oi, when i compile my map it freezes when it starts compiling the vis
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-03 03:35:30 UTC Post #18142
just wait longer if u want vis
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-03 03:47:16 UTC Post #18144
It can take a very long time, several hours. If the map isn't designed excellently anyway ;)

but once its done it and you add more to the map will it take just as long when u got to compile
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-03 05:28:30 UTC Post #18156
yeh but vis is to do with the lighting right. so if i just took out all the lights will it compile in a jiff
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-03 05:45:51 UTC Post #18157
oh and also, what does "fast" mean wen ur about to compile?
under vis, it has no,normal and fast?
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-03 06:24:07 UTC Post #18160
vis is either on full mode or on fast, there arent 3 options despite what the compiler options say

if you're using the proper zoners tools, and are compiling OUTSIDE of the crappy hammer attempt at doing a dosbox, put '-chart - estimate' to give you a proper breakdown of what vis is doing/how it did it and a more accurate representation during compile, rather than just a 10%age

Wrong. Go and read the Compiling tutorial.

Vis takes forever. I hate vis. but I need ot. BOO

Use a batch compiler and Zoners tools. Then use the -estimate setting on VIS. It doesn't actually freeze. It sometimes does. But normally, it is just working really hard and making the rest of the programs (including display drivers) freeze. If you use a batch file, you can see it working in %. Estimate explains itself. It estimates the time left!
m0p m0pIllogical.

You dont actually NEED vis and rad... Or was it CSG? Anyways, those just take care of the lighting and... stuff.
You can run the map without compiling Vis and Rad, only it'll be fullbright and notverynice for a final compile, but will drastically cut compile time.

You have to have CSG and BSP. VIS and RAD are technically optional.

I know exactly whats wrong Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, When the window comes up you will notice there are two programs that are running that are the same(don't ask why this happens sometimes-I do not know) Now "End Task" On the one on top-- Usually the first Qrad I think- Its been a while since i ran into the problem.

Or another option is to go and press F9 but instead of doing the expert compile do the normal one and set those options If that still does not work- the Compile the map-but not run, and when it freezes shut the process window down and load your map through the half-life icon--
to do this:

Right click on the half-life icon and add onto the target
"+map [yourmapname]"
Then load half-life through the icon- It will load your map directly without compileing it..

Fix: don't use the crappy old Qtools, use Zoner's instead. Have you learnt nothing?

Oh and maybe hes knew and don't know anything about Zoners, We got to assume hes new at this thing and give him the easiest advice we can ok. And if you have a problem with that, then swallow it, ok. I know your a smart guy at this But there is no need for your last entry in this forum. So anyways thanks for your help and everybody elses.

Zoner's tools mess me up. They compile like nothing I've ver seen but it wont load the completed level. It freezes Half Life instead. So its not really doing anything poductive for me.
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-05 18:51:11 UTC Post #18399
Its really simple;
ZHLT is better than the q-tools.
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-05 19:33:59 UTC Post #18411
ZHLT is better than the q-tools.
Understatement. If you use use the Q-tools you should be beaten with something hard and/or sharp.

I compile by hand, it takes a while

What, print out the RMF, then write the BSP and fill it in, then type it in? Good idea, most control over what's going on.

Guys, please spare me the whip of glass and shrpanel as I say this: I HAVE to use q tools. I know zoner is much better but I installed them and it froze the game when the level started to load. As I've said before, it's not doing anything productive for me.
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-06 18:54:34 UTC Post #18568
your logic makes no sense you crazy thing you
If zoners don't work theres something wrong with your map, yes they compile a little differently but its generally your fault
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-07 01:58:16 UTC Post #18598
As Jobabob said.... Zoners tools only compile the .map file and produce a .bsp.... they have nothing to do with running the game.
I suggest that your game won't run because you have a fatal error that occured during compile. Don't blame zoners for that.
Look at your map!
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-07 02:48:14 UTC Post #18602
Ive tried it wil multiple maps. I dont know whats going on and I dont care. I have the patience to wait out q tools. I watch tv or eat or play other games.
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-07 05:47:18 UTC Post #18615
they aren't just faster, Qtools lack many important features to SPEED UP and AID in compiling
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-08 09:26:45 UTC Post #18741
How do you compile your maps by hand? Jobabob?

Q-tools were meant for Quake (apart from qbsp2, that is for Quake 2). The only reason Hammer doesn't ship with proper compilers is because Valve couldn't be bothered to make an entirely new set. They let other people make their own tools and stuff. So really, you could make Quake maps with Hammer. Just use Zoner's. Q-tools suck!
m0p m0pIllogical.

compiling maps is easy, open up Microsoft Cynicism and transfer from Valve Sarcasm Editor into plain Facetious text
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-09 13:18:53 UTC Post #18841
Thats it? that sounds pretty easy--Can the same be down when compiling textures in worldcraft?

yes, it also allows you to travel back in time and decompile maps with a banana on a stick
