i know valve went crazy with the pipes and with good reason - there are pipes everywhere in the real world.
okay, so i put lots of pipes in against the wall of a carpark im making:

about the pipes - overkill? or not? (pipes stop suddenly bcus im not finished yet) either way, i like it :D
and yes i realise the whole thing looks slightly boring roof- and floor-wise its an early build

Ugly, unrealistic, don't fit the wall, lame. Remove, kthx.

Heh, the lights seem troubling too. I'd fix that if i were you :quizzical:

I'd say it's overdone and feels 'for the sake of it'. Put some more time into those light fixtures, as they downgrade the area with their low-quality cubic forms more than that good pipe placement could upgrade. :)

You may also want to integrate those pillars with the walls and definitely add some trottoirs or walkways in this area - the floor and ceiling are both awefully flat. Also, focus light on the floor, the ceiling is best left mostly dark (some support beams with shadowed area's between them and stuff).

Oh well, you're still working on this but I thought I'd say it anyway. ;)

They do look a bit over the top. What kind of system would require a pipe setup like that?

A building controlled by AI or a toilet system for fat men? :P

Yah you're pipes are unrealist but it would make funny in a funny map if you would do one... :zonked: and you're lights too are buzed, but I'm here becoz I dont wanna create a whole subject just for only a little question. Is it normal that you're jumping fuking high when you get on a prop phys or i need to do an admin thing? or I need to put ragdoll?

( Just to make funny I will show you the ct spawn of my map im creating, not the one who is broken but anotehr normal who I'm creating. )

2) i dont have a problem with the pipes, but the lights are awful! use model-based lights

:(

1) bobthereaper, stfu and dont be a thread pirate

I'll put that stfu in your ass if you want

( Someone talks french a little just enough to tell me what thread pirate means... I don't find in the dictionnary...)
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-03 17:37:32 UTC Post #166138
It means you should make a new thread instead of trying to steal someone else's.

Ah ok so sry for what I just said after the stfu. But relax I just asked dude don't be fool and say a big word ( I'm talking about GIANT ). :
But I just took the opinuions that everyone said. For real you're pipes penguin are just weird : for that it would be nice in a funny map. And there too many light take off some half.

wow, some people like them, some dont, and some are spamming. remember the pipes wont be a major part, but the first time playing, after all the enemies are dead, i want the player to see them and say 'hey look, pipes'
i dont remember noticing any pipes in hl2 until my 2nd time around.
and yes, im just doing the floor, and the basic outline, i will be using model-based lights if i can find any that fit (carpark is new - in hl2 everything is destroyed - maybe some cstrike models)
and ignoring the temporary brush lights, carparks really do have that many lights. and pipes for that matter - just no so crazy :P
@captain P - walkways? this is a carpark....... they dont really have walkways.........
btwthere is a lift complex surrounded by those posts i made in the last pic

ill keep working on the map - ill do the lights and finish the pipes - i'll reduce the lighting on the pipes so they dont stand out as much

hmm it seems that the the only light that fits is light_florescent01
i was hoping for one with a cage around it....
anyone knows where i can get one? or anyone make one? wouldnt be hard?
or i could just live with it.

Walkways are probably not the right word then, but I meant to clearify trottoirs with it. See, here's an example of what I mean: clickeh. You see a small piece of trottoir between these roads. Such parts work especially well when you put them under some pillars.

The floor also needs some more marks, some metal railings would be good too at corners, exit signs and such... sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers/fire doors... just jotting down some more inspiration. I believe such items do more good than a few additional pipes (while pipes would do a better job in maintenance area's and the like - each area it's own type of details, sortof).
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-03 20:26:09 UTC Post #166173
oh i see.... well its not just a carpark in the middle of nowhere... its for a hotel. so soon there will be emergency staris, etc. signs not going in yet, there will be a maintainance section i.e. for the elevators and maybe a comp. mainframe. overlays going in later. and the next screenshot will show how ive made the pipes less obvious :D

Elevator maintenance rooms are generally at the top of the shaft, for the sake of any fixes done to the cabling used to run the elevator. The motor is in there as well.

All the hotel carparks I've been in have some sort of fenced-off section where tools and such for repairs are stored. Also, some more wall detail would be nice - I've been in an underground carpark where the walls were removed in sections and had fences with piping and valves behind it, and another where each parking spot had it's own door (snow equipment lockers for the person parked there) - So you have some options to play around with.

huh, i might like it better if it wasn't so... messy. It looks out of place with the uniform-looking concrete and all. It might be better if it was the center of a sewer system in a city made out of scrap metal or something like that.

hmmm way to dig up an old topic; map has progressed far since then - i never got round to doing those screens tho :/

MAybe put one large brown pipe running arcoss the top in place of those. Those kind of pipes are usually inside a wall, or ceiling. You could make the ceiling be under construction or destroied, then you could go CRAZY with pipes, and no one could say otherwise, cuz it would make sense. :)
