is there a way to cut out a little piece out of a solid box? in this case its to make a window, so i dont have to model every party of the house. that i can just make a box, do the hollow thing and cut out a window.

Well, you can use the carve tool, but it's generally not a good idea. Hammer isn't very clever, and it's likely to make a horrible mess. The best way is to just make the four brushes seperately to form the wall around the hole.

Welcome, by the way.

Cliptool.
Very easy, you use it in the 2d views.
you select the brush you want to clip, and in the 2D view, you drag lines over it and clips it, stright over.
You might wanna click the tool like, 3 times, else, one of the sides you clip over will dissapare.
I suggest, draw a clip line, and click the tool untill no side is red.

Just a note about carving: If you use a box (rectangular solid) to carve, it's not so bad. But NEVER EVER CARVE WITH A CYLINDER!!! If you do, you spend the next hour removing invalid solids and patching leaks.

Actually, if you carve a 10-sided cylinder thru a 8-unit thick wall - nothing bad happens. No invalid solids, extended solids, etc. In fact, if you clip - theres much bigger chance of making a leak.. :

You dont know what your talking about eh?

If you carve, the edges of the brushes getting extended alot. Thus making it harder for the engine to render and offcourse causing odd errors in the view, just look at the vm tutorial.

It's better to use VM and clipping over carving! Carving is an obsilte tool. It's uncontrollable, It ones carved me a block it didn't even touch, not to mention those little splinters that show up sometimes. :nervous:

So yeah, carving's generally bad. You can always do a better job by hand.

Topic o'er.
