surely you can force non-believers to become believers, or there wouldnt be any..

Changing someones POV over the internet, through a forum, now THATS unlikely.

I agree that people who dont like chocolate ice-cream are idiots, it is the best ice cream AND THATS A FACT.

its their fault for releasing a demo with only 10 enemies to kill in it then!!

Its hard to describe what I mean by it not being 'fluid', I'll have another go at it to see if i can better describe it.

Not everyone has an ultra fast broadband connection, took me about 6 hours to dload.

Surely its GOOD for the economy because america puts such a rediculous sum of money into its defence budget, if you don't have a war every few years all those bombs will go to waste

No it is NOT worth it, 1 and a half gig for 20-30 minutes of gameplay, if that!

I'll start right out by saying how hopelessly subjective and biased I am because of my love of Oblivion and the Elder Scrolls series over Might and Magic. With that in mind I still thought I'd give it a go because I enjoy fantasy RPGs and quite liked the look of the preview videos.

The graphics pale in comparison to the powerful engines behind Oblivion, but the first 'proper' level you get to play has some pretty visual effects and well constructed models/materials. Its obviously source and shows its age because of this (a lot of harsh angles/world brushwork), but its far from an ugly game. Could've done with a flashlight though, that bluevision is pants ;)

The feel of the game takes some getting used to, not only can you see your character but the head bob is very significant, with the display moving all over the place in combat and even while turning. Combat is interesting, but doesn't feel fluid, you dont get the real 'clang' of swords and shields in Oblivion and the feeling you are putting power into attacks.

Other misc problems: the UI is a little messy, especially the binding/startup menu system, black on black? What were they thinking? The characters foot also seems to extend about 3 feet further forward than it looks :S

Maybe I just need to play it more to appreciate it, I wasn't that impressed though.

Finally a post I agree with, In a way I lump religion and science as two seperate things in the same way when completely unproveable concepts like the creation of the universe are concerned, you believe in one or the other. Though surely you believe SOME scientific principles though, e.g. gravity, so they aren't totally seperate. You could easily believe all of science but that in the end God is involved in some way, or just that he started it all off.

The word 'proof' is also a little flaky, the only 'proof' to use the definition of the term, of god and most of the bible is the bible itself, whereas science works upon clear observation and experimentation. Science has many methods at its disposal to provide proof whereas proof of religion only comes from hyperanalysing (probably a word) a single tome, which is surely literary suicide were any other book concerned.

Belief is a funny thing, you outright reject the idea of supernatural phenomena like ghosts, yet surely following the miracles of our Lord you believe he came back from the dead and walked on water!

Adventure games usually contain puzzles to tax the mind, but try not to turn this into a discussion about Portal please!

Elon, you should try something like Dreamfall or Broken Sword 3, they are great on the story and adventure front, but lax on the puzzles to appeal to a wider audience. The anti-Myst games as it were.

Im certainly looking forward to the new Sam and Max game, its episodic but given the fact the original game was based on both an episodic comic and television series, its hardly that much of a step backwards. Hopefully itll have the same style and humour of the original and more gameplay than the rather lackluster Bone series (the other episodic adventure the company has produced).

As a genre I think its woefully overlooked, for those who don't know I look at it as the ultimate storytelling medium, an almost logical extension to the book. Despite the cliche, the term 'interactive story' comes to mind and in the good games, the point is that the whole game is an ADVENTURE, following the experience of the protagonist throughout an entire story.

Its so much more than the games this site encompasses in its 'world', no halflife or fps could ever give the same level of attention to story than any adventure game could, maybe thats why I'm so picky when the subject is debated. Most modern fps' only hint at their plotlines, with the emphasis being on action, something that unfortunately is creeping into the adventure genre, perhaps to entice our more thrill-seeking companions.

Anyway, is anyone else such a fan as I? Certainly there have been some good examples (albiet sometimes love/hate examples) in recent times to make the genre shine, The Longest Journey 2: Dreamfall despite falling almost into the genre of 'interactive movie' was one of the most compelling games I've played in a long time. At the other end of the spectrum, there is Myst, if you've never played a Myst game its pretty much impossible to explain why anyone enjoys them, possibly the hardest games ever made!

Nothing can be proven EXCEPT for pure mathematical principles. This is the fundamental basis of all science, obviously. If you are never willing to accept any non mathematical principle because it cannot be 'proven' then you are a relitivist, someone who essentially rejects the scientific method. With the above in mind, stop arguing about such a silly concept.

Religion is just a belief in the supernatural to me, as the supernatural has little or no evidence for it, I cannot prove it with my scientific beliefs, thus I reject it. I guess I'm very hardline when it comes to anything supernatural, maybe I need a vision or something. Stop saying I hate Christians, I don't HATE Christians, I hate fundamental ideologies and when that ideology enroaches on what I believe is the evolution of the human condition and a human right (e.g. homosexuality)

You aren't answering a question logically (and STOP MENTIONING CHRISTIANITY IT ISNT THAT), you are posing rediculous counter-arguments that waste my time answering and annoy me. Everything i'm saying is coming from things I know, not things I make up to try and sound clever.

sound recorder can record sounds only from your pc, in most modern sound cards theres an option to set the recording input to 'wave', audigy cards also have a 'what you hear' which is pretty self explanatory.

You can also do it from the windows sound panel by selecting the options menu -> properties -> select 'recording' and click OK. Now whichever thing you select the checkbox under will be the recording source.

Regarding software, goldwave is one of the better (and cheaper) pieces of software ive come across. I used it for all my custom sounds in maps.

People HAVE claimed intelligent falling in the same sense that people have claimed that a giant spaghetti monster created the universe, you cannot disprove it because there are thousands of sites that make this 'alternative theory' clear.

Gravity is not in the fucking bible, shut up! Just because falling is in the title theory of 'inteligent falling' doesnt mean it isnt a theory about gravity! You are not a fucking scientist or a philosopher so stop using big words to try and sound clever, you aren't!

I just got back from a 7 day hike in the German-Swiss* Alps, I think this panorama I made sums up just how astoundingly pretty the region is:
http://www.jobsmaps.com/other/pictures/alpshut_panorama.jpg

Taken 2100m up in a small refuge we stayed in with a crazy swiss-german farmer/guardian (the people who man the refuges) who spoke almost no english. Theres nothing like a beer and a hot bowl of soup after a 7 hour hike up 1500m!
  • the german-speaking region of the alps is the bit where the Eiger is, the north-facing side

As I said, the tenets of that religion, which could be anything written or implied. According to the Christian faith, if you dont believe in God and the ressurection of his son Jesus Christ, you goto hell. If you dont believe in the Mormon 'new testement' and the second coming of Jesus in america then you will goto hell. If you don't follow Scientology you will not live on a cloud with L Ron Hubbard or something. Et cetera et fucking cetera.

Your comment is so astoundingly stereotypical its funny, I was brought up as a god fearing individual in a very christian school based around a 1000 year old church. However they still made the seperation between faith and other subjects so I was able to make the conscious choice to believe in the entirety of scientific principles over any religious ones.

Most worldly religions with the concept of an afterlife say that if you dont believe in the specific tenets of that religion then you will face an eternal or long suffering damnation in the firey pits of the underworld or hell.

Thus everyone goes to hell, what a shitter.

in MPEG Editing WITHOUT compression Post #191895
just recompress the video into something lossless like Huffyuv for editing, its a lot smaller than uncompressed. MPEG2 is an amazingly slow encoding format however, it takes many times longer to encode a film compared to a comparable divx/xvid codec. You also have to pay for it! I find virtualdubmod (NOT virtualdub) to be an adequate vid editing and compression program, combined with something cheap like Ulead Videostudio 9 (10 is out now). I think Ulead can do quite good mpeg2 editing, but I still recommend recompressing first.

For batch encoding MediaCoder (sourceforge proggy) is by far the best and free-est of any i've used.

Knoppix is usually your last bet for recovering data from an ntfs drive, ive done it before and its not pretty, but at least I didn't lose anything.

Knoppix can write to NTFS in the latest version but why would you want to? It sounds like everythings buggered, I'd save what you can and format then buy a backup drive and hit yourself over the head for not doing daily backups before. If you dont backup eventually you will lose all your data, I'm amazed people can be so complacent about this point.
