do you best and submit it anyway, you still might get a trophy

Yeah. Unfinished is better than nothing, definitely... especially considering the turnout of late.

I'll map all I can.

Might be nice to know that Valve has such problems too. Like they said in one of their commentaries in the level, they left out a puzzle because it wasn't finished by the time the rest of the Lost Coast level was done. So, they cut it out, despite the fact they thought it was a really fun puzzle.

So, maybe you need to cut out some parts rather than just leaving it unfinished because you couldn't do everything you wanted? Good luck with it, everyone. I'm looking forward to some fresh disaster sequences.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-28 18:05:54 UTC Post #144215
Would there be a problem if I introduce some comical elements in this map? I mean, the purpose of playing videogames is usually having fun...
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-28 18:13:17 UTC Post #144217
Yeah, sure... why not? :)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-28 18:42:18 UTC Post #144220
Cutting out for me really isn't an option. In my case, I would have to cut out the voice acting (with which I'm having problems) and the disaster really wouldn't make any sense without the explanation given. And even if I would consider doing that, then there would still be the problem of actually using that for Starlabs. That would mean I would have to redo vast portions (as the whole event would be timed with multimanagers and such) just to adjust the timing. (I may know the length of the voice acting, but you can't say if the events happen to quickly or to slow in correspondence with the voice acting if you can't hear it.)

So just entering what I have isn't an option.

I said I wouldnt post any screenshots until I was sure I'd enter the compo. Well, since I'm almost sure I'll get it done in time, here are 4 screenshots. I have applied the PhotoEditor charcoal filtering to modify the images since I dont really want to give away the real looks of the map until people can download it.

I'm experiencing a huge problem while trying to do a level change in my test chamber. HL just happens to crash when I walk into the level change. The map names and landmarks are perfectly setup. I'm not getting an error message from HL, but one from Windows, the generic error thing in XP.
If I can't solve this, would it be ok to leave instructions to change the map in the form of a game_text or something? I want to submit this map and I dont want the stupid HL bugs to prevent me from doing so.

You probably already know this one, but it's worth a shot: If you run a level with a level change straight from compile, then the level change will not work. You need to compile and start the map manually.

Like said, I'm pretty sure you already know, but it might be something you overlooked.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-29 18:39:29 UTC Post #144408
Yes, I checked the tutorials in this site and many others before writing my last post. But nothing worked.
Well, you'll just have to type 2 words for the levelchange. Maybe it's only a bug with my OS, but since I'm not sure I cant take that risk. I have been one of the judges in a compo before, and I know how unpleasent it is when the map doesnt work straight away...

I have a very busy week coming up so I had to finish it quickly. That doesnt mean its unfinished. I hope people like it, or at least find it funny. I apologize for any bugs there might be etc.

EDIT: I'm going to try to combine both maps into one so people wont have to use the console to change levels

If you people would like a extension, just ask. I think it will be no problem. Right, 7th?

Let's wait and see how many entries get in by the deadline; even if it runs out of time, I can re-open it by extending the date.

This, and yet the most people have voted for "four weeks" in the poll at present?

Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 11:25:18 UTC Post #144461
four weeks mapping time isn't a problem, but you should announce the compo a week or two ahead of time so people can start formulating Ideas in thier head. But don't tell everything, leave out details like "it needs an RPG trap" or "there must be a Resonance cascade like senerio"

then the people who are working on the current compo can at least get an idea in their head instead of wasting a week or two brainstorming. and the people who arn't in the current one can do the same, but maybe with a little Idea sketch mapping

and I would like an extention
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 11:30:22 UTC Post #144462
Thing is, if you get your entry done nice and early, you get bored waiting, whereas if you have almost no free time, you're really pushed to get it in. Four weeks has been plenty of time to get an entry in for all the competitions I've entered before.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 11:35:40 UTC Post #144463
Yeah, 2 if you cant do it in 2 weeks time neither can you do it in 4 weeks.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 12:20:40 UTC Post #144465
well, I could do my idea in two weeks. but that would only be if I got no homework and didn't have finishing Hostage Situation on my mind
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 16:08:23 UTC Post #144489
If I didn't have homework I could have done it! :nervous: I'll finish this even If the time has ended for it can't be shortened! :tired:
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 17:20:33 UTC Post #144496
Homework is definately not an excuse for not completing a map.
I doubt many people have as much time-consuming homework as me.
http://www.geocities.com/kaspergclan/que_facil.jpg
Some of the things I have to do consist in elevating floor plans of parts of a city (in this case Madrid) and giving each building its real height over sea level.
Once the 3d model is done, we have to do all sorts of things such as rendering the area to see how buildings cast shadows on others depending on the time of the year, etc, etc etc.

I bet you can find some time to map on saturday or sunday mornings... :)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 17:23:20 UTC Post #144497

Even though im late to the table. Im going to try although most likely i won't complete it. I just hope and see.

But your map is a full lab!
Nice work!

Two weeks is not enough in case you make a last minute change and it goes wrong. I've been struggling with time in two week competitions, never had a problem with four weeks. And I'm not entering this one, but if I can find time I'll do the next.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 18:51:42 UTC Post #144507
Actually, i don't think i'll attempt to enter this one. I just don't have any ideas. Nor the time to develop a full map test chamber. :(

I didn't enter this one.
I really needed a big break from mapping after HL Destiny...
After that mod, mapping seemed like torture, because for the last 2 weeks before the ending of the compo - my whole spare time was spent on that...
Although I'm almost 100% sure, that I'll enter the next one.. :)

I hope I wont be able to enter the next one! ;) Whats the minimum of enteries that could be in a compo, 3/4?
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-31 13:28:52 UTC Post #144569
There is no minimum. The Osprey-Apache compo had only 2 entries. Gold and Silver. No bronze.

Heh, just read an (far) above post saying too much time would get boring...

I don't think so. You don't have to map for competitions alone. Just start something for fun. That's what you do it for after all, isn't it? :)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-31 23:30:50 UTC Post #144639
Rather late with this comment:
If you run a level with a level change straight from compile, then the level change will not work. You need to compile and start the map manually.
Not so. I rarely run a map manually while I'm editing, single or multiple.

African time..?
Riiight, well, could you say english time, please? (UK)
I mean, you live there, right? And UK is in the same timezone as sweden.

Captain P, yes it is. I think I meant to use the word frustrating...it's frustrating waiting for the results if you finish that early. Then again, if you finish that early, it's prob not gd enough.

Not entering, lost my will to map :zonked:

I shall still be releasing it sometime, along with the first section of my mod.
