Congratulations to me (woot) and Rowley and Slayer. I had loads of fun participating in the competition, and I think I can say I learned a lot. Thanks.

my idea for the compo, which of course was nearly impossible, was gonna be where a tentacle monster, base and all, erupts through the ground and destroys everything, some grunts, some scientists, etc. Then it gets blown up and guts fly everywhere. I would model the tentacle monster from scratch and and line up an animation, then you would watch the whole thing via cinematic camera.

like i said. too much work, too little time. Maybe in turnstile :o

GRATZ0rz to the winners! Especaiily SlayerA, i watch that thing raise hell like 12 times :D awsome!

Near the windows with the lowered corridor. I think you had that area accessible, with a ladder?

Well done all. It was a very good fun competition. It also let us noob mappers learn that even the deities like Kasperg make silly mistakes in their maps :)

I would really like to know what you thought of mine, so judges comments please

Map, without the plural, as it's the only RMF I've released :D Most mistakes were invisible in the compiled BSP, so I wouldn't really consider them that horrible.

"Poor Kasperg":
This entry had some strong points, like a very good sound ambience which some of the other maps lacked. The occasional retexturing of things like the car was a good destructification technique.
There was a lot of altered brushwork and broken pieces all around (windows, glass etc) which made it look good.
Other things, such as the paper-thin ceilings in some parts (oppossed to some entrants who even made it a false ceiling) made it look strange. The ending was dramatic but came out of nowhere. It didn't even let me explore that part of the map :(
Without being truly original in any particular area, it was one the entries that looked the most similar to what I was expecting as "destructification", which was both good and bad...

Shouldnt you guys have a special mention or something?
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-30 13:13:33 UTC Post #182736
The Hunter
Poor Kasperg
  • Managed to skip everything by accident by scuttling up a pipe, which was very confusing
  • Not all that imaginative
+ Well-made in all aspects

70%

N.B., I did make full use of the percentage scale, not just down to 40% or so like most reviewers.

My special mention goes to penguinboy, who in my opinion destroyed the map in the most horrible possible way.

I loved the athmosphere in "Locked in", as well as the spooky camera sequences. I'm sure it would have been one of the winners had the theme been more oriented to that type of map.

special mention ftw!
i know my map was just too good to come first - it would just be unfair :P
i wanna source compo! i might actually try!
yay!

Judgie comments please!

I personally didn't think the map turned out too great... and was greatly surprised at how much people liked it.

If anything, the most impressive thing imo were the little props, like the speakerphone, and water cooler in the conference room--which probably nobody else even noticed ^_^!

I liked Penguin boy's entry, he detroyed it in every possible way. Very impressive.

I noticed the water cooler. I was all "hey, sweet, that's some impressive attention to detail". Didn't see the speakerphone, though.

Yay somebody saw it ^_^!!!

The speakerphone/conference phone was supposed to be that black triangle thingy on the conference table. Looking back, I guess that one wasn't that great :).

I started so late, I didn't even have time to think about the theme. With all the visible objects at the end, I was having some major performance problems with brushes and entities disappearing. At least a third of the "scorch" decals didn't even render in the final product.

Rowleybob's entry had plenty of detail everywhere, which had both positive and negative effects. When you start the map, for example, you could already see things like the bomb, the crates filled with objects, and of course the damage to the concrete structure, with its metallic reenforcements and some pieces falling apart with func_rotating? entities.
The idea of making water from the pipe flood the area was quite good and daring.
I would have to complain about the retexturing of the light fixtures, but it was probably due to the lights.rad file.
The inaccessible room was a great addition and made the map feel bigger, as well as providing a chance to add more detail which otherwise wouldn't fit in other parts of the map.
The flooded are was ok (not my favourite water texture :P) and things like the green bench cushions floating among the rest of the objects was really nice.
About the retexturing of the map, I didn't consider it a primary objective for this competition, so anyone who left the textures as they were wasn't penalized by my pov.

About the funny things I had thought while checking out the entries: One of my main interests was to see what each of the participants believed was beyond the boundaries of the map. Besides the windowed gallery, the rest was very open to interpretation. For example, most people thought of it as bunker-like structure right beneath the surface, when there could have been more levels above or below it (some of you showed it with the elevator). There were some doors that I never saw open in any of the entries, like the hangar door with the "Waste processing" sign on top. What lies beyond will stay unknown...

Once again, congrats to everyone :)

TY for providing judgie comments!

The ropes and the concrete things were func_pendulums, and they were another thing I was afraid nobody would notice, but somebody saw them...sweet!

I originally built passageways to every door/vent in the map, but didn't end up using most of them. Also the restriction of not making any new accesable areas sort of makes it less inviting imo, but looking back, I suppose this was the wrong attitude.

I had ideas on what to do with some of them, but by the end of the deadline, there was no ambition left...

I wish more people wanted their comments public, as it would be quite interesting to draw from more insight on the other great entrys.

I can't believe it, the "Orb" map had a POLISH song in it! cool

EDIT: I just noticed a polish music CD in the tray. Oops. But the music was still really fitting.

I managed to survive without trouble the first time. Then I replayed it and got hit by a chair. I saw it flying at me and thought "nah, Slayer won't have got it doing anything"...
