Okay, I was making some modifications to my map, and I already had it crash on me once for some reason, so I made sure to save and export again every so often, and it crashed again. So I was like eh no biggie I just saved and exported. So I go to open up the .map file, and its COMPLETELY BLACK! Not a single brush at all! Why isn't there anything there?! Is there ANY WAY to get my updated work back?! Please help >_<!!!

There should be a .rmx file. Delete your corrupted .rmf file and rename the .rmx to .rmf and open that in Hammer. You may have lost some work though.

He did, and that didn't work.

I don't have any .rmf OR .rmx files. All I have are .map files and then the little files like .lin or .pts and .p02 or some crap like that... I still have the my .map, but its just not updated with all the changes I made last night. And I don't see any point in trying to do it again because apparently it doesn't even save! >_<

Do the same with the .max and .map files! The .max is the .map's backup file and the .rmx is the .rmf's backup file.

Use RMF files! You can't utilise visgroups otherwise.

I think there is a bug with Hammer and .MAP files where if you have more than something around 5 WADs defined in the .MAP file, then the map doesn't load. I'm not sure though, but try to back up the .MAP file (just in case it screws up even more : ), open the .MAP file with a text editor like Notepad or Wordpad, and delete the stuff in quotes that looks like this (not the "wad" part):

"wad" "<wad1> <wad2> <wad3> <wad4> <etc.> (delete the stuff inside these quotes)"

It might work, but I'm not sure. : Next time, just make frequent backups of your map.

I'll try those out guys, thanks.

Seventh: I'm still kind of new to mapping and I dont know what that means, lol, sorry.

Dandy: I will try that. Thanks. I'll let you guys know if I get the changes back somehow.

I did make frequent backups of my map, and when I load it it goes black, that's why I'm freaking out cause I saved and exported many times and it didnt help when it crashed :(

Dandy, I deleted those wads and stuff, and I tried the renaming stuff, and it still goes all black as if there are no brushes >_<
Anything else guys?

if you do file>save it saves as .rmf
same with ctrl+s
why you useing .map to save?

I did both file>save AND file>export .map. does doing file>export .map overwrite the file>save? I thought it saved them as different things or something so I did both for added security... gg lod -_-

find your .rmf - it has to be there somewhere (if ur desprate search your c (or watever) drive for *.rmf ) and open that - rmf files are like hammer-only files that open in hammer exactly like a map file except faster with less errors and lets use some extra features that an .rmf would remember the settings for and a .map wouldnt. if your familar with photoshop its like an .rmf is a .psd file which retains its levels and a .map file is a .jpg where its flattened out.
hope this helps

Your rmf directory might be different than your map directory. Check your options window.

They go into the same place, dragons. I'm pretty sure the changes I made are gone. Especially with all this stuff I've been trying. I'm just going to have to make them again, but I need to know what is the best way to save my work so that if hammer crashes again, this stuff wont happen! Any ideas?

Read the visgroups tutorial.

Best way to back up stuff is to, uh, copy the files to somewhere else every now and then (hour, two hours, depending on how much you care).

How did you come to that conclusion, orbb? :sarcastic:

8 is the recommended maximum. If you have more then 8 it may cause many types of strange errors.

Just use RMFs and backup often.
