Ok, here's the deal. Me and some friends have a school project to make a half life map out of the school. just outside the school is a statue of the school-logo. It looks like this:

Anyone have an idea on how to make this in Hammer? is it even possible?
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-02 21:26:02 UTC Post #144973
bah, you could, but it would be very blocky looking. Only way is to model it for it to look completely correct.

You could...
a) Model it. The hardest and best-looking way.
b) Brush it in hammer. Pretty difficult, and will most probably look like crap. Sphere tutorial can be found on http://snarkpit.net.
c) Make a regular sphere and give it a special texture looking like that. The easiest way, but quite ugly.

Good luck.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-02 22:02:41 UTC Post #144978
A. nahhhh....

B. I'd do this...
It pretty much just takes a good mind for shapes to do this...
Its very possible to accompish this with VM. Remember, the more Brushes you use, the more realistic it will look. Where you draw your limit is either where you get bored and want to stop, or where it takes up too much memory.
Good luck if you try this method. You will find it will take much more time and consideration that expected...

C. nahhh....

Model it. C) isn't a bad idea, but HL might not draw the inside of the sphere.

It wont draw it for there is no inside. It's just a transperent texture! I'd say B only that it's very very hard. Best way is to model it but it's quite hard to learn how to model from the start and in such a short time. :
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-03 11:31:55 UTC Post #145041
Like Seventh said, C is perhaps the easiest option, and the problem of the non-existing inside can be countered by creating an inverted sphere, texturesd from the inside. Might take some more work than a normal sphere but you'll get the idea.

Model it. Moddeling is the best thing to do here...

Trust me, if you start making such complex shapes brush by brush - you'll:

a) Spend days on it.
b) Spend even more days on it, trying to get rid of invalid brushes, coplanar planes, and other shit.
c) Spend lots of time compiling.
d) Won't be satisfied by the result, cause it will look like crap, because of the crappy shadows and weird lighting.

If you texture it like a sphere it will:

a) Look like crap
b) Look unrealistic
c) Ruin the image of your map, because it's the logo.

Modelling:

a) You'll need ~1-2 days to find the right tuts, learn modelling it.
b) You'll need quite an amount of time to finish the model, compile it, place it right in your map
c) The result will be awesome.

Your choice.. :)

;)

There are a couple of dark shadows here and there, but who cares. Do you care, Billymcburger? If you don't, i have this model for you. :)

ROFL

While everyone's discussing it, Muzzleflash just does it.

Nice one.

^^

I actualy used a quick and dirty method to make that sphere, that explains the dark shadows.

It may not look 100% the same, but its close enough. I think. :)

How did you make it? created the basic sphere then cliped new faces till you had those tons of faces. And then you deleted the unwanted faces and thats how you created the holes? :quizzical:
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-03 13:20:31 UTC Post #145065
Uhm no.

I made a flat piece of it first, then i copied and rotated it to get a cube, then i welded the parts together, and spherefied it. Like i said, quick and dirty, and probaly not the best way to do it. But i think its fine.

To get rid of the ugly smoothing try a autosmooth, not sure if this is ms though.

first of all, thanks olot for all the advice.
Muzzleflash that modell of yours looks awesome.
I must say that I don't know anything about modelling. But I would like to learn, maybe I can have Muzzleflash modell as a base??

First of all,its illegal to use your school in a FPS game that contains blood and violence. But if you do use it,then your school has the right to report you to justice... :|
[p.s:Just make sure that your teachers and wise principals wont know it]

I doubt that it is wherever Billy is, even if it is in Turkey. I also seriously doubt that any non-American educational institution would initiate legal proceedings against a student.

Hehe, That was the one condition for us to have this as a project. That we removed the weapons. (At least when we show it :glad: ) so that part has already been covered.

As for why that ugly statue is our school-logo ? i dont know, we have other "thingies" haning from the roof too. Pointless.... Actually it's not really the logo, but you associate it to the school. And on every broschyr there is a picture of the statue..

haha, nice one muzzle!

Modeling is the best way to do it, but I really don't know how to model, so PERSONALLY I would just do it with brushes, seeing as I am somewhat talented in that area...
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-03 20:13:46 UTC Post #145183
Im really not talented with anyting :P I haven't come across modelling before. Is it done in another program or what? (please don't kill me now) :o

And Muzzle, perhaps you could send it via mail if you're up to it?

Barttylord, making such a thing from solids will make any Hl1 server lag. It will also create tons of leaf saw through portals. If you want to make such a thing from solids func_wall it(easier for vis) and clip the inside.(less clipnodes)

It won't lag that much. Its kinda small.

Turning it into a func_wall won't cause leaf portals saw into leafs errors. So ya, func_wall stuff like that.

this might sound silly, but how do I get the model into my map? where do i put the .mdl file and such? :

Hoorah for Muzzleflash! :) Milkshape?

@BillyMc: Put the model in your Half-LifeValvemodels directory, and then use one of these.
