometimes you have the corners of faces going to the wrong vertexes. Sometimes even i need to correct it manually.

It is a problem whe it comes to skinnings, because then you'll see your skin flicker like it does when you overlap stuff in hammer.

I don't know what else to say, just double check everything and make sure it's all neat.

it's a nice model yet needs completions.

I hope you're going to skin this nicely, because i'm getting mixed up with the handle being the majority of the gun. It has good shape, but are the polys bad with those curves?

its sad, but maybe we're not ready for it yet. We tried it out and felt what its like to have a server. I think its worth it'd be worth it if it became really popular. Maybe do an awsome amx mod or somethin to attract people. That ozdm is really fun if its still around, or still goes by that name.

It'll be back, i know it will.

EDIT: i do plan on donating to TWHL in a few months once i have the money.

speaking of which, i might actually be interested in this compo after all. Since after some recent mapping experiments came out with outstanding results, I could throw something together.

Since this is the "2006 Mapping Competition" and all that, do we get a year for a map or is there less time limit.
