Be a lame ass but Jimmi aint half bad and actually makes TWHL exciting...
true, and I agree... kinda. A little spam here and there, maybe even 2 accounts, isn't so bad. But 10 accounts, pretending to be moderators, spamming everything... ban him. He's been "yelled" at about this before, hasn't he?

@rimrook: could be useful!
@jimmi: the map seamless filter in the gimp is crap. Better to do it yourself, you'll get better results.

well said. That's just a piece of crap 3-minute job, and I really didn't know what I was doing, and didn't bother to try to make it seamless. I really am better at the non-repeating textures (signs&such) or tiles.

You only read the tutorial
wtf? "the tutorial"? You mean the tutorial on making textures? yes, i've read that, and I do know how to make textures, and compile a map using a custom wad file, because i've done it (not in any of my posted maps, I don't think.)

yeah, just look at what so many people have done with no more than the original half-life models, sounds, and textures! But when I can, i'll dl the sdk and see what (if anything) I can do. And I do custom textures/wads/decals...

Anyway, knowing a little C is fine for little adjustments like changing HUD colors and positions and other small changes, but adding new monsters gets harder. Some basic understanding of classes and inheritance would be good if you're planning to do anything more complex.

Also, I'd recommend looking at what changes you want to make to the game before 'doing some coding'. It's no fun to throw away big plans when you find out certain things are too difficult to handle half-way down a project.
Good luck though.
well, right now, anything I do will simply be to learn how to code in C. I'm a die-hard QB fan, but I've been wanting to learn C for a while. Anyway, I know that it will be a while before i'm capable of doing any major modifications, but a little change in the hud could be nice. Thanks for the suggestions.

I looked at some c stuff, it's a lot like jscript as far as syntax, so if anyone can tell me how to get the source, i'll look at it and try to find out how to modify it.

How about this:

You are a scientist assigned to work in this top-secret lab, where there are experiments going on with teleportation... stuff like that. You get there only to find that all of the scientists are dead or in hiding, and the military has tried to do a cleanup but failed miserably, and you're the last hope to do the cleanup. It's like post-disaster hl1, I know, but it's a little different, keeping with your lab theme, and it's the best I can come up with using the original hl1 models and such. If you can get someone to do custom models, voices, stuff like that, you could do anything, really. And I looked at some C related stuff, and if I can learn C (I already know some pascal, jscript...) then I might be able to do some coding! Just let me know what you think of this idea.

PSPad has files you can load that define a language, such as html, php, c, c++, basic... so that it highlights code, and you can add new languages, too! But as far as I know, it only works in windows.

I used qbasic. That was probably 2-3 years ago, but if you want the source, i'll try to find it. I might still have the hard drive. And what is notepad++? never heard of it.

Ive got some ideas for the 1st 3 chapters
those ideas sound a little hl1-ish. you start by wandering around the lab, do a test on some thing, everything goes wrong, and you try to get out. If I can think of anything better, i'll post it.
But I can help you with
--mapping (some) and map testing
--web page
--graphic arts
& if I manage to learn C anytime soon, I may be able to do some coding.

with no limits what so ever
hmmm, I wonder if you could modify the hl engine (if you could get the source) to have fewer limits? After all, computers now are far better than they were when hl was introduced!

And I'd map my town, as well as all of the buildings, and inside them, and such.
It is totally inappriate, offensive, and does not contribute to the forum.
right on! for the sake of the rest of us, use email, we don't want to hear about your problems with homosexuality, racism, etc.

yes! I use it all of the time, because it is "safe" as compared to carving. ex: every time I carve with a cylinder, I get sub-unit leaks! :furious:

people tend to dislike the vertex tool because you can totally screw over a brush by using it. But with it, you can make brushes that you cannot make any other way. So use vm, experiment with it, learn from it!

hasn't happened yet! :D (but i'm sure it will, and then i will realize the error of my ways :( ) so running vis with the -fast option (zoner's tools) is probably a good idea in any case.

And if you have areas that the player cannot go into in the normal course of the game, put clip brushes there. (I read it in the tutorials)
