...Anyway, I really would rather not have this thread degrade into a sermon. I do not want to hear it, and I am quite sure that no one else really does either.
If you don't want to start a conflict between the differences of twhl and snarkpit, don't defend and counterpoint and then try to block the subject. Because that will only provoke. Attack isn't the only thing that starts war.

Juging is quite the task if there is a lot of entries. I would like to help judge if no one minds, especially the compo i get to choose for winning the HLDM compo. I Spent a long time choosing a good theme too

I think we could trust some members to be judges, but how would someone earn that? It's not like we can practice or anything.

well i could use it for alot of things.

DEVELOPEMENT
Remember that gravity device i talked about in the beginning of this project?

I ACTUALLY MADE IT!
An upgrade to your HEV suit allows you to defy gravity for short periods of time, allowing you to soften a fall, jump 4 times as high, and hover across gaps that were previously unjumpable!!! Not only that, i found a way to strengthen the initial jump height! I've searched for a way to do this on the net for ages, and i think i'm the first to do it.

The Gravity Device upgrade will go into the new demo for sure.

But what about Cell factor. That game is pretty much based on pumbling your opponents with crap. Is it possible they attached a simple hit box on each object to simplify it's interaction, but only physically it could be detailed with the collisions. Perhaps that's the unseen element that solves the debris not hurting you problem as m_garg said.

You could have some powerful gaming if you also had a card for lighting as well, or even my personal favorite, the Environmental Card. Which handles mega complex amounts of plants and organic forms.

...yes, hl2 uses havok. It was very heavily modified to fit into source. I read it at the valve wiki.

I was messing with max for a 15 minute block of free time given every so often from class. (Yeah, instead of smoking cigarettes like the rest of the art students at sckool, i smoke 3ds max.) I was playing with terrain mapping and terrain-ing in max when i thought... wait a snark, i think i can do this in hammer. So in class when i was supposed to be listening to the instructor, i was daydreaming about how i would go about this. When i got home after a really long day, i tried it out, and it works amazingly! I have yet to refine the method and textures.

In summary: I made a some rather nice terrain that uses the extent of the space provided by hammer. I thought it would take forever to compile and the r_speeds would be shittee. I was happy to be proven wrong, from corner to corner looking at the whole thing (with 16000 max view distance) I only racked up 300-350 wpolies. There is still lots of room for everything else! I would focus the player to the cental area of the map so the r_speeds are more accurately 150 to 200. I just need to plot structures and some trees and so on to liven the place up.

This isn't currently my task, which is actually modelling at the moment. As soon as finish up my current work, i'll fine tune the landscape and post some screenshots. Sorry i don't have any with me now, but soon i will have something.

On a more developemental note, i found yet another way to thicken the gameplay on my mod. Many of the scattered Suzeron have individual tasks for you. So as rewards, you can gain upgrades for your weapons that will increase their power. I think its impossible, or possible but too damn difficult, to incorporate a random quest generator, so i think they will all be predetermined.

what the fuck, Watson?

Crysis looks to me like the compilation of all the little things that make HD graphics nice. Nothing really spectacular. A good example is the PS3 and its potential, or even the Wii. The Xbox 360 will have its own short-lived generation before the next 2 systems come out.

As far as HL3 goes, source is a grade of HD graphics. If they do make a engine all new for HL3, it's gonna pwn. Alot. Hard. HL3 will probably look similar to Crysis.

reminds me of the HLDM compo. i got like 7 PM's saying not to enter. I entered anyway and hands-down, i won first place. (my only first place currently) I'm glad i did. Made me feel good about mapping all over again, so i thought to start a larger project and begin work on my mod. As a result of that, i learned to model and all the fun stuff.

Not entering the compo doesn't make you a loser. Even though failure can heed better results than completion.

Misunderstanding seem to easy to commit. I still think it was deliberate. Even taking into account some English translational errors, it looks deliberate.
Now that's really unnecessary to be so dramatic. :quizzical:

I was victim to a huge misunderstanding that lead people to hate my ego a while back, so i respect the fact that i misunderstood you because its terrible to have happen to someone. But since then, i proofread my posts carefully so that it is easy to understand even for those who aren't native to the english language.

That tiny hint of consideration can go a long way, and it has for me. You often see quotes used to specify opinions better. That's why they are there.

What threw me off was that you followed that emote with the paragraph about knowing professionals. With no previous context in order, i believed that you were commenting and counterpointing. The little sidenote at the end didn't help either.

You really do seem knowledgable of the field. (on topic) i think you should enter the competition even though people say not to. Do things for your own reasons, if you choose not to, it should be for your own reason.

Well sorry that i don't have connections like you would. But your point is irrelavent because pressure is the downfall to anything if you think about it. Yet it will always be there. Those in the profession probably love to do it, and those who just want to do it get snuffed out. The big shock is going from single mapper to map with a department of artists and engineers, then seeing your work be finished by hands that are not your own. Mapping does take time and energy, especially today, whether you're mapping for low specs or not. Also, teamwork is a skill best had.

That aside, why the hell do you think i'm lying? I own books about level and game design theory. I'm in college for the art of it! Did you really think that you are the only knowledgable person around. (in which you would modestly say you aren't anyway) There are tons of resources (published and net based) for the field of level design. It's becoming an old subject and the knowledge of it is out there.

Pressuring people to map is never a good thing.
As a profession you are forced to map because you have deadlines and a paycheck to get. I've read a dozen of interviews with level designers (not just casual mappers) and they all agree that it is not something to underestimate.

Might i iterate that you should enter, Orpheus. (but do it for TWHL, we will love you)

game responisvely. like alcohol, and drugs, and everything else thats good for ya. Too much of a good thing is bad. Same can be said about graphics. Sure its nice and all, but photorealistic gore for a young kid can be traumatizing. And all this has been said.

parents nowadays piss me off. I saw a lady on the bus yell at her little crying boy to "shut the fuck up you're giving me a headache!" while all the kid wanted was to be held since the bus was moving. (highest grade in parenting class :glad:  )

I think everyone needs a dose of responisibility with the power we can behold in this day and age. Even for developers with the gore and realism. Even if they target older audiences.

goldsource threw me off too.

Lets rename it the "Crete Engine" for its stocky, rigid, and somewhat harsh, yet flexible and workable, and sturdy lets not forget about that.

There will be a sequel for a few easy reasons.

1 - Characters, story, and setting can easily be plotted out.
2 - Fan base will buy into it.
3 - New Technology of any sort will please third party developers.
4 - Above all else, Money.

Oh god, thy're not continuing on to HL3? But they HAVE to make up for that shitty ending in HL2!!! I was so dissapointed! i want my money back. So i guess we'll never find out who Gman is or any of that.

well about Gman, i've seen some theories that Gman is Gordon's son, but only based on some minor similarities, and not much evidence to back that up. Honestly, that concept alone would make HL3 totally worth it to the fan base.

To pull a hugely awsome twist on the saga, HL3 should be more about the Vortigaunts and Gman. but who would be the bad guys? Think, valve! Think!

This time, make a new TWHL smiley face using the base image provided. Its an easy one and anyone with MSpaint can enter.

A few simple rules:
 • Cannot go larger than the space given. (48x48)
 • Must use the smiley in some way.
 • Be creative.

our brains are relaxed when we have fun or are experiencing easy activity. but in certain situations, our brains speed up for critical moments simulating your speed up and slow of time. It's usually minor, but noticable nonetheless.

yes, Bullet-time would need reflexes, and that lunatic adrenaline high to go with it.

Frame rate would only have a small impact on it, since its a constant stream of data. But the brain photoshops the image we see, taking out crap thats in the way, like veins and blood vessels in the eye as well as blotchy holes from retinal burns. Speeding things up would give our brains less time to repair the image we see, thusly bullettime would give you crappy vision depending on how much of it we're getting. This is proven with "Tunnel Vision" some people get under adrenaline rushes.

Religion is skewed today more than it ever was.

I think we're all wrong about all of life's mysteries and death is a good thing. Consider it a way to become assentiant and invisible to everyone around you. Who doesn't want to fly and go invisible, mess with people's dreams and poltergeist a room and watch the n00b mortals say, "how the hell did that get there." I'm not saying to go out and kill yourself, but consider it the next step in life, rather than the end of it.

Yes. Religion seems more evil than good. Not that i'm against it, i just think it's stupid for people to be so damn ignorant of the blatantly obvious. Life sucks ass then you die. But the obvious thing everyone loves, no matter what. This is what keeps us going and cheered from the misery. Love is the meaning of life, so stop hating and enjoy life and all of the crap you missed out on by hating.

ice still has some level of plasticity as well as a threshold of rigidity and brittleness. Step on it lightly allows the ice to give a little for support. Stepping harshly on it too fast and stretch it to crack and break. This is dumb.

Levitation can be achieved by emitting a radio brain wave that reorganizes the surrounding air molecules beneath you to bond tightly enough to stand on. Pyscho kinetics if you will. There are other ways, such as magnetising your body's polarization frequency to counter balance the forces of gravity.
