yes, and a minimod is a good way to start, lets you use any style you want, and not worry about other people's mapping style.

Max. upload size?
for tekcities, it's 5mb. Not a problem for me, I like to compress everything anyway. And killer, yes i'll pm you when the server move is done. Actually, if you feel like checking yourself, goto tekcities.com/shp.php and if they're done moving, it'll ask you to login.

yeah, tekcities rocks, just that you won't be able to create an account for a while, they're moving everything to a new server. And the ads are tiny text ads, no popups, 5gb space, 10gb bandwidth! For free!

IE sucks in tons of viruses and spyware! Yes, use firefox or opera, remove spyware, and if that doesn't work, reinstall windows. As a last resort, of course.

uninstall windows installer. Then you'll have no problems. That's what I did, and I had none whatsoever. Then if you ever do need it again, get v.3.5.

Athlon64 is a marketing scam
Unless, of course, you use them, and then you realize that "hey, that athlon64 worked better than my p4 did, and it was slower! wow!" although hard drive speed is also an issue. But a 1.6ghz athlon64 outperforming a 3.2ghz p4 in any situation is just nuts!

Athlon64 is the way to go, if you can afford it. Then, when more 64 bit apps come out, you'll be able to use them to their full potential. (just don't get one in a laptop!)

I think it is a gigantic step from Windows 98-Blue-screen-of-death.
Windows 98 SE is a hell of a lot more stable than anything else, in my experience! (except for winxp, which is pretty good, too.)
As so many people have said, windows is the way to go, because unless you are m0p, who apparently plays hl without windows, you'll need it to run hl/hl2/steam. My suggestions: Defrag your hd often, it will improve performance, get a good hard drive (fast) , and remove programs like msn messenger, any of that stuff that loads when your os does. If you know what you're doing, or have a friend who does, you can get by just fine with a somewhat inferior computer.

14 years, 9th grade.
ahh, the joys of being a freshman! (not)

I'm a senior this year, after I graduate, time to go to college and get drunk (I mean, go to class)

It's interesting the age range we have here at twhl, probably 12yrs-40yrs! And elon, 15 years old, daubster, 14? never would have guessed! wow. You guys are good mappers/nice+helpful people for your age.

definately put an alternate free hosting site. preferably without forms and subscriptions.. people wont want to register on every site
fileplanet gives you 1gb of free hosting! and savefile.com (I think that's right) gives you unlimited space, 60mb max file size. (you have to register there, too)

The only problem with this that I can see is that all of the decals are in decals.wad, and the only thing that differentiates the decals from the transparent textures is the wad file that they're in! So, I'm not sure if you can do custom decals. Maybe try it with a custom wad, see what happens.

well you're working with just a trigger_once and a light, delete those two, and recreate them. Actually, delete them, save your map, close hammer, and reload it. I've had some trouble with brush based entities and hammer.

well, i've never had problems with that... does the trigger_once have a property called "trigger state"? that has to be set to "on" (I think) And make sure that you have the names right (i'm sure you do, but triple-check, just in case!)

I'm guessing that it is the last color in the palette of the decal that determines it's actual color, much like the transparent color of other images. But maybe i'm wrong. I never checked.

you use the compass in entity properties to set direction that you move, and use the texture application mode to change the rotation of the texture

in Difference between a 128mb and a 256? Post #139504
me=stupid right now. You're right, I think. But I do know that the video memory on the card is used for pages, anyone who has ever written graphical applications knows that you have to use page flipping or you get a crappy framerate. I don't know much about gfx cards either, but I do know that unless your game (i.e. hl2) has to load an absolute shitload of textures, having a card over 128-256mb is probably overkill (at least now.) My card has 128mb, and can almost run hl2 @ 1600x1200, and a slow hd. So a 256mb card should last you for a while, anyway. :)

in Difference between a 128mb and a 256? Post #139498
Most of what that memory is for is for "pages", where the card draws the screen before actually putting it on the computer screen. Here are some memory requirements for 1 "page" for various resolutions
800x600 - 1.37mb (all @24 bit color)
1024x768 - 2.25 mb
1280x960 - 3.51mb
1280x1024 - 3.75 mb
1600x1200 - 5.5 mb

Keep in mind that the video card probably will have several pages in memory at once, and that there will be other things in memory as well.
btw, if you have a different resolution the formula for the space taken up by a page is: ((xres*yres*3)/1024)/1024 (in mb)

How does one going about making a source splash screen? Come to think of it, can you get an old copy of hl1 (v1.1.1.0) to work w/source? Or is it an entirely different build of the game?

For a decent PC, you're gonna be looking at nearly two grand.
no. wrong. I got a laptop with an athlon64+60gig hd+15.4" screen+512mb for $1500.
Depends what resolution. Even a 9800xt + 3.4GHz P4 + 1GB of RAM should be able to play HL2 with everything at max
radeon igp, 3.2ghz p4, 512mb ram shared with video card, and I can run hl2 @ 1280x800!

Spend some money, ansith. It'll be worth it in the long run, because you won't have to spend as much on upgrades later.
