All questions and issues regarding compo 17 in this thread please.

All right, here i go again! Here's my idea:

I want you to create your own Resonance Cascade Scenario, like we've seen in the original Half-Life. Your job is to:

[i]- Make a fully function Testchamber.
  • Don't recreate the original test chamber, make your own!
  • Make somesort of specimen to be tested.
  • Use detail! This will be a small map, so you can add as much detail as you wish, but you can also add additional area's, like a transit system to the test chamber or something, as long as it is playable!
  • And finally, make the actual Resonance Cascade Scenario! (You know, things go horribly wrong)
  • Be original and creative, and try not to copy stuff from the original game.[/i]

Well, yes and no. You can make and ending, but its not really required.

Extra cool stuff impresses the judges. Just make sure it does stick to the subject reasonably.

This is a compo that doens't require lots and lots of mapping (brushwork) but a lot more entity work. Lets see how you pull this off. :)

This is an HL1 competition. After this and the sort-of-unofficial Source compo, the competitions will probably alternate between engines. I think having them running simultaneously is, and would be, bad entry count-wise.

No. It would prevent mappers from working for both compos. Alternating is a better idea.
About the theme of this compo, I think that it is too similar to the game, or similar to build a machine, etc. I havent decided if I'll participate...

Well, couldn't you have two seperate competitons for the same topic? One for HL1, and another for HL2? Or did I completely miss the point?

Compo 15 has just ended, and another has started! wow, that is how it should be done every month.. say Seventh, how about making a link from the compo page to another page listing lots of compo ideas.. (for twhl 3) just a thought.

Meh. I quite like the idea of having them run simultaneously, but one has a longer deadline than the other... or something. Like it was with the last compo. :)

Not really, then you'd probably be restricted as to what you could do in Source.

I'm with Kasperg, definitely. One at a time. I'll probably introduce some flexibility timing-wise, though ? there's no reason why they're always a month.

I don't understand your sentence either, Elon.

Keep in mind, that i'll judge the entries on the following aspects:
  • Level design (No blocky rooms/brushes)
  • Detail
  • Texturing
  • Entity work
  • Third party area's (not required, but it adds in the overall gameplay)
But the top four aspects are most important.

Heh.. I just got an awesome idea for my entry! Damn - this time I'll start the entry on time... Destiny was so buggy, just because I was in a big hurry to finish it.. :)

Nah, he means that when he wins a HL compo, he thinks he'd be a bad judge for a Source compo because he knows nothing about Source mapping.

I think there's a point to that. If technical aspects are judged as well then the judge should know what he's dealing with.

Maybe keep the judging and idea thinking from those compo's apart from each other, e.g. the HL compo winner judges in the next HL compo and the Source compo winnern judges for the next Source compo?

That was definitely the idea ? who says that all the HL entrants will even have HL2? Gives them a month to decide on their subject too... ooh, that could mean some more From Base competitions!

Muzzle: don't worry, yours is an HL competition, just that, being the present competition thread, it's being used for people talking about what'll happen at the end of it.

The winner of the HL1 compo chooses the next topic and judges FOR THE NEXT HL1 COMPO.

The winner of the HL2 compo chooses the next topic and judges FOR THE NEXT HL2 COMPO.

How does one going about making a source splash screen? Come to think of it, can you get an old copy of hl1 (v1.1.1.0) to work w/source? Or is it an entirely different build of the game?
