The Stiletto blade is a key in turnstile.

:aghast: i've said too much!

Anyway, the only other melee weapon would've been an upgrade to the HEV suit's gloves. When up close, you can grab an enemy and freeze them in a shell of ice and shatter them to pieces in a shotgun blast of ice. It would also be used to grab certain walls and climb them. But this idea lasted only a minute, and due to it's complexity, removed entirely. It was a cool idea, though.

Heh, wow. this really took off quickly.

I tried to keep the names as close to the originals as possible. The HL2 names are too long for wally so there shortened.

Not every texture made it into the wad. I think i excluded 20 that were lights or accidentally extracted skins. The lights were so few in numbers, about 6, that i didn't bother including them and making up a new .rad file for them.

Thanks for all of the great feedback. Lemme know how they turn out in a map.

POST SCREENS PLEASE!

Turns out the that First chapter wins...

I'll complete the Feature/Environment demonstration :)

sorry, but i don't want to spoil anything, and i don't have the scripts worked out yet and such. My comp is dead so i can't work on it for now. Will have a new compy soon.

Here's something new:

I'm wondering if i can manage to grab that 30 seconds? sounds tough.
I hope to lay down at least 30 seconds of fun in the demo.

in Info on R_speeds Post #169792
To display them, type "r_speeds 1" in the console.

You'll get a FPS (Frames per second) and some numbers.

wpoly is the world poly count. This is all of the faces you make in the editor. A good amount is 800, try to keep it under 1000.

epoly is the poly count of the models and entities like monsters and weapons. These count unlike the wpoly and can be much higher, but not outrageous.

The are many ways to lower r_speeds and keep the detail good. But that is a whole other thing. :glad:

TWCS

I mapped CS at first, but you just grow out of it when people bash on you about that.

Instead, i map usually HLDM now since TWHL has a HLDM server and can host your maps if they deem worthy enough. PLUS it's not so uptight to rules and layout sensitive.

Issue: The demo is close, but would should it be

3 Choices:

Option A) Finish the Environment/Feature Demonstration

Option B) Build the First Chapter of the actual game

Option C) Build the Turnstile Hazard Course

Only pick 1.

i'm not using hi-res alien models and such.

the R_speeds are well under 900 overall wpoly wise. i think the top is 890 on the demo so far.

The detail on the weapons are one-sided. Though it appears on both sides for now just for construction sakes. they will later be nulled and optimized.

SUPER METROID

The part where you push that miniboss of the Norfair area back into the acid lava and it's skin melts off as it screams. Then it crawls out as a skeleton and just falls over beside you. That freaked me for a while and now it's my favorite game.

Playing HL for the first time was rather freaky to, i might as well say.

in Mapping vs Modelling *ding* FIGHT! Post #168699
OK, OK!

Sheesh, chillax.

I think they are each equally imprtant. Mapping is just the environment, and you need models to live in that environment to make the experience more life-like or involving. There are many kinds of models and many styles of mapping.

Now, here's where it sways. A Modeler is the mapper's bitch if the mapper needs props and such. But the character modeler gets paid more than the mapper because he makes the one component you see the most and he's paid a fat-load to sell it. The mapper makes something thats a little less frequent. Sometimes there are areas in a game you see only once. Now, mappers are most likely to be promoted to LEAD GAME DESIGNER because they DO have an imagination. But not only that, they fully understand how everything reacts with what and where. Good mappers evolve into designers real fast in the industry.

Mappers start small, then pimp all.

:glad:

EDIT: NO, mappers DO NOT DO IT ALL BY THEMSELVES.

You have a layout designer, concept artist, primitves, detailer, texture artist, lighting, and a level programmer.

The HL1 defaults are blurry.

I rarely rescale my textures unless needed anyway and almost are always scaled by 1. They look good anyway, right?

I'm just puting my texturing skills to good use. Though the demo for my mod will back up one day.

EDIT: I'll retile and realign them. Make some of them random and such as well.

And Yes, there are lots of trims in HL2. Every wall has a corresponding trim. :D

Here's the question:

If I took the time to put every applicable HL2 material in a HL1 wad and preserve the awsome detail/crispness of the textures, would you use it?

Or has this already been done?

This is something everyone should download. Hopefully it'll be like a new default wad.

So Yay, or Nay?

Nowadays, it takes more work to make games fun. HL2 is possibly the most fun game i've ever played in my life! Yet mapping for it is itchy at the moment since we have to deal with physics, grpahics, shaders, materials, and all of that.

HL1 stuff (is of course) easier. But we as mappers DO THIS FOR FUN. If you were payed to map for source to produce a game to make money, that is a little different.

People are attracted to fun and easy naturally, as i see this subject.
