Has anyone found a good way (other than taking digital pics of real people) for coming up with usable "skin" skins for models. All my skin textures end up looking really bad compared to the barney or scientist skin tones. Is there a free, readibly downloadable program out there for making skin-like bmps ?

You can google pictures of people, so you dont have to take them yourself. If you want the tones of a scientist or or barney, get model viewer v1.25 and export their skinnings.. Then you could open the export up in paint, sample the skin tone with that dropper tool, color in the screen, and then save it as a .bmp

You're asking for a lot here - creating textures often isn't a 15-minutes job. Search for some (universal) skinning tutorials, try to get used to some good art programs and try to find out what looks so good about those barney skins. If you want to get good at it, it'll take some time and investigation.
