The server - for some reason, my game execs a "gamestartup.mp3" when I connect, and i have a song playing when I join the TWHL server (im not sure if the two things are connected). It loops, and it's really frigging irritating.

I don't get this problem anywhere else.

Its a guitar tune with some guy singing softly.

Oh don't worry about that - mine is far from complete and very flawed in places! The only thing that "wound me up" was the American slant on it ( I blame all 4 powers ).. - I hate getting into historical arguments because (for all I said earlier this thread against it) I do get on my high horse, but it pains me to see historical arguments debated without proper consideration of all the factors.

You have a very good point toward Americas stance on Versailles though - Woodrow Wilson - despite some animosity in his terms of the treaty - was the fairest of the 4 powers deciding how to deal with Germany. Whether this was a vested interest or not is another issue, but had America had the power to force the hands of Britain (and especially France) to a more agreeable, fair deal for Germany, Hitler would probably have never been in power.

Strange when you think about it..

More importantly, and with no disrespect - what age are you studying this at? Education is engineered to be relevant to the understanding you (and your class) can comprehend.

I started enjoying History aged... 11 ? We did WW1 and why it happened - the reasons then were "Franz Ferdinand got shot, Germany attacked France through Belgium"

As you go on you see that in reality events were far, far more complex than this.

Some of what you say has arguments and truths to it but it's not the accepted historical explanation. As I say your points have elements of truth in, but they in no way explain why, how the events happened in the way they did before and after the war.

Ironically even Wikipedia will explain what happens with the Treaty of Versailles - and when you look at World War II in progress you can see Hitlers attitude toward Britain (even pre war with Chamberlain) and the impossible nature of things like Operation Sealion.

History is a topic of factors - you can never say "this is the one reason why x did/didn't happen".

Xyos212 - i've studied the Treaty of Versailles for 6 years, i've been in the Palace where it was signed, i've read numerous books, watched 2/3 films and I am currently studying for a Degree in History.

Everything you say is pretty much wrong, I assure you.

Oh indeed Job, but when you're making grandiose points about how the American administration is all loving and benevolent, it's probably better to cite something other than Wikipedia as the fount of all knowledge :P

Hey Xyos, most of what you said about the Treaty of Versailles (or, "a letter", as you call it) is wrong.

You're also wrong about what started the First World War.
You're also wrong about the USA not punishing Germany.
You're also wrong about Hitlers "hatred" for Britain (and arguably France)
You're also wrong about how economy works.

You're also wrong about using Wikipedia as a source to back up your statements. You can't trust a freely editable encyclopedia, and there's large swathes of pages on there that are wrong or are directly contradicted by other articles.

You make a good point there satch in defence of promoting education and the advantages of being learned. I'd say Americas dabblings in the Middle East and further afield, led by a particularly inept administration is already bringing the downfall of the empire.

As a superpower it's not even a case of America being pushed into #2 spot now - with India on the horizon, as well as China, the US dominance will play second fiddle to the Asian giants and possibly Latin American giants, too.

More or less I am trying to say that yes, it does seem a little strange to be attacking a country which is for many who go to it's shores, a land of vast opportunity. To go back to the start of the thread, i'd wager that if you asked random citizens of the United Kingdom pop trivia about their nation they wouldn't be able to answer.

While these people may not be able to debate the rights and wrongs of their country, or discuss a potted history of their nation, they are still citizens who serve their country in some way or another. Intellectual elitism is dangerous ground to walk on, because it is usually those who we would consider "stupid" that keep things ticking day by day.

Keep in mind also, as Nickel well knows, and a few others from here, that I am the first to jump on American foreign policy and international relations, their domestic policies too. I just think it is absurd to make assumptions about an entire nations intelligence and in turn victimise them for not posessing the articulate abilities which as demonstrated here, in the wrong hands and the wrong motivation are the greatest signs of ignorance and stupidity any person can posess.

Oh indeed Andy, don't get my evil words wrong - and it's just an opinion after all ;)

I know a community needs fresh blood all the time otherwise it would die on it's feet. The "old crowd" is more or less inactive now to a large extent, and the quieter members have stepped in or worked their way into the community and kept it alive. I just get frustrated when people don't read Stickies, rules or even peoples posts a lot of the time.

The advent of HL2 has created lots of ungrateful retches just farming for answers to mapping questions, and it's sad, but I expect common courtesy on the internet. Like you say, it's ballooned more than ever with HL2 and CS:S being released at the same time.

It's not all bad, new members and great new mappers keep on emerging and help each other along, it just seems the tides and tides of people who can't be bothered to help themselves abuse peoples good nature.

Never mind, it's the way it is.

I agree with Andy too habboi, you should use as many sites as possible to get the best of both worlds. If it comes across as "I think TWHL is a dump" it's not true at all. Having found this thread just to keep people updated, I've actually lurked and read a lot more posts here and it's a nice little community.

The last thing I want is some kind of inter-site bitchfest, because like Andy says, that's just silly.

/2cents :)

Andy: We have a large and established community who will "live through" this downtime without a doubt, so I'm not worrying about loss of fans - I just get wound up by rumours and whatnot.

It's quite depressing that people get so attached to the site TBH :P

Either way, I want it back so I can post my farewells before next Friday, that's all. The Snarkpit losing a few of the newer and attached "newbie" crowd to refind (that's not a word) it's identity would not be a bad thing, TBH !

It's an exploit people use to crash servers, not particularly funny at all. myg0t are in on the craze.

I've updated the Snarkpit server with a plugin to counteract this "bug", and added a pretty extensive list of ID's caught using the bug to their advantage or to crash the server.

Because its set in a physics/chemistry/laboratory based environment, Gordon is a scientist, half-life is a major part of physics, its a play on words etc etc.

Can't be arsed to argue against all of the conspiracy theory stuff again Jahzel, as we both know its unresolvable, but as for the so called "new world order" - you have a basic misunderstanding of real fascism in practice, as the US is more closely aligned to a theocracy than anything else.

Most of those questions you can actually shoot down in flames quite easily as well having had a quick scan. Like I say, you should focus your energy on something productive ;P
