You all thought the first one was that good? I thought it was nice, not incredible - nothing really new or different from any other HL2 mod. Anyway i'll download it because it still is one of the better mod's out there.

Well, I heard all these really good reviews about the first one, so I downloaded it. But when I got to playing it... Meh, just didn't like it all that much, so I never finished it.

So then today, I heard about part 2 on steam update news, and figured I'd give it a try. Still didn't like it. Maybe it's just HL2 maps that don't appeal to me, but I thought it was really boring. I didn't get 5 minutes into it before I stopped playing.

Not everyone has the same taste. I really loved that map - finally a HL2 map that was polished and well-executed. To me it really stands out in the crowd. :)

But meh, gotta work now, so there's little time to play part 2 now. I'll see this evening.

Im not saying its bad, it's above average, below amazing. There just wasn't anything new or particularly custom about it... it was HL2 on an island.

Exactly how I would have put it, Strider. One of the main reasons HL2 maps don't appeal to me is that few people are pulling away from the included material in the game. And until most people start making new stuff for their mods, I'm not going to become interested in it at all. But that's just me!
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-04 06:05:49 UTC Post #166223
Well I quite enjoyed playing that but again I don't think HL2 mapping is as personal as HL1. You use valve's props to make interesting scenes but it always comes off looking...well...like HL2.

Adam Foster's "Someplace Else" for HL1 was incredible.

There was some really good stuff in there though. The tubes with the zombie stalkers is an interesting idea.

Wait enough time, and we'll see a lot more custom models and textures for HL2 maps.

Remember, HL1 mapping has been around for a long time. HL2 will get there eventually.

Sweet, the next one is out! I will play immediately. Yeah Adam's "Someplace Else" was incredible. Wasn't it only one huge map? It was very impressive. Didn't like all that text though. I'm sure he will continue to make his HL2 maps just as good.

[Update] Ok I played it and i liked it a lot! It was pretty challenging too but I guess thats what i get for playing it on hard. Very nice architecture and sequencing. Far beyond what I could prove with the Source engine. Looking forward to the next one. (Especially with that Fast Zombie at the end - WOOT).

Yeah brilliant map...He earned the praise and jealousy from the players :P

Look forward to the next map oh and he had some good ideas for designs...Someday we will be as good.

Oh I think we all have good ideas but most of us cannot portray them quite as good as Adam can in Half-Life maps.

I just played both the maps for the first time, and wow, he is very talented.

It is obvious he puts a lot of effort into his maps, and it pays off because they look, and for the most part, play excellently.

I finally finished downloading it and im alot more impressed with part 2 than part 1, quite original ideas in there. One thing i hated though is the whole 'headcrabs in the darkness on walkways easy to fall off' section. But the stalker tanks were very nice.

I loved the first. But I think that was more due to the way the story built upon well executed gameplay.

Everything is props ive come to find. Theres not hardly any brush detailing at all. The old days when you felt proud about how everything seen you made, is gone. When my computer gets here tommorow or tuesday, ill be able to get off my dads computer and get into modeling. So, I hope this goes well for me. XSI, maya, or 3dsmax anyone?

I finally got around playing it. :)

Just astoundishing. Amazing. There's many little things to look for that add to the immense feeling of the Combine structures there. Of course, things could've been better, but just show me a single map that does...

For me, this sort of maps are fantastic. I like the cynical text comments, too. Go Adam. :)

// And yeah, props are the way to detail nowadays. Learn to go with it, or bite the dust... ;)

Amazing piece of work. I don't think Valve could've done much better. The eye candies are everywhere.

...but I am stuck. I am at the bottom of this generator complex, and I got all the way to the bottom. I faught off all the combines on that twisting stairs, and killed all the fast and poisonous headcrabs at the bottom. I opened all the doors, but there isn't anything at the bottom.

The whole complex shakes every now and then, and the light flickers.

What do I do now?

Go down to the bottom and there's a switch on one of the consoles. Its sorta at the center, at the bottom (if that makes sense). That'll open a door for you.

Yeah I got confused too and quite often fell off the edge :
I wonder how he creates these maps...Does he ust map the whole layout and work on that or room by room...hmm...
